Sending anonymous email from MFMailComposeViewController - iphone

This may be a stupid question, but is there any possible way (from a developer's perspective) to send an email from the MFMailComposeViewController and also change the From: address from the default email account set up on the phone? I want to upload some data from my application, but I don't want it to be linked to the user's email address.

Even if you change the From: it does not accomplish any kind of anonymity. Any well-behaved mail server adds that info to your mail headers.

How to set from mail address other than smtp authentication mail in java mail

I am specifying "FROM" address usinf setFrom() method, But i still receive mails having "FROM" address of SMTP authentication mail id. and want to set the "FROM" address dynamically. which keeps changing. What is the RFC282 standard to achieve this.
The solution from google is this
Gmail lets you send messages with another of your email addresses listed as the sender instead of your Gmail address. This feature helps you manage multiple accounts from the Gmail interface; it works only if you already own the email account linked to the alternate address
Select the Accounts and Import tab (or Accounts tab, if you're using Google Apps).
Under Send mail as, click Add another email address.
In the 'Email address' field, enter your name and alternate email address.
Choose one of two options:
Use Gmail's servers to send your mail (this is easier to set up)
Use your other email provider's SMTP servers (we recommend this option for professional mail accounts or domains). Note for Google Apps users: Depending on your domain2 type, this feature may be disabled by default. Talk to your administrator if you have any questions.
If you choose to use Gmail's servers:
Click Next Step >> and then click Send Verification. Gmail will send a verification message to your other email address to confirm that you own it.
Open your other account and either click the link in the message Gmail sent or enter the confirmation code in the Accounts section of your Gmail settings.

The overhead involved is that any new from address needs a alias to be set in Gamil authentication mail account. Its not suits for enterprise salable app.
Other solution is You can install a mail server (hmailServer). This server allows you to set the custom from address
If any body knows other solutions, please suggest me.
It's up to your mail server. Often mail servers will prevent you from using any From address other than your actual login name. This helps prevent spam. Depending on your mail server, there may be ways to convince it that you should be allowed to use other From addresses.
These are two different things that you are talking about:
The id that you are mentioning is part of smtp handshaking protocol which usually is mapped to "Return-path" field in mime-header.
Whereas the id that comes in "FROM" field which actually is displayed in mail-list is been appended by the mail server when u compose the mail.
So if you can modify the mime header then make sure that "FROM:" field contains the id that yuou want to set not the smtp authentication id.
btw its rfc822
Have worked for rediffmail technical team in order to develop and enhance smtp, pop and imap protocols
Its depends on your mail server and configuration setting

spoof from address through gmail

I am trying to send a spoofed email using gmail. before people freak out, no I am not spamming anybody (if you have to know why, an explanation is below). Using this question and answer, I was able to send a test email to myself with a spoofed to address (it appeared as I wanted), however, regardless of what I enter in the MAIL FROM field or the From: field in the DATA, it always appears from the address I used to authenticate.
My question is whether it's possible to spoof the from address as well. The goal would be for the from address to appear as something other than an email address. (again, explanation is below)
EXPLANATION
For those who want to know why I am doing this, my brother recently got promoted, and he and I are both fans of the show How I Met Your Mother. As such, I would like to send him a The Bro Code approved congratulatory email, which is required to be of the form:
To: Bro
From: Bro
Subject: Bro!
Nice, Bro!
Therefore, I need the From address to appear to be simply "Bro"
I believe the short answer is no.
Email headers are just text, so if you are using sendmail or something, you can use whatever you want. However, it might (see: will likely) end up in his spam folder.
Gmail needs to protect it's reputation, so they will always add a breadcrumb to say who actually sent the email. For instance, you can setup gmail to send email "from" non-gmail addresses, but the message will be sent from your gmail address "on behalf" of your non-gmail address.

detect if given Email ID is configured in Mail?

I am creating a mail app. I am using MFMailComposeViewController. I am able to check whether the mail client is configured with any of email or not. But can I check that the mail client is configured by a particular email account.
I want to force user to first setup his mail account and then try to send mail. For that I need to check if user is trying to send mail from abc#gmail.com then it should be configured so is it possible to check that if iphone's Mail app is configured by given email.
If possible then how and if not then any alternatives..
Thanks a lot.
The API doesn't expose that information publicly (for probably good reasons, such as preventing developers from harvesting iPhone users' email addresses).

By looking at the class reference for MFMailComposeViewController in the documentation, I'd say you can't do anything about it. It's not very flexible unfortunately, same as sending SMS, and there you can't MMS with it, just SMS.
You can't specify a default email address. If you could, I suspect one could view this as a security risk for spam/unsolicited mail.
You can't using Apple's API, it will use the Mail app and whatever account is setup in there. You'll have to grab full sendmail client code and incorporate it into your app.

Send mail without MFMailComposeViewController

I want to send mail from an iPhone app without showing an MFMailComposeViewController. I also want this mail to be sent from the user's default Mail account. Is it possible to do this?
This is not supported by the iPhone SDK, probably because Apple doesn't want you to do it.
Why not? My guess: Because it's easy to abuse. If we knew user's email address, we could spam them, we could fake emails from them, etc. Imagine finding out an iPhone app sent an email as you without your knowledge -- not cool, even if the app had good intentions.
So, anything you do to get around that, is likely to get you rejected from the app store.
Having said all that, you could basically write your own smtp interaction code to chat with the user's outgoing mail server. For example, if the user has a gmail account, you could ask them for their email and password, you'd have to know how to talk to the gmail servers, and send email through them.
Going that route means asking the user for their username, password, and either asking for or figuring out their mail server information. Another choice is to send directly from the phone (your own smpt server, not just a client), which is a bit more coding. And if you write your own server, the mail you send is more likely to be blocked since your originating IP might not match the domain on the sender's email.
There also exist some libraries that might help out. Previous related question:
Open Source Cocoa/Cocoa-Touch POP3/SMTP library?
There are legitimate reasons for wanting to send an email. (Such as communicating with a server using SMTP instead of HTTP)

It is possible to use MFMailComposeViewController without user interaction. See my answer on the iPhone send email not using MessageUI question.
