Optimal number of column families in HBase and Cassandra - nosql

How Cassandra supports more number of optimal column families when compared to HBase? Any underlying implementation differences?

The HBase Book says,
HBase currently does not do well with anything above two or three
column families so keep the number of column families in your schema
low. Currently, flushing and compactions are done on a per Region
basis so if one column family is carrying the bulk of the data
bringing on flushes, the adjacent families will also be flushed though
the amount of data they carry is small.

Postgres Partitioning Query Performance when Partitioned for Delete

We are on Postgresql 12 and looking to partition a group of tables that are all related by Data Source Name. A source can have tens of millions of records and the whole dataset makes up about 900GB of space across the 2000 data sources. We don't have a good way to update these records so we are looking at a full dump and reload any time we need to update data for a source. This is why we are looking at using partitioning so we can load the new data into a new partition, detach (and later drop) the partition that currently houses the data, and then attach the new partition with the latest data. Queries will be performed via a single ID field. My concern is that since we are partitioning by source name and querying by an ID that isn't used in the partition definition that we won't be able to utilize any partition pruning and our queries will suffer for it.
How concerned should we be with query performance for this use case? There will be an index defined on the ID that is being queried, but based on the Postgres documentation it can add a lot of planning time and use a lot of memory to service queries that look at many partitions.
Performance will suffer, but it will depend on the number of partitions how much. The more partitions you have, the slower both planning and execution time will get, so keep the number low.
You can save on query planning time by defining a prepared statement and reusing it.

Overhead of using many partitions in Postgres

In the following link, the creator of a tool I use (Airflow) suggests to create partitions for daily snapshots of dimension tables. I am wondering about the overhead of doing something like this in Postgres.
I am using the Postgres 10 built in partitioning for several tables, but mostly at a monthly or yearly level for facts. I never tried implementing a daily partition for dimensions before and it seems scary. It would simplify things though in several areas for me in case I need to rerun old tasks.

Simple. With dimension snapshots where a new partition is appended at
each ETL schedule. The dimension table becomes a collection of
dimension snapshots where each partition contains the full dimension
as-of a point in time. “But only a small percentage of the data
changes every day, that’s a lot of data duplication!”. That’s right,
though typically dimension tables are negligible in size in proportion
to facts. It’s also an elegant way to solve SCD-type problematic by
its simplicity and reproducibility. Now that storage and compute are
dirt cheap compared to engineering time, snapshoting dimensions make
sense in most cases.
While the traditional type-2 slowly changing dimension approach is
conceptually sound and may be more computationally efficient overall,
it’s cumbersome to manage. The processes around this approach, like
managing surrogate keys on dimensions and performing surrogate key
lookup when loading facts, are error-prone, full of mutations and
hardly reproducible.
I have worked with systems with different levels of partitioning.
Generally any partitioning is OK as long as you have check constrains on partitions which allow query planner to find adequate partitions for query. Or you will have to query specific partition directly for some special cases. Otherwise you will see sequential scans over all partitions even for simple queries.
Daily partitions are completely OK do not worry. And I worked event with data collector based on PG which needed to have partitions for every 5 minutes of data because it collected several TBs per day.
Number of partitions can become a bigger problem only when you have several thousands or dozens of thousands of partitions - with this amount of partitions everything goes to different level of problems.
You will have to set proper max_locks_per_transaction for example to be able to work with them. Because even simple select over parent table places SharedAccessLock over all partitions which is not exactly nice but PG inheritance works this way.
Plus higher planing time for query - in our data warehouse we sometimes see planning times for queries like several minutes and queries taking only seconds - which is a bit craped... But it is hard to do anything with it because current PG planner works this way.
But PROs still overweight CONs so I highly recommend to use any partitioning granularity you need.

