I'm trying to figure out a solution to manage our transaction emails (such as the welcome email, you've got a bid, etc...)
We would like to be able to allow marketing to manage the content of the emails, and create split tests to test content / subject lines / etc...
Ideally we could invent our own success metrics to report back to the email management system (such as user completed registration, accepted bid, etc...).
Right now we have our emails in templates using stringtemplate. The code replaces tokens with the correct content for that email.
Strongmail is a potential solution, but it is pricey - anybody have experience with alternatives?
I'm looking for the same kind of service, and https://www.sendwithus.com/ seems to do the job.
Have you taken a look at PostageApp?
Currently, it's a layer between your web app and your SMTP server which has additional features for your transactional emails.
With PostageApp, you are able to create two different templates and have them triggered alternately with different content and subject lines. However, the metrics that you would want to use for A/B testing aren't built into the system yet, so I'm not sure if it would be a good fit for you.

My users register on my website (200 per day) and can select from a large pool of categories (100) of content they are interested in: Tech, Business, Health... and so on.
I want to send them an email every week with a digest of the categories they selected.

I'm not sure you can do that with Mailchimp and is really expensive considering my user count growth. Plus, users would register on my database and then would have to re register and confirm it on Mailchimp.
I was thinking of making my own / buying something custom that uses Amazon SES.. Looks cheaper. Is that a good idea? What would the obstacles be? Is it very hard to manage bounces, getting your domain through spam blockers and stuff?
Mailchimp is a great way to go here. You can use their API so that your users do not need to re-register. Their content creation tools are great as well so you can build everything you need with them. https://apidocs.mailchimp.com/gettingstarted/connectivity.php
Building out your own tools really depends on what all your platform does today.. that make vs buy decision is a complex one.
I'm def not looking for someone to do this project for me, just bouncing off some ideas with a guru or two.
I have emails going into a global box that is shared by a few employees. I need to find a better way to assign the work out. In the past, it was grab and go. Today, an employee assigns the work out.
I'm trying to find a simple way using maybe Excel or Access, that I could copy/drag the email and it would provide who should work it and how much work they have done by week/month/year.
It's not possible to use an inhouse ticketing system, because it is non employees that send mail to this inbox, so they would not have access to using the in house ticketing system.
Would it be easily possible to design something like this or is this a more daunting task? What software would you recommend or method would you use?

I recommend converting emails to Tickets, using a CRM/ticketing system with such feature. It would save you the hassle of developing and mantaining custom code, for a commom feature needed not only by you, but many other firms:

I'm currently designing my very first Website for a small business Intranet (5 pages). Can anyone recommend the best way to manage content for the Company News section? I don't really want to get involved in day to day content updates so something that would be simple for the Marketing guy to create and upload a simple news article, perhaps created in MS Word, lets assume the author has no html skills.
I've read about Content Management systems but,
A. I won't get any funding for purchase and
B. Think it's a bit overkill for a small 5 page internal website.
It's been an unexpected hurdle in my plans, for something that I'd assumed would be a fairly common functionality I can't seem to find any definitive articles to suit my needs.
I'm open to suggestions (even if it's confirmation that a CMS is the only way to go).
Your requirements are : small site, no budget and the need for it to be easy for the marketing guy to upload a news item.
My recommendation would be to go with an all in one CMS e.g wordpress which has the kind of functionality you're talking about out of the box.
My guess is this organisation is just getting into "intranets" so something quick and simple that can be used to justify expenditure if value is returned is the key. Perhaps look at a plugin that automatically emails a summary of the blog posts to all employees once a week would be useful ?

Additional in what Mr. Mckinnon said, you must keep in mind that if you don't want to get involved in daily updates of the people who is going to use the platform, you should consider the following:
What kind of data you want to be displayed
Who can view/modify that data
Who can create/remove data
How you will be organizing all that data
Your intranet should not be limited to display or create data, eventually all that data can turn into a beautiful Knowledge Base (KB) for your company that eventually your coworkers can share their solutions to common and rare problems that company can present eventually. This KB is amazing and time-saving, it is recommended to start it as soon as possible, so newcomers to your Company have access to it and see the most common issues and they can enter into production asap (we all know time is a luxury in every company regarding size).
Just keep in mind too, that all that knowledge and data is beyond valuable to you and your coworkers, so you should also consider some additional login credentials so your Company System Administrator can manage those credentials and also eventual audit for unauthorized access (if applicable).

I have a website where people do simple cognitive psychology experiments. Currently, people volunteer. To increase numbers of responses, I would like to offer micropayments in a manner similar to Mechanical Turk*.
My question is, What would would be the best system to use to make these payments? I would guess that both paypal and flattr would be options. Has anyone with experience with setting up a micropayment system like this be able to offer advice?

*I am not thinking about using mechanical turk itself, just because I do not think I would be able to control the web based studies exactly I would need.
Flattr would work in your scenario:
Each person doing the test would need a Flattr account.
They’d need to login with their Flattr account on your site (like on fundd.de) or connect your site with their Flattr (easy with OAuth).
Once they’ve taken the test you manually Flattr them and by controlling your monthly budget you control how much each click is worth.

Downsides:
Required to sign up with an additional service.
Flattr currently caps monthly spending at €100 so if you have lots and lots of testers you’d run into problems of making the payment high enough. We are reconsidering this, at least for users in good standing.
Monetary incentives for testers bring in a different crowd and can influence the results of their tests but you probably already know that.

I'm new to programming, and my only area of expertise is web design/simple development on platforms like wordpress/expression engine. (Yea, you guys can laugh).
I have a new client who currently receives medical faxes through an online form (the user fills out a form concerning their prescriptions and once submitted, it faxes the info).
I'm completely redesigning their site, and I'm not sure how online faxing works.
Has anybody dealt with internet faxing? How does it work? Does/can it go through email?
And is it possible to send a fax through a form with javascript/php or route it through email?
Don't pay for it! All you need is a modem on the server and a standard phone line. Then set up a fax print driver under your os (you can do it on windows and unix).

There are other ways but unless you can't get a phone line you'd be mad to pay fees for it.
Would it not be helpful to look at how it is currently being done, that way you can learn a thing or two about the process before trying to go do it again? That way you can find if it is using any special libraries or techniques or services to send the fax and you can then either duplicate the code or use it as a template to get started on your own solution.
All of what your asking is possible. I would recommend finding a service provider who can send the fax for you. They all have different interfaces requirements and pricing. I used to use DataOnCall which is now called Fax.com
They had a web service which we would post the document to be faxed plus additional information. They were a preety reasonable service. This was several years ago so I can't speak how they currently fair.
Take a look at eFax's SDK. I haven't used it, but it looks like it might be useful to you.
Yes, you can send faxes via email through several services; this link seems to have some useful information. I worked at a company previously that did this same sort of thing, and while I don't recall the exact service we used, most of them are very similar, and they work reasonably well.
