iPhone App Dev - Pulling XML Data - When and How Often - iphone

I have a small APP which allows users to view information on Beers and Beers they have tried for a local Bars Beer Club.
I have 4 Views. Beer Menu, All Stats, My Stats and Settings.
Originally, I thought to pull all of the data via a web service and return xml at initial load of the app, and use it throughout.
OR...
I could just pull what I need when I need it. This would result in just pulling the data I need, which would be faster, but it would result in more requests. What would be better:
a) pull all data, store globally, build views as needed.
b) pull only data I need, when I need it. This means if they click on a beer, I would make a request for that beers info. If they clicked on 10 different beers, then that would be 10 different requests.
What is better? Or does it even matter.

yeah, I think on mobile devices these kind of decisions to matter.
With these kind of concerns I think sometimes there is no right answer but here are a few pointers:
Use json, not xml (if you can)
it's less verbose and, depending on the data, could make a difference to the speed.
Do not block the UI thread
This is really a general guide to all app development, in my opinion. The worst thing you can do is block the UI thread.
Coding for a progressive UI that loads data separately will always be more fiddly than just doing a batch load, and then returning everything. But the extra work will really make your User Experience a lot more pleasurable.
Be clever about your requests
This kinda of carries on from the last point. I'm not saying do a million request, but do try and find a balance before less requests, and loading data as needed (which would suggest more requests).
Try and really think about how the user is going to use your app, and see if you can do some clever pre-fetching based on what you THINK the user might need more in the certain view.
i.e What is the most likely view to be used next? can you pre fetch the data for that?
This last part is really the fine tuning, and will result in a lot of trial and error. But the end result will hopefully be a really great app that just feels fast, and feels right.

I'd go with loading cached data on launch (if it exists) and then load fresh data in the background as needed. This keeps your app as responsive as possible. it's a balance between draining battery life on requests VS responsiveness and data availability. I think the balance is caching information with a timestamp (if the data changes, if not it's even better) and then update as needed.

Best way to keep in sync data in two different applications

I have 2 closed-source application that must share the same data at some point. Both uses REST APIs.
An actual example are helpdesk tickets, they can be created on both applications and i need to update the data on one application when the user adds a new ticket/closes a ticket on the other application and vice versa.
Since is closed-source I can't really modify che code.
I was thinking I can create a third application that every 5 minutes or so, list both applications' tickets for differences on the precedent call, and if the data is different from the precedent call it updates the other application too.
Is there a better way of doing this?
With closed-source applications it's nearly impossible to get something out of them, unless they have some plugin-based setup that you can hook into.
The most efficient way in terms of costs would be to have the first application publish a message on a queue, or call a web-hook that you set, whenever the event is triggered. But as I mentioned, the application needs to support that.
So yeah, your solution is pretty much everything you can do for now, but keep in mind the challenges that you may encounter over time:
What if the results of both APIs are too large to be compared directly? Maybe you need to think about paging the results.
What if your app crashes and you loose the previous state? You need to somehow back it up in an external source
How often you should poll the API to make sure you're getting the updates you need, while keeping a good performance for the existing traffic?

Best way to store dyamic data on iOS App from Web Service

I want to know what is the best way to store data on the iPhone from a web service.
I want the information to be stored on the device so the person doesn't need to access the web service every time he/she needs it. The currently information isn't much and contains less that 150 records. The records might update from time to time and a few new ones will be added. What is the best way to go about storing the data?

If you use ASIHTTPRequest for your network stuff (and if you don't already, I can't sing its praises highly enough), you will find it has a cache layer built in which is perfect for situations like this.
You can activate it with a simple one line;
[ASIHTTPRequest setDefaultCache:[ASIDownloadCache sharedCache]];
And you have full control over the cache policy etc - just read the documentation.
The other simple approach of course is - on the assumption that your web service is returning JSON or XML - simply to store the response in a local file against a hash of the request parameters, then when you request the data again, you can first look to see if the file exists and if it does, return that data rather than going back to the website. You can roll your own cache policies etc too.
Since I discovered ASIHTTPRequest had a cache though, I've not needed to roll my own again.
I find that using coreData or sqllite3 is just overkill for 99% my requirements and a simple cache works very well.
If the data is relational, a Sqlite3 database would be the best storage option you have.
Also, this helps by allowing you to retrieve from the server and to update only the records that have changed, thus saving time and bandwidth.
This is the best option from a scalability point of view as well, as you stated that "current information isn't much", thus giving the impression that this is only a current situation, that may be subjected to further change, probably towards more records being added in time.
Sqite3 also gives you more control and better performance than using, for instance, Core Data. Here's an article explaining some of the details. Moreover, if you work through an Objective-C wrapper, such as FMDB, you get all the advantages without managing the complexity yourself.

Does facebook have its own cache?

While developing Facebook applications I have faced this problem many times that if I delete any image, then it appears on the application while testing, even I delete the whole file then, even, it is executed successfully, so I want to know "Does Facebook have its own cache from where files are executed?".
If so then is there any solution of this problem?
If not then why is happening this?

