I have oracle sql developer installed and I would like to play with some queries using some dummy connection.
Is there any dummy credentials are there ? so that I can connect to Oracle DB
if you don't want to install Oracle (for some reason) and just want to "play with SQL" try something like http://sqlfiddle.com/
Oracle also provides some VM's and there are even docker images with Ubunto+Oracle you can run.
For the VM: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/community/developer-vm/index.html
For docker should be one of their official containers.

Can someone tell me the difference between pgAdmin and postgreSQL? Are both of them one in the same? I can't draw a ER diagram in pgAdmin but was wondering if it's possible in postgreSQL?
Once I downloaded the postgreSQL it automatically downloaded the pgAdmin and the postgreSQL database is not in sight.
The PostgreSQL is a database engine implementing SQL standards. It usually listen as a server on a network tcp port to provide its abilities.
The pgAdmin is a sort of client. You are able to manipulate schema and data on an instance or multiple instances of PostgreSQL engines.
The MS Windows instalation package consists of both PostgreSQL server and PgAdmin client. So far right after the instalation you are able to manage your databases.
PostgreSQL (pronounced as post-gress-Q-L) is an open source relational
database management system ( DBMS ) developed by a worldwide team of
volunteers. PostgreSQL is not controlled by any corporation or other
private entity and the source code is available free of charge.
The pgAdmin package is a free and open source graphical user interface
administration tool for PostgreSQL, which is supported on many
computer platforms.
phpPgAdmin is a web-based administration tool for PostgreSQL written in PHP and based on the popular phpMyAdmin interface
originally written for MySQL administration
Hope you can understand now it well!!
I've just uploaded my locally developed app to CloudBees. It works fine: I can load the web pages and it can access the database.
However, I cannot connect to its database (also provided by CloudBees) using MySQL Workbench or the command line tool. It always says
Can't connect to MySQL server on 'ec2-50-19-213-178.compute-1.amazonaws.com' (10060)
Any CloudBees configuration that I might be missing?
double check your database connection parameters using SDK : bees db:info -p <databasename>
you should be able to connect to DB using mysql workbench and other mysql tools.
In the MySQL forum exists a collection of links for various types of connections using MySQL Workbench. One is probably especially interesting for you as it deals with Amazon RDS databases. Among others it shows what connection parameters are needed.
Seems that there were some firewall problems in the corporate router that prevented me from connecting before. I tried at home and it worked.
I have downloaded Tabeleau 8.0.1 desktop version. I am able to connect my local postgres database through tableau.
But when I try to connect to the redshift cluster, I am getting an error - invlaid userid /password. I already have passed userid and password correctly. FYI, I am able to connect redshift through sqlworkbench/j, command line prompt (psql) & pgadmin III. And I already have downlaoded the redshift driver as per http://www.tableausoftware.com/support/drivers.
However I am not able to connect redshift cluster through tableau.
Amazon Redshift has a direct connect with Tableau. When you start Tableau, please use the Connect to Data option and then choose Amazon Redshift on the left. You'll see the following log-in screen. You shouldn't need to worry about drivers. Also, the Tableau trial version is the full version, so there is no limiting of features.
You can read more here, and watch a video. Also technical details are here. You may want to try version 8.1, which is the most recent version (also has 64 bit)
I have my Oracle server installed in a remote machine and I want a script at my local machine which will check whether Oracle server is up and running or not. I know this can be check by creating a connection through sqlplus or JDBC. But in this case oracle client won't be present and I am saving JDBC approach as my last option. So is there any other simpler way to check this, which can be easily implemented in a shell script???
Thanks
Not really. The only way to be certain that the database is responding to queries is to run a query on it, such as the venerable:
select dummy from dual
I have pulled the SHARED_DATABASE_URL from heroku config
SHARED_DATABASE_URL => postgres://username:xxxx#host.com/db_name
I am using pgAdmin to try to connect to it but it keeps on timing out. Do I need to specify a port? What am i missing?
You can use this command to connect to psql.
heroku pg:psql
If you are happy to change to postgres 9.1 you can use the newly launched development database, which permits connections via normal postgres tools. Read more at https://postgres.heroku.com/blog/past/2012/4/26/heroku_postgres_development_plan/
You cannot access the shared database using psql, pgadmin, etc.
Heroku offers you the choice of running on a shared or dedicated database package. The shared plan is suitable for development and staging applications. It runs Postgres 8.3. The dedicated plans are suitable for production scale applications. In addition, the dedicated databases offer a number of advantages, including direct access (via psql or any native postgres library), stored procedures, and Postgres 9 support.[source]
