What are your thoughts on go-pgsql and thrift4go?
I'd like to use Go with either Postgres or Hypertable for a project, but I'm curious as to how mature and complete these interfaces are.

I don't have specific experience with go-psql, but since there's no answer I'll write my thoughts.
There are issues with the current implementation, which might bite you (e.g. time resolution lower than seconds is ignored. What happens if you update a single field, but your ORM decides to include a time field within the query?).
Other problem that I see is, there's no promise this project will be maintained as long as you wish.
Another approach is to build a very simple binding to the postgres C interface, and just use it. In that case, the abstraction is not very helpful, but definitely not leaky. And it might be enough.
That's what Russ Cox (from the core Go (golang) team) ended up doing for sqlite.

How to model multilingual database with Zend, l18n mysql?

I know this topic was discusses a couple of times, but none of them represents the ultimate solution for me.
Situation
I'm designing a relational mysql database which later should hold multilingual content. You know this from the Wikipedia or Microsoft Tech Support Pages. The contents should be the same for every language. e.g If translations are missing the site offers you the same content automatically translated or in the languages which the information is available in. If some values are not set, it should fallback to the second or default browser language or translate it e.g. through google. Development environment is Zend.
My ideas so far are for Solving the Problem:
Two Primary Keys: (ID, Language)
Advantage: Easy Database Access through database abstraction layers.
Problem: Foreign Keys, Relations ships, Fallbacks
Columns with language suffix:
Advantage: DB Performance, No relational Problems.
Problem: Database abstraction layers cannot handle this?
Has any concept proven itself or is preferable over the other? Has anyone already created something like this and can share his experience with me? Does a modified Zend DB Controller exist for this situation? How do you link this information to a form?

The second option would be not maintainable (this should be added on the minuses side). To actually add another language you'll need to modify table and abstraction layers. Sounds like a nightmare.
The first option seems much more promising but unfortunately there is a lot to do to make it work. However, from my experience this is rather typical solution, so I would not reinvent the wheel.
What I have to add is, language fallback should be done on the Zend side, database would miss some information. You may think of some kind of index table to hold information such as unique id of the contents and available languages. If you need to serve something, you would read such record, compare it against of Accept Languages and ask database again for valid contents (using the most suitable language). The only problem is, you would need to create such an index table somehow (the best way I see would be trigger on inserting contents to your content table).
A lot of work but the problem is not too easy.
I am working on the exact same problem right now.
Somehow it does not make sense to me to add everything into the same database. Lets say I want to go to the extreme and support some 50 languages this would just bloat my DB. So, I tend to keep my main DB in my main language and then introduce some Zend_Translate concept into it. Zend_Translate should give you the fallback solution you are looking for. While the main navigation and core design is not much of a problem for my web site my biggest concern right now is how to store all the main content and how to translate because these elements contain HTML among other things. For the main content I will probably use some alternate approach and use a separate DB with tables for each language.
My plattform will be a community driven database. So I actually gonna rely on humans translating it. You have to store the information anyways, so my first concern is not the database size or performance, but easy usability. So far my idea is to implement some structure as described above, not yet sure if i'll do it in doctrine or not.
Language decision:
Start, application gets users preset language, secondary language, english mother-tong of the article. Fetching the article from the database I will check the following for every column: 1. is the primary language available? 2. Is the secondary language available? 3. If neither of them, display article in mother-tong or english and offer the user to translate it with suggestions from the google translate api. I guess it's gonna be quite a bit of coating and manipulating controllers or building a business model doing this.

Do I need to use DDD, Unit of Work, Repositories or something similar for simple web apps?

