I am installing Eclipse for RCP and RAP Developers. My old copy went rogue and decided to act up.
So clean install time! Yay! I downloaded the new version, copied it to the opt folder, extracted it, and ran it.
For some reason, I can't install any plugins due to some crap error*, and it doesn't have a list of default plugins. I deleted my workspace and the original Eclipse install.
Is there another file that is helping Eclipse keep data from previous installs? I am seeing update sites I added when I was constantly trying to get past this issue.
Also, why can't I install new plugins?
I need a clean install so I can't use the Ubuntu installer.
Any tips are appreciated.

I had the same problem when doing a fresh install of Java EE eclipse (helios, galileo, win32 and win64).
The solution for me was to explicitly open the Java perspective, and doing the install after this. This time the installation worked fine.
I suspect the reason is that after a fresh install not all bundles are loaded (although they are present on disk; a feature of eclipse) so that the dependencies cannot be resolved. Opening the Java perspective or creating a dummy Java project will force to load these bundles. Once a bundle is loaded, its existence is persisted, so this only has to happen once.
This issue was mentioned a number of time on the official websites, but always closed or neglected, probably because the reproducer did not do a fresh install.
Download Eclipse 2018-19 (4.9.0) version as an updated eclipse version and install it! Maven dependency will presented inbuild thing in that model, Right click on project -> properties -> on left pane, Maven will display ! Change your setting there to overcome this error and you can add external JAR'S there

I've downloaded the 'spring-tool-suite-3.2.0.RELEASE-e4.2.2-win32.zip' from STS website. After extracting I could see 'sts-3.2.0.RELEASE' folder. I want to use this plugin in my existing Eclipse Kepler. After putting it in Eclispe Kepler's dropins/plugins folder I could not see the STS anywhere in Eclispe. Let me know what to do for this.
There are two ways to get the Spring Tool Suite running on your machine. The first one is to download the full distribution for your platform, extract it, and run it as it is. It comes as a ready to use distribution that already includes Eclipse and a lot of additional plugins installed. That seems to be the bit that you downloaded. Although I would recommend to use the latest version (STS 3.6.1 on Eclipse 4.4) in that case.
The second way is to install the STS components into an existing Eclipse installation. You can do that by using the Eclipse Marketplace menu in your existing Eclipse installation. Browse for the matching STS version in there (the one that matches your Eclipse version) and install it from there.
Please keep in mind that installing the STS components into an existing Eclipse installation doesn't automatically gives you all the third-party plugins that we bundle with the STS distribution, like the latest Maven integration for Eclipse, the m2e-wtp add-on, the AJDT m2e connector, etc. In case you would like to use them, you would have to install them yourself - or use the STS distribution itself.
I would not recommend to manually install plugins into directories yourself. It usually causes trouble.
Here I would like to add some points in Martin answer that after installing STS how can you begin with it in eclipse. For that click on Window -->Perspective --> Open Perspective -->Other
Now you will find option of Spring in the list. Select it.
Finally you can use STS in your eclipse to make a spring project.
I'm trying to install m2e plugin to enable maven integration but it looks like plugin is not installed:
What I do:
Maven is already installed in the system and 'mvn --version' works
Help -> Install New Software -> Indigo->General Purpose Tools - m2e
Eclipse restart of course
There is no mention of Maven in eclipse. Not in Window->Preferences, not when creating new project. Nowhere.
Tried different plugin repositories, tried Eclipse Marketplace - nada.
When running Eclipse I get these errors:

I don't recall what it is called in Indigo. I recently updated to Juno and imported my plugins with no issue. Below is a full list of plugins that I have installed. I'd recommend you uninstall what you have, then search for "Maven Integration". Install that and any other related plugins you will need (i.e. SCM clients).
It is builtin with Indingo, no !?
(Or maybe Indigo WTP)

I have installed cdt-master-6.0.2.zip (link) to my Eclipse by extracting it to the Eclipse installation dir. I'm using Eclipse 3.5 in Windows 7 x86 machine. But the plugin doesn't show up when I start Eclipse (I can't create a new cpp project). Yet cdt shows up in Help > About Eclipse SDK > About Eclipse SDK Features. What am I missing here?
To install plug-ins into Eclipse you should always prefer using the user interface through Help > Install new software menu.
Anyway if you really want to install plug-ins manually into your Eclipse installation, you have to place them into the dropins folder.
BUT this way you will have to resolve plug-in dependencies by yourself. If all dependencies are not satifsied, the concerned plug-ins will fail to start silently. This is why you should REALLY prefer to use the standard plug-in installation method to avoid any problem.
When I select "Help->Check for Updates" in eclipse, I get the following error message at the bottom of the window. From this message "Only one of the following can be installed at once: " it appears I have multiple copies of the same component installed. Under "About Eclipse SDK=>Installation Details" I found at least two instances of Equinox P2 Provisioning: under "Eclipse SDK" and "PHP Development Tools".
Any suggestions on how to get this resolved would be much appreciated.