Cassandra as replacement to PostgreSQL

Is Cassandra with multiple nodes a good choice as replacement to single node PostgreSql? Data being stored is a time series. It is about tens of gigabytes already and is expected to grow. Database should be integrated into pipeline with apache spark as source and possibly result destination.
What is needed:
1) redundancy: one node failure shouldn't stop the system (all data should be available)
2) speed: more nodes - less time per single insert/select for one client
3) concurrency: more nodes - better speed for simultaneous inserts/selects from different clients
For your points:
1) This is a question which is up to you while choosing the keyspace replication factor RF and the consistency levels CL of your inserts and selects. To be available and consistent you need RF=3 on your and CL.QUORUM for both insert and select for hande loss of one node (for QUORUM you need RF/2+1 nodes online, 3/2+1=2 - integer division, with RF=5 you would neeed 5/2+1=3 nodes online, so you can handle loss of 2).
2) A single request will be handled by a single node as coordinator in your cluster. You do not gain much performance here with singe and synchronous requsts. If you issue any requests and use async you will split your requests across more nodes and gain performance.
3) With more clients you have the same effect - the coordinator will be picked at random (ok there is the TokenAwarePolicy which will pick a appropriate coordinator).
You've mentioned that you use time series data.
1. Naturally, you can vary the replication factor and consistency level. So yes, Cassandra would be good as a replacement.
2. The insert would be really fast as Cassandra writes memory first. So yes, Cassandra would be good as a replacement.
3. Cassandra has linear horizontal scalability. So yes, Cassandra would be good as a replacement.
The drawbacks are that Cassandra is a key-value storage. So you should model the table structure around the queries. And PostgreSQL as RDBMS is more flexible as support the whole set of SQL operations.

Understanding Spark partitioning

I'm trying to understand how Spark partitions data. Suppose I have an execution DAG like that in the picture (orange boxes are the stages). The two groupBy and the join operations are supposed to be very heavy if the RDD's are not partitioned.
Is it wise then to use .partitonBy(new HashPartitioner(properValue)) to P1, P2, P3 and P4 to avoid shuffle? What's the cost of partitioning an existing RDD? When isn't proper to partition an existing RDD? Doesn't Spark partition my data automatically if I don't specify a partitioner?

This is a pretty broad question. It takes up a good portion of our course! But let's try to address as much about partitioning as possible without writing a novel.
As you know, the primary reason to use a tool like Spark is because you have too much data to analyze on one machine without having the fan sound like a jet engine. The data get distributed among all the cores on all the machines in your cluster, so yes, there is a default partitioning--according to the data. Remember that the data are distributed already at rest (in HDFS, HBase, etc.), so Spark just partitions according to the same strategy by default to keep the data on the machines where they already are--with the default number of partitions equal to the number of cores on the cluster. You can override this default number by configuring spark.default.parallelism, and you want this number to be 2-3 per core per machine.
However, typically you want data that belong together (for example, data with the same key, where HashPartitioner would apply) to be in the same partition, regardless of where they are to start, for the sake of your analytics and to minimize shuffle later. Spark also offers a RangePartitioner, or you can roll your own for your needs fairly easily. But you are right that there is an upfront shuffle cost to go from default partitioning to custom partitioning; it's almost always worth it.
It is generally wise to partition at the outset (rather than delay the inevitable with partitionBy) and then repartition if needed later. Later on you may choose to coalesce even, which causes an intermediate shuffle, to reduce the number of partitions and potentially leave some machines and cores idle because the gain in network IO (after that upfront cost) is greater than the loss of CPU power.
(The only situation I can think of where you don't partition at the outset--because you can't--is when your data source is a compressed file.)
Note also that you can preserve partitions during a map transformation with mapPartitions and mapPartitionsWithIndex.
Finally, keep in mind that as you experiment with your analytics while you work your way up to scale, there are diagnostic capabilities you can use:
toDebugString to see the lineage of RDDs
getNumPartitions to, shockingly, get the number of partitions
glom to see clearly how your data are partitioned

By applying partitionBy preemptively you don't avoid the shuffle. You just push it in another place. This can be a good idea if partitioned RDD is reused multiple times, but you gain nothing for a one-off join.
Doesn't Spark partition my data automatically if I don't specify a partitioner?
It will partition (a.k.a. shuffle) your data a part of the join) and subsequent groupBy (unless you keep the same key and use transformation which preserves partitioning).

Apologize that this question must seem trivial, but I cannot seem to find the answer. I have read that Cassandra was partially modeled after GAE's Big Table which shards on a massive scale. But most of the documentation I'm currently finding on Cassandra seems to imply that Cassandra does not partition data horizontally across multiple machines, but rather supports many many duplicate machines. This would imply that Cassandra is a good fit high availability reads, but would eventually break down if the write volume became very very high.
Cassandra does partition across nodes (because if you can't split it you can't scale it). All of the data for a Cassandra cluster is divided up onto "the ring" and each node on the ring is responsible for one or more key ranges. You have control over the Partitioner (e.g. Random, Ordered) and how many nodes on the ring a key/column should be replicated to based on your requirements.

yes, cassandra supports sharding, but in its own way.
In Mongodb each secondary node contains full data of primary node but in Cassandra, each secondary node has responsibility of keeping only some key partitions of data.
