Can I access remote files on a different OS from Eclipse? - eclipse

I remember i could remotely open files that are on my server via Notepad++. Can I do that with Eclipse so that I can edit files on my computer and when I save it saves on that file directly on the server.
I am using Windows 7 and my server is CentOS (I think).

The Remote Systems Explorer lets you do this. Open "Help > Install new software...", select the "Galileo Update Site", find the Remote Systems Explorer and install it.
Once you've got it installed, open the "Remote Systems" view and add a connection to your favourite server. I use it all the time; works like a charm.

Eclipse normally needs files to be in a project, but if you are able to map the network drive, you can add the remote folder into a project as a linked resource, then it can be modified as if it is on the local machine (except for additional latency).
To maintain portability, you can specify a path variable for the remote file system and define a relative path from that variable. See this answer for details of setting up linked resources.
If mapping the drive is not an option, there is the Remote System Explorer architecture. I've not used it myself so I can't say how well it works, but this blog describes how to use RSE to browse remote files.

How can you sync/share files from one computer to another in VS Code?

I am using 2 computers to code in VS Code, but I want to sync a specific file when I edit it in both computers. Do you have any extensions, or servers that allows it to sync?
I tried looking in Google, some said try FTP, and some said use "Settings Sync". (I installed Settings Sync, but I don't really know if it can sync my files.)
Option 1
Use vscode remote development.
Select main machine which would host all the files and use SSH to access the files from the other machine.
Option 2
Rsync is a standard linux tool which can be used.
Use can use vscode rsync extension for syncing the files from one machine into the other.
I think that the closest experience to what you have in mind that you can get currently on VSCode is Visual Studio Live Share. This is an official extensions suite that lets you share your screen with multiple hosts, it also shares most of your current VSCode editor features (like intellisense) and can be enabled with voice and text chats. I would also suggest to set up a git repository for the files you are going to work with, so that hard copies of all your files will be avaialble to all your users.

Eclipse files does not exist in workspace but does in remote system

I have a remote project in eclipse. Usually it works fine but sometimes, my explorer, says a file does not exist when I open it. The files does exist in my remote system explorer and in my local explorer file list, it just cant open.
Even if I refresh the project. Any suggestions.
Possible suggestions
You might be having your workspace in virtual machine, which keeps refreshing at regular intervals. Recommending to save your workspace in myDrive or myDesktop (yours) where it would be safe.
You eclipse might have synced up with version control( like svn/cvs) at remote. Always disconnect from your version control while you have with development work for the day. And i recommend you to make a local copy of remote repository in your desktop.

Recovering netbeans local history

I had a Virtual Machine inside which I had my PHP project. The project was developed using Netbeans, and I used its local history extensively.
My VM Ubuntu installation got corrupted, so I ended up creating a new VM. I was able to copy over most of the files from the VDI (I attached it to the new VM), but I can't figure out where netbeans' local history is saved. I copied over the Netbeans project folder, but the history doesn't seem to be saved here.
Does anybody know how I can recover the Netbeans history?
Local History is kept in the .netbeans settings folder. On my Windows 7 machine that is located at <HOME>/.netbeans/<NB_VERSION>/var/filehistory where HOME is my user home and NB_VERSION is the version of NetBeans (e.g. 7.0).
Unfortunately this is an all or nothing thing. There is no way, that I can tell, to find specific projects. So, if you have local history for projects on your host machine you run the risk of overwriting these.
If you're looking for it on a Mac, the file local history is located at /Library/Application Support/Netbeans//var/filehistory.

Move / backup Netbeans FTP profiles

Trying to figure out how to transfer / back remote connections in netbeans. I have over 100 that I would like to move to a backup computer. Recreating every one of them would be extremely time intensive. I cannot find any way to export the remote profiles and I haven't been able to find the profiles in the .netbeans directory on the local computer.
Is there a file, or any method that would allow moving or backing up the FTP profiles.
The location changed in Netbeans 7.2. The path is the same except AppData\Roaming instead of AppData\Local.
If you are setting up a new windows machine to run Netbeans, you need to first create a dummy remote ftp connection so Netbeans will create the last folder in this file path. Place the .properties files here and then restart Netbeans.
C:\Users\[windowsUsername]\AppData\Roaming\NetBeans\7.2.1\config\Preferences\org\netbeans\modules\php\project\RemoteConnections
The path on Windows would be:
user\.netbeans\6.7\config\Preferences\org\netbeans\modules\php\project\RemoteConnections
For Windows 10:
C:\Users\ (username) \AppData\Roaming\NetBeans\ (netbeans_version) \config\Preferences\org\netbeans\modules\php\project\RemoteConnections

Zend Studio and remote host - best practice

Got the following:
Zend Studio
Zend Framework Project
Remote host with FTP and SSH (root access)
Want to:
Save directly to remote host.
Currently i'm working on a localhost *AMP server, manually updating the remote through FTP.
Have tried various ways to acomplish the above - unsuccessfull obviously.
Can some one tell me what to do? Studio 5 (pre-eclipse) was so much better for pure 'FTP programming'.
/Philip
Currently i'm using remote server support for synchronize my project directly with my i5 server.
It works using ftp or sfpt if you have enabled SSH on your server machine.
It works very well.
Before using remote server support you have to set up a connection
to the server: go to window menu > open perspective > other >
remote system explorer
set up a connection to your server
Return to php develop perspective
To add the "support to remote server" to an existing project, click on the project with rigth click > properties > Remote Server Support
Flag enable Remote connection properties
Set-up all properties and select upload files "on save"
In this way, ZS work locally on the file's project (index, build files ecc) and upload on the server only the .php and .js files.
It can works very well with svn suppor too, because it DOESEN'T upload (.svn) files to the server but keeps it local.
Whatever you do, don't use Expandrive. That's what I'm working with now, and it grinds ZSE to a crashing halt. Sometimes, Expandrive just stops working and ZSE thinks the file disappeared, so you have to close everything and anything not saved is lost.
EDIT: One solution that's worked for us is using the SMB protocol, using Windows' SMB compatibility to create a remote drive, and then interacting with your code base that way. Make sure to ignore building large static files or large files you won't be directly editing to further speed up Eclipse when building a project this way.
You can use 3rd party utilities:
Expandrive for OSX
Netdrive (commercial) or FTPDrive (free)
to mount FTP/SFTP to drive or folder so you can work as it is locally.