Update 9/15: I read somewhere that this may be due to a permissions issue and that I should run eclipse as root and perform the update. I was indeed able to complete the 3.6.2 SDK update as root but then afterwards all of my add-on components (e.g. subclipse, PDT, etc.) were gone.
You are getting this message because you are trying to install into a read-only (shared) location. The indication is at this line:
Software currently installed: Shared profile 1.0.0.1288623084982 (SharedProfile_SDKProfile 1.0.0.1288623084982)
The reason why there is a failure is that your install plan would remove an old version of a feature that is part of the shared install. Since a shared install cannot be changed, you get the conflicting dependency.

The fix would not allow you to install in this situation, but it would at least provide a better error message for you.
I got this message or something similar because I had installed Eclipse to my C: drive on Windows 7. Trying to do an update required escalation but Eclipse wasn't prompting me. When I restarted Eclipse using "Run as Administrator", it had the proper permissions to continue and it let me upgrade.

It needs a dependency that only exists in the update site for Helios 3.6.2 and you are running 3.6.1. You can either upgrade to the latest version of Helios (or better yet, Indigo) or add the update sites. I don't know the URL's off the top of my head, but you can try this method:
Download a fresh copy of Helios and install it to a separate folder. Open up help>install new software and click "available software sites". Then export the default sites and import them into your existing Eclipse installation. Your plugins should now update correctly.

Detect shared install changes:
When Eclipse is running in a read-only folder (also known as shared install) and the read-only installation has changed (e.g. new plugins installed, new version of Eclipse installed), Eclipse will now detect this change and warn that your personal additional plugins have been uninstalled.
Provide a Migration Wizard:
Eclipse now includes a migration wizard to help users through the re-ininstallation of their plug-ins.
This wizard is presented in two situations.
First, when a read-only installation of Eclipse is being changed (i.e. Eclipse is being updated or plugins are added / remove),
second when a new read-only installation of Eclipse is run for the first time.

Building on this support, we've also decided to assist users in re-importing their plug-ins from a previous read-only installation.
The reason is simple, many corporations chose to deploy new versions of Eclipse in different folders. This is required to give teams the ability to adopt Eclipse at their own pace, but it also means that when users start using a new Eclipse install, they need to re-install the plug-ins they had installed on their own.
Of course users could use the import/export feature provided by p2, but the time wasted by the user wondering why the plug-ins have vanished and then figuring out what to re-install can be significant, which is why in such situation we are also presenting the migration wizard.
I have Eclipse Galileo (for Java EE Developers) installed, and I'm now trying to get the m2eclipse Maven plugin installed as well.
I follow the basic steps described at http://m2eclipse.sonatype.org/installing-m2eclipse.html, and it seems to be installing just fine. However, after restarting Eclipse after the install it doesn't seem to be anywhere. I should for instance have the ability to create a new maven project, but when the new-project wizard opens, there is no folder for Maven (I also cannot find any reference to it in the context menus of the existing projects I have).
When I click at Help > About Eclipse > Installation Details, I find "Maven Integration for Eclipse (Required)" in the tab "Installed Software", yet another thing pointing towards a successful installation (but I can't find it under the "Plug-ins" tab, should it be there too?)...
I feel like I'm just missing something very obvious, but right now I just don't see it...
I managed to find the answer to this myself:
I had put the Eclipse installation folder under c:\Program Files\, but when I moved it directly under c:\ instead, the plug-in installation worked just as it should. I assume that is because Eclipse wasn't allowed to write to its own installation folder (but I didn't get the usual question from Windows that something was trying to access Program Files either...).
In one way I feel like I should be a bit ashamed that I didn't think of this before. On the other hand though, there could have been some reasonable error message stating that something failed during the plug-in installation...
Well, I hope this at least helps somebody else as well :)
Did you check the m2eclipse installation requirements?
In particular, you need WTP.
"Maven integration for Eclipse" (core feature) and optional "Maven POM Editor" feature depend on the "Eclipse XML Editors and Tools" feature from WST
"Maven integration for WTP" feature provides Maven project configuration for WTP
Did you have a previous version of m2eclipse installed? Did you uninstall it before to install the latest version? Just in case, does the following note applies to you?
Note about 0.9.8 Workspace Incompatibility: If you are using
m2eclipse 0.10.0 with a workspace that
contains projects created under
m2eclipse 0.9.8, you must remove the
workspaceState.ser file. The
workspaceState.ser file is located
within the workspace directory in
$workspacedir/.metadata/.plugins/org.maven.ide.eclipse/workspaceState.ser.
If you remove this file, m2eclipse
0.10.0 will regenerate it as needed.
In my case, uninstalling the previous m2eclipse version didn't work and I had to start with a fresh Eclipse install (maybe try this also).

I was able to solve this problem by going into Program Files, right click on the eclipse.exe file and select "Run as administrator". When I restarted Eclipse it said I had no plugins installs so I reinstalled and my problems were solved.

To solve the problem of 'not getting Maven plugin running in eclipse' , it can be solved by altering admin rights to the .m2 folder . Right click on .m2 folder and go to network sharing. give all rights to all users. Restart eclipse and maven options will start to appear in Eclipse.
