Defining operators in Boo - macros

I'm looking to move some of my lighter weight metaprogramming from Nemerle to Boo and I'm trying to figure out how to define custom operators. For example, I can do the following in Nemerle:
macro #<-(func, v) {
<[ $func($v) ]>
}
Then these two are equivalent:
foo <- 5;
foo(5);
I can't find a way of doing this in Boo -- any ideas?

While Boo supports operator overloading by defining the appropriate static operator function (op_addition), and also supports syntactic macros, it does not support creating custom operators at this time.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you need but you can create syntactic macros in Boo. There's some information on the CodeHaus site, http://boo.codehaus.org/Syntactic+Macros, but the syntax has changed in one of the recent releases. I don't know of any tutorials on the new syntax but the source release for Boo 0.8.2 has some examples (some of the language structures are implemented as macros). The assert macro would be a good place to start.

"Lifting" exceptions to Option types

Both F# and Scala act as a hybrid language that is often used to bridge the words of tradional object oriented code to functional code.
A concept that belongs more to the OO world are exceptions, whereas the functional world favors Option types in many cases.
To wrap existing library code that relies on exceptions - and make it more functional - I would thus like to "lift" exception-throwing code to instead return an option type.
In Scala, there is a nice library function to "catch all" and convert to option. It can be used like this:

Now that I'm moving to F# I have the same requirement, but I can't seem to find an existing utility function for this - and also struggle to implement one myself.
I can create such a wrapper for a unit function, aka an action
let catchAll f = try Some (f()) with | _ -> None
But the problem here is that I don't want to first wrap all the exeption throwing code into an action.
For example I would like to wrap the array-indexing operator, so that it doesn't throw.

maybeGetIndex [| 1; 2; 3 |] 10 // -> None
However, it would be much nicer if one could simple write

(Scala can achieve this through call-by-name parameters which seem to be missing from F#)
So this question is twofold:
Is there an existing library function to wrap exceptions into option
types?
Is there a language feature that would allow me to implement
it?
First of all, I think that it's not true that a "concept that belongs more to the object-oriented world are exceptions". Exceptions exist in many functional languages of the ML family and, for example, OCaml relies on them quite heavily and uses them even for certain control flow structures. In F#, this is not so much the case, because .NET exceptions are somewhat slower, but I see exceptions very much orthogonal to the object-oriented/functional issue.
For this reason, I actually find exceptions often preferable to option types in F#. The downside is that there is less type-checking (you do not know what might throw), but the upside is that the language provides a nice integrated langauge support for exceptions. If you need to handle exceptional situations then exceptions are a good way of doing that!
To answer your original question about syntactic tricks you can make - I would probably just use a function as your existing code does, because that's explicit and easy to understand (and presumably, you'll only need exception wrapping in some core functions that you implement).
That said, you can define a computation expression builder that wraps the code in the body and serves as your catchAll function with a somewhat neater syntax:

This lets you write something like:
catchAll { return Array.empty.[0] }
As mentioned earlier, I wouldn't do this because (i) I don't think all exceptions need to be converted to options in F# and (ii) it introduces unfamiliar syntax that new team members (and future you) might be confused by, but it is probably the nicest syntax you can get.
[EDIT: Now a working version with return - this is somewhat less pretty, but perhaps still useful!]

:= is not a built-in operator -- anyone can overload it and define it to mean whatever they like. The reason people like to use := is because it looks very assignmenty and is used as an assignment operator in other languages.
So, if you're trying to find out what := means in the particular library you're using... my advice is look through the Scaladocs (if they exist) for a method named :=.

That IS regular Scala code. One strength of Scala lies in its extensibility. The syntax allows the programmer to extend the syntax of programs to create domain-specific languages. This is especially helpful when using underlying libraries.
The domain-specific language of Scala doesn't translate so much as allow you to defer application of code until the appropriate time. The tick character (') means that the following set of characters is a symbol, built-in datatype. The -> operator is syntactic sugar that can be expressed in the same way that a comma is, but visually, it imparts the concept of "translation" or "from this to that".
The domain-specific language you are looking at doesn't create structures, although it looks like it does create a functor. In this case it is a seen by the Java Virtual Machine as a Function1[Type,Type] instance which has an apply method that takes its argument and returns a result which is calculated by the provided code.

Redundancy in OCaml type declaration (ml/mli)

I'm trying to understand a specific thing about ocaml modules and their compilation:
am I forced to redeclare types already declared in a .mli inside the specific .ml implementations?
Just to give an example:

type foobar = Bool of bool | Float of float | Int of int
(* foo.ml *)
type baz = foobar option
This, according to my normal way of thinking about interfaces/implementations, should be ok but it says
Error: Unbound type constructor foobar
while trying to compile with
ocamlc -c foo.mli
ocamlc -c foo.ml
Of course the error disappears if I declare foobar inside foo.ml too but it seems a complex way since I have to keep things synched on every change.
Is there a way to avoid this redundancy or I'm forced to redeclare types every time?

OCaml tries to force you to separate the interface (.mli) from the implementation (.ml. Most of the time, this is a good thing; for values, you publish the type in the interface, and keep the code in the implementation. You could say that OCaml is enforcing a certain amount of abstraction (interfaces must be published; no code in interfaces).
For types, very often, the implementation is the same as the interface: both state that the type has a particular representation (and perhaps that the type declaration is generative). Here, there can be no abstraction, because the implementer doesn't have any information about the type that he doesn't want to publish. (The exception is basically when you declare an abstract type.)
One way to look at it is that the interface already contains enough information to write the implementation. Given the interface type foobar = Bool of bool | Float of float | Int of int, there is only one possible implementation. So don't write an implementation!
A common idiom is to have a module that is dedicated to type declarations, and make it have only a .mli. Since types don't depend on values, this module typically comes in very early in the dependency chain. Most compilation tools cope well with this; for example ocamldep will do the right thing. (This is one advantage over having only a .ml.)
The limitation of this approach is when you also need a few module definitions here and there. (A typical example is defining a type foo, then an OrderedFoo : Map.OrderedType module with type t = foo, then a further type declaration involving'a Map.Make(OrderedFoo).t.) These can't be put in interface files. Sometimes it's acceptable to break down your definitions into several chunks, first a bunch of types (types1.mli), then a module (mod1.mli and mod1.ml), then more types (types2.mli). Other times (for example if the definitions are recursive) you have to live with either a .ml without a .mli or duplication.
Yes, you are forced to redeclare types. The only ways around it that I know of are
Don't use a .mli file; just expose everything with no interface. Terrible idea.
Use a literate-programming tool or other preprocessor to avoid duplicating the interface declarations in the One True Source. For large projects, we do this in my group.
For small projects, we just duplicate type declarations. And grumble about it.
You can let ocamlc generate the mli file for you from the ml file:
ocamlc -i some.ml > some.mli
In general, yes, you are required to duplicate the types.
You can work around this, however, with Camlp4 and the pa_macro syntax extension (findlib package: camlp4.macro). It defines, among other things, and INCLUDE construct. You can use it to factor the common type definitions out into a separate file and include that file in both the .ml and .mli files. I haven't seen this done in a deployed OCaml project, however, so I don't know that it would qualify as recommended practice, but it is possible.
The literate programming solution, however, is cleaner IMO.
No, in the mli file, just say "type foobar". This will work.
