I would like to upgrade my 3D application with some high res assets, for iPhone 4.
I can't update the whole graphic content of my app. I want to mix images in high and low resolution.
All my application is rendered with OpenGL
The most part of my app is based on billboard sprites, so I can change the scale factor of my OpenGL view but I will have to scale all my low res sprites and update their positions.
Do you have another way to do this by changing as little code as possible?
In my project I set all sizes and positions for 320x480 screen. And when running on retina device and using x2 texture I multiply its dimensions x0.5 after loading it (for example texture has 100 pixels width, but width value will be 50).

I have a Unity 2D project with a fixed screen size of 800x450 pixels.
I have imported a background image that is also 800x450 pixels.
When placed on the stage, the image only takes up half of the screen.
The scale of the image is set to 1,1. The Z position is 0.
Why is the image displayed too small? How can I display the image at the correct resolution?
Does this mean that I have to design all my game assets at 2x the required size? Or that I somehow have to set the scale for all imported assets at 2? What is the recommended workflow?

I would trying making your camera orthographic, and set the size of the camera (not the transform) to be half the height that you would like it to be (225)

at the moment I start with Unity in 2D development for android. Before I develop in Unity i develop with LibGDX where I can the Viewport to a static screen resolution at 1080 * 1920, if the game starts on a smaller device for example 480 * 800 the game still looks pretty good. In Unity when I use a Orthographics Camera and set the width to 1080 and the height to 1920 it looks like a equal long quadrate and not portrait.
How can I use a static Camera which the Viewport is 1080 * 1920 and for other devices unity self charge the resolution for the game?

You can't. You're thinking about 2D engines. Unity is a 3D engine with a 2D extension (sort of). You set your camera up (doesn't matter what orthographic size you use), and it gets scaled to the viewport of the device it's running on. the size you set is the size of the viewport, in world units, along the y axis of the device's display. The width is set automatically based on the device's aspect ratio. You can see this by resizing the game window in unity. Doing that causes the visualization of the camera's bounds to change. To create a static camera, you'd have to manually add black borders around the edges (or at least I think you do), OR, better yet, create your game in a manner that runs on all aspects. You should consider aspect ratios between 4:3 and 16:9 for landscape and 3:4 to 9:16 for portrait games. This is specially important since many recent devices use on-screen system buttons (such as the google nexus and Xperia Z series) which means you get an aspect ratio of a little bit less that 16:9 (or a bit more, on tablets). This doesn't sound like much, but if you down-scale a 16:9 image to fit on those devices' screens, it looks ugly as hell.
So i am using tiled to create levels for my new iphone game.
The when creating a map with tiled for iphone the correct map size is 50x50 and tile size 32x32.
The problem is with these dimensions the tiles are to small for what i need it for.
So i have tried doubling the settings to map size 100x100 and tile size 64x64 but no luck..
Anyone familiar with doing this?
The goal is i would like the tiles to be bigger and take up more of the screen space. If you dont get the settings right, the map wont show up correctly on the screen half of it will be hanging of.
There's two things to consider: the size of your tiles must match the tile size setting in Tiled, otherwise they will not align correctly. If you double tile size to 64x64 you also have to double the size of the tileset image.
The other thing is how many tiles fit on the screen. If you divide 480 by 64 you get 7.5 meaning 7 and a half tiles fit on the screen on the horizontal direction (assuming landscape mode). If that's what you need, you'll have to make sure the tile size is clearly divisible by 480x320 respectively 1024x768 on iPad or 568x320 on widescreen devices.
I have decided to have 2 set of images for my iPod game. One with 320x480 and the other for the retina one. I can switch happily between them but this forces me to add extra code to handle the change in resolution.
My game is played in screen space on a grid, so, if I have 32 pixel tiles, I will have to use 32 offsets in low res and 64 in retina (because of doubling resolution). For a simple game this can be no problem, but what about other more complex games? How do you handle this without hardcoding things depending on the target resolution.
Of course an easy way to bypass this is just releasing a 320x480 version an let the hardware upscale, but this is not what I want because of blurry images. I'm a bit lost here.
If you have to, you can do the conversion from points to pixels (and vice versa), easily by either multiplying or dividing the pixel/point position with the contentScaleFactor of your view. However, normally this is done automatically by you if you just keep it to using points instead of pixels.
This is automatic. You only need to add image files suffixed '#2x' for the retina resolution.
Regarding pixels, from your program you work in points which are translated to pixels by the system. Screen dimensions are 320x480 points for iphone retina and non-retina.
Is it possible to use an image captured with the iPhone's camera as a texture that is then manipulated in OpenGL ES (flag wave effect, etc.)? The main problem being the size of the iPhone screen being 320x480 (no status bar) and thus the image won't have dimensions that are power-of-2. Is the main option copying it into a 512x512 texture and adjusting the vertices?
Yes, that's the way to do it.
Just use a larger texture. It's a waste of memory but unfortunately there is no way around this problem.
An alternative would be deviding the picture into squares with a length and height of 32 pixels (aka tiling), resulting into 15x8 tiles. Displaying it would however involve many texture switches while drawing which might become a bottleneck. On the other hand you would save a lot of memory using a tiled approach.