I'm working on a simple eCart system using .net4 (c#). I've been doing a lot of reading about Unit of Work Pattern, Repository Pattern, and Persistence Ignorance. I think I have a grasp on the strategy and benefits to building my layers this way, but for my simple app I'm wondering if it's necessary and if anyone can point me towards good architecture for my scope.
Please correct me if I'm wrong - the main benefits to using repositories are to create fewer trips to the DB and to separate application architecture from DB architecture. IE - what's good for DB performance isn't always good for application design so it's best to design what's best for both and then create an interface between the two.
So here's the question - I want any business transaction that occurs to be saved to the DB as soon as it occurs, so there doesn't seem to be a point in queuing data in repositories and then saving it immediately. Why not just save it directly?
Are there other benefits of DDD that I'm missing or would it be over engineering to build out such a robust architecture for every simple project that comes along? Thanks for any help.
Do you need to use [insert pattern here]: Nope When it comes right down to it, the best practice is always the one that gets your application done, and meets the time, monetary, and technical requirements.
But if you take the "lets just get it done" approach, then be aware of the Technical Debt you might be incurring.
Also there are a lot of reasons to use some of these patterns (and they don't always have to do with performance), particularly the Unit Of Work pattern. This has more to do with the requirements and restrictions that often come with ORM's and such. These issues can be a bit complex, but I suspect as you begin to implement some of these things you'll start to realize what those issues are and come to understand why these patterns are useful.
Agree with CodingGorilla. Patterns are great unless they conflict with YAGNI.
If every transaction needs to be written immediately (that is, if you have potential contention between the actions of two users) then you will need a queuing mechanism or you can use the underlying transactional mechanism of whatever data repository you might be using (e.g. SQL)

MongoDB as the primary database?

I have read a lot of the MongoDB.
I like all the features it provides, but I wonder if it's possible to have it as the only database for my application, including storing sensitive information.
I know that it compromises the durability part in ACID but I will as a solution have 1 master and 2 slaves in different locations.
If I do that, is it possible to use it as the primary database, storing everything?

Lets put it this way.
I really need a document storage rather than traditional dbms for be able to create my flexible application. But is MongoDB reliable enough to store customer sensitive information if I have multiple database replications and master-slave? Cause as far as I know one major downside is that it compromises the D in ACID. So I solve it with multiple databases.
Now there is not major problems such as lost of data issues?
And someone told me that with MongoDB a customer could be billed twice. Could someone enlighten this?

I'm guessing whoever told you that was talking about eventual consistency. Some NoSQL databases are eventually consistent, meaning that you could have conflicting writes. MongoDB is not, though, it is strongly consistent (just like a relational database).
Your application being flexible or not has absoutely nothing to do with wether you use "nosql", a "document db" or a proper RDBMS. Nobody using your application will care either way.
If you need flexibility while coding, you should research into frameworks, like ActiveRecord for Ruby, which can make DB-interfacing much more simple, generic and powerful. At that level, you can gain alot more than just changing the DB, and you can even become DB-agnostic, meaning you can change DB without changing any code. Indeed, I have found ActiveRecord to boost my productivity many many fold by alleviating me from tedious and error-prone "code intermixed with SQL".
Indeed, if you feel you need a schemaless database, for critical data, you are doing something wrong. You are putting your own convenience over critical needs of the projects, or in ignorance thinking you won't get into problems later. Sooner or later, lack of consistency will bite your ass, hard!
I feel you are hesistant towards RDBMS because you are not really that comfortable with all the jargons, syntax and sound CS principles.
Believe me, if you're going to create an application of any value, you are hundred times better learning SQL, ACID and good database-principles in the first place. Just read up on the basics, and build your knowledge from wherever you are now. It's the same for each and every one of us, it takes time, but you learn to do things right from the start.
Low-level tools like MongoDB and equivalent just provide you with infinitely more ammunition to shoot yourself in the foot with. They make it seem easy. In reality however, they leave the hard work for you, the coder, to deal with, while an RDBMS will handle more of the cruft for you once you grok the basics.
Why use computers at all, if you want more work, you can just go back to paper. Design will be a breeze, and implementation can be super-quick. Done. Except it won't be right of course.
In the real world, we can't afford to ignore consistency, database design and many more sound CS principles. Which is why it's a great idea to study them in the first place, and keep learning more and more.
Don't buy into the hype. You ask question about MongoDB here, but include that you really need its features. With 25 years of computer experience, I simply don't buy it. If you think creatively, an RDBMS can be made to do whatever you want it to, or a framework can be utilized to save you from errors and wasted time.
Crafting ACID properties onto MongoDB seems like more work to me, and by experience, sounds like an excercise in futility, rather than using what is already designed to suit such purposes.
Is it possible? Sure. Why not? It's possible to store everything as XML in text files if you wanted to.
Is it the best idea? It depends on what you're trying to do, the rest of your system architecture, the scale your site is intended to achieve, and so on.

