UITableView question(s) - iphone

I am new to UITableView, so please don't mind me asking the following silly question(s).
In the attached screenshot, the IB's geometry does not match the geometry on the simulator - notice the white bar at the bottom of the screen in the simulator. What did I miss? The outlets for the TopLevelView, TableView and the DatePickerView are defined in the rootViewController.h file.
In the IB, I had set the background color of the TopLevelView to lightBlue; the background color of the tableView is set to ClearColor in the rootViewController.m file. But, the lightBlue color of the TopLevelView is not shown around the edges of the TableView.
[ivTableView setBackgroundColor:[UIColor clearColor]];
See the screenshot here

The "white bar at the bottom" problem suggests that you've got a view controller that doesn't seem to know that it's inside a navigation interface. You should show the code or otherwise describe how you're assembling this interface, because there's something wrong in how you're doing it.
The root view controller of your entire interface, the one whose view appears as the sole immediate subview of the window, should be a UINavigationController. Its rootViewController should be the view controller that fetches this view from the nib. Beyond that it's hard to help without knowing more about what you're doing.
I suggest that you start with the Navigation template. Unfortunately its RootViewController is a UITableViewController, which isn't going to work here because that's only for the case where the table view occupies the entire interface. So turn the RootViewController into an ordinary UIViewController. Now in the RootViewController.xib design the interface you've drawn above. It should load properly, convincing you that you're on the right track.

Load a view controller created inside a storyboard as a subview (into a part of the screen) of another view controller

I am currently developing as app for iPad. And I need to create a tabbar. The problem is that, for design purposes, I need the tabbar to be on the top half of the screen and not on the bottom as it is on the default tabbar controller.
Once the tabbar is on top I want that when a button is touched, the subview bellow the tab is changed. Furthermore, the subview that should be loaded was alson designed inside the storyboard. The following sketch shows what I want it to look like:
On my research I found a solution (here) for putting the tabbar on top. Now my problem is on loading a subview bellow it.
I tried it with [self.view addsubview:theNameOfTheViewCreatedINStoryboad.view] but the application simply hangs when I press the button.
I think that is because I am not specifying anywhere what should be the dimension of the new view or where on the scree should it be placed. The reason for that is because I do not know where it should be done.
Can anyone give me some lights on this matter? Is the referred approach the best one for putting a tabbar on top? How can I solve the subview problem?
Glad to see you are using a toolBar and not a tabBar. Even better would be to create a custom content view controller.
You should be looking into using containment:

iPhone make toolbar visible in UITableView

I have a UITableView has a subview of a UIView and I've added a toolbar on top of the UITableView so it should look like this:
However when I actually run it, it looks like this:
So for some reason the UIToolBar isn't showing up. I really don't know why, is anybody able to figure this one out? Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I've changed the simulated metrics like suggested and it still does not show up:
EDIT2: Here is a list of objects as requested by Raixer.
Alright. I have a similar setup in my app so I will show you what I did.
I setup a tab bar controller with navigation controllers in each tab (this gives me the navigation bar automatically that is why I use it). If you notice the View on the first tab is being loaded from another nib (that is what I am assuming you are doing). I did this by changing the view's class to my own view controller and then setting the name of the NIB file to load in the Inspector like this:
(source: minus.com)
Then in my other nib file I only have this:
I hope this helps.
That's because you configured your nib file without counting with the height of the Tab bar.
The toolbar's height is 49 pixels. So when the view appears all your elements are moved 49 pixels up.
You should got to IB, open your View, go to Attributes Inspector, and in simulated metrics select Tab bar for Bottom Bar.
I doubt you will succeed with this approch. UITableViewController is very picky about adding subviews to its UITableView. However, you can have your UITableView handled by a standard UIViewController (just let IB point to a custom class inheritng from UIViewController). Add the table view to the controller's view as a subview and add the toolbar to the outer view.
Then you should be able to add subviews. UITableViewController gives you some convinience and functionality. If you can live without, UIViewController is no disadvantage. If you can't, you'll have to implement it yourself.
Another alternative to get the toolbar: put your table into a UINavigationController. That one comes with a toolbar (on top).

How to programmatically adda breadcrumb view to my UINavigationController App?