Not sure about image files (they reside in CDN) but facebook uses MemCached server to cache their stuff.
It's not that it has cache but that its main backing store doesn't provide any more coherency than is strictly necessary. Coherency has a cost, so if you don't need it, it makes sense not to pay the cost.
When operations have no enforced order between them, they may complete as if they were executed in either order. If your retrieval and your delete have on enforced order, then they may complete as if they were executed in either order. This applies even if one operation receives its response before the other operation was sent.
My understanding was that there was a cache. Especially for images and styles.
I have frequently made changes to css and updated images only to be left wondering why i can not see these updates.
I always change my css url to be something like styles/styles.css?time= which remedies everything.
In regards to the images , right click on the image in application and view in browser. Refresh to get the updated image and then go back to you application.

When to Cache the data

Q1) I am designing a iPhone app and want to know on what basis I should take the decision of caching data.
Q2) I have a huge data set which can change frequently. On my app I am showing the data under different categories and is planning to fetch the data from server when a particular category is tapped. This will reduce the data transfer. Also, this data can change frequently but I can store it for let say 30 minutes. What strategy should I take here? Should I store in core data or no caching all together and for each repetitive taps should hit the server?
Please suggest.
What does "hit" mean in this context? Asking the server whether your data is fresh or simply refetching it?
I would suggest that you cache a few MB or so, that you assume that data stays fresh for at least thirty seconds or so (depends on your scenario). If you want the application to feel very fluent, download everything that can be reached with two taps (or so) or less if it isn't yet cached after each tap (as long as that isn't too much data).
You might also want to include a less-data-mode for users who have a traffic-based-costs internet access.
It totally depends upon the frequency of new data. You can cache the data that's to be displayed at the application launch in all your tabs and then let the updated data flow when user makes request for new data.

Best strategy for synching data in iPhone app

I am working on a regular iPhone app which pulls data from a server (XML, JSON, etc...), and I'm wondering what is the best way to implement synching data. Criteria are speed (less network data exchange), robustness (data recovery in case update fails), offline access and flexibility (adaptable when the structure of the database changes slightly, like a new column). I know it varies from app to app, but can you guys share some of your strategy/experience?
For me, I'm thinking of something like this:
1) Store Last Modified Date in iPhone
2) Upon launching, send a message like getNewData.php?lastModifiedDate=...
3) Server will process and send back only modified data from last time.
4) This data is formatted as so:
<+><data id="..."></data></+> // add this to SQLite/CoreData
<-><data id="..."></data></-> // remove this
<%><data id="..."><attribute>newValue</attribute></data></%> // new modified value
I don't want to make <+>, <->, <%>... for each attribute as well, because it would be too complicated, so probably when receive a <%> field, I would just remove the data with the specified id and then add it again (assuming id here is not some automatically auto-incremented field).
5) Once everything is downloaded and updated, I will update the Last Modified Date field.
The main problem with this strategy is: If the network goes down when I am updating something => the Last Modified Date is not yet updated => next time I relaunch the app, I will have to go through the same thing again. Not to mention potential inconsistent data. If I use a temporary table for update and make the whole thing atomic, it would work, but then again, if the update is too long (lots of data change), the user has to wait a long time until new data is available. Should I use Last-Modified-Date for each of the data field and update data gradually?
I would start by making the update routine atomic, since you'll have enough on your hands figuring out how to get the client-server communication working properly.
After that is a good time to consider tweaking it to be incremental, but only after you do some testing to figure out if it's really necessary. If you're tuning your update protocol to be as low bandwidth as possible, you might discover that even a "big" update is downloaded fast enough.
Another way to look at it is to ask yourself, how often is there going to be network trouble when an average user is doing a sync? You probably don't want to tune for unlikely scenarios.
If you are trying to optimize (minimize) the data transfer you may want to consider a different format than XML, since XML is fairly verbose. Or at least you may want to trade in XML readability for space by making each element name and attribute as small as possible, and eliminate all unnecessary whitespace.
Your basic scheme is good. The thing you need to do is to somehow make your updates idempotent so that you can restart a partially-completed transfer without risk. This is a better way to go than to try to implement some sort of true atomic commit (though you could do that too, using, eg, the SQLite database).
In our experience fairly large updates (10s of KB) can be downloaded quite rapidly, if the server is fast enough. No great need to break updates up into tiny bits. But certainly it won't hurt to try to minimize the amount of data transferred by keeping more granular info on "last update".
(And definitely you should use JSON rather than XML as your transmitted data representation.)
Wonder if you have considered using a Sync Framework to manage the synchronization. If that interests you can take a look at the open source project, OpenMobster's Sync service. You can do the following sync operations

Besides that, all modifications are automatically tracked and synced with the Cloud. You can have your app offline when network connection is down. It will track any changes and automatically in the background synchronize it with the cloud when the connection returns. It also provides synchronization like iCloud across multiple devices
Also, modifications in the Cloud are synched using Push notifications, so the data is always current even if it is stored locally.
In your case,

Speed: Only the changes are sent across the network in both directions
Robustness: It stores data in a transactional store like sqlite and any failed updates are communicated in the SyncML payload. Only the successful operations are processed while the failed operations are re-tried during the next sync