I have a UINavigationController App. I want to add a small bar just below the UINavigationBar, around 20px height. y application is almost finished, so I want to rebuild as less code as possible. For example, if I wanted to add a button in the bottom of every view of my application, I can do that by extending UIViewController with a category, and adding a UIButton as a subview of the current controller view, maybe in the viewDidLoad method.
This approach works fine, and so I can add my UILabel to all my views at the top of them. The problem is that it does not TAKE SPACE. It is always on top of my previous views (UITableView...). What is the best way (or just one way) to accomplish such a thing without having to create for example a view with 2 frames, and having all my main views extending it?
I thought of changing UINavigationBar height, but that is definitely not an option.The prompt property of UINabivationBar is just to big (around 30px).
I also tried to create a new view in the viewWillAppear method of every UIViewController, adding to that view my breadcrumb subview, and the original view, but it is not working.
Any ideas on this?
Thank you!
If I were you, I'd make a new UIView subclass to represent this thing, and embed it on the views of the individual UIViewControllers. They can get at the navigation stack by looking at the UINavigationController's .navigationControllers array, walk that and get view titles, etc.

UITableView with fixed image background

Sorry but I found no clear answer on that.
I have an iphone app with a tab bar and a UINavigationController in each tab.
The interface is built with Interface Builder, and in the first tab there is a UITableView.
I have prepared the xib with main view (A) containing a table (T) and an image (IMG) background behind (image as subview of main view).
Later I assigned UITableViewController as owner. This is where problems start.
In IB if I connect view to A I got a runtime error telling me that controller cannot find a table.
If I connect controller view to T everything works fine, except that IMG is not shown.
The only solution I found is to create a new xib holding A and IMG with a UIViewController as owner. Then create a xib holding T only and UITableViewController as owner, correctly connected to T.
Then in viewDidLoad of the UIViewController:
iptc = [[IPPlantsTableViewController alloc] initWithNibName:#"IPPlantsView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
iptc.navigator=self.navigationController; // <-- need this
[self.view addSubview:iptc.view];
And this works, except that the table view seems to not know anything about navigationController, therefore detail view mechanism is not working, unless I set a property for it in UITableViewController.
I also run in to some other problems, for example all the logic for adding/deleting/creating rows to table has to be handled in UIViewController and sent to UITableViewController.
Is there another way for having a fixed image in a table view ?
Mmmm
I will be honest i HATE Interface Builder ;-) so I can't help you about this.
But to set a fixed image in the background of a UITableView you should :
- set background color of the UITableView to [ UIColor clearColor ] (and maybe the background of the cell too)
- set and uiimageview below the uitableview view that contains the image :)
In that way this should work.
But without xcode project I can't help you more ^^
Good luck
UITableViewController is a convenience class; you can equally just use UIViewController and implement the correct callbacks.
In OS 3.2+, you can just set UITableView.backgroundView. If IB doesn't let you do this, you can do it in code instead.
Alternatively, you might be able to wire up the view and tableView outlets differently, unless tableView just does (UITableView*)self.view.

UITabBarController Hide Show Bars with animation like the Photo APP

i'm having a real trouble with UITabBarController. I have a simple foto app, and I'm trying to simulate almost the same behaviour as the PhotoApp from the Iphone
the main view controler is the tabbar itself, i also have a NavBar and a status bar on top.
What i want is on tap to hide the bars (not with timer, just on tap).
The photo is actually an UIScroll view that zooms the photo or makes it again 1:1. that part already works,
I've tried before pushing the view to the navbar to set the hidesBottomBarWhenPushed and well it works, but i can't set a custom animation, and that's not the real problem , I can't show again the bars, they dissapear and i don't know how to reshow them, i'm sure i'm probably missing someting very obvious, but as my experience in obj C is little like half a year part time, i thought i asked here as stackoverflow seems to get the answers :)
Something to investigate: the Three20 project: http://github.com/facebook/three20 - it includes a completely clone of the photo-browsing app in component form.
But without Three20, you can't do this with a stock UINavigationController, because the UIViewController that you're using is a subview of the UINavigationController. You need to make a sibling view on another layer. To do this, make a parent UIViewController which has two subviews: your photo, and a UIToolbar. You can hide and display the UIToolbar by setting it's hidden property, and make sure it's above the photo view with [parent.view bringSubviewToFront:toolbarController] (where parent is the main UIViewController that contains both the photo view and the UIToolbar)