Risk evaluation for framework selection

I'm planning on starting a new project, and am evaluating various web frameworks. There is one that I'm seriously considering, but I worry about its lasting power.
When choosing a web framework, what should I look for when deciding what to go with?
Here's what I have noticed with the framework I'm looking at:
Small community. There are only a few messages on the users list each day
No news on the "news" page since the previous release, over 6 months ago
No svn commits in the last 30 days
Good documentation, but wiki not updated since previous release
Most recent release still not in a maven repository
It is not the officially sanctioned Java EE framework, but I've seen several people mention it as a good solution in answers to various questions on Stack Overflow.
I'm not going to say which framework I'm looking at, because I don't want this to get into a framework war. I want to know what other aspects of the project I should look at in my evaluation of risk. This should apply to other areas besides just Java EE web, like ORM, etc.
I'll say that so-called "dead" projects are not that great a danger as long as the project itself is solid and you like it. The thing is that if the library or framework already does everything you can think you want, then it's not such a big deal. If you get a stable project up and running then you should be done thinking about the framework (done!) and focus only on your webapp. You shouldn't be required to update the framework itself with the latest release every month.
Personally, I think the most important point is that you find one that is intuitive to your project. What makes the most sense? MVC? Should each element in the URL be a separate object? How would interactivity (AJAX) work? It makes no sense to pick something just because it's an "industry standard" or because it's used by a lot of big-name sites. Maybe they chose it for needs entirely different from yours. Read the tutorials for each framework and be critical. If it doesn't gel with your way of thinking, or you have seen it done more elegantly, then move on. What you are considering here is the design and good design is tantamount for staying flexible and scalable. There's hundreds of web frameworks out there, old and new, in every language. You're bound to find half a dozen that works just the way you want to think in your project.
Points I consider mandatory:
Extensible through plug-ins: check if there's already plug-ins for various middleware tasks such as memcache, gzip, OpenID, AJAX goodness, etc.
Simplicity and modularity: the more complex, the steeper the learning curve and the less you can trust its stability; the more "locked" to specific technologies, the higher the chances that you'll end up with a chain around your ankle.
Database agnostic: can you use sqlite3 for development and then switch to your production DB by changing a single line of code or configuration?
Platform agnostic: can you run it on Apache, lighttpd, etc.? Could you port it to run in a cloud?
Template agnostic: can you switch out the template system? Let's say you hire dedicated designers and they really want to go with something else.
Documentation: I am not that strict if it's open-source, but there would need to be enough official documentation to enable me to fully understand how to write my own plug-ins, for example. Also look to see if there's source code of working sites using the same framework.
License and source code: do you have access to the source code and are you allowed to modify it? Consider if you can use it commercially! (Even if you have no current plans to do that currently.)
All in all: flexibility. If I am satisfied with all four points, I'm pretty much done. Notice how I didn't have anything about "deadness" in there? If the core design is good and there's easily installable plug-ins for doing every web-dev 3.0-beta buzzword thing you want to do, then I don't care if the last SVN commit was in 2006.
Here are the things I look for in a framework before I decide to use it for a production environment project:
Plenty of well laid out and written documentation. Bad documentation just means I'm wasting time trying to find how everything works. This is OK if I am playing around with some cool new micro framework or something else, but not when it's for a client.
A decently sized community so that you can ask questions, etc. A fun and active IRC channel is a big plus.
Constant iteration of the product. Are bugs being closed or opened on a daily/weekly basis? Probably a good sign.
I can go through the code of the framework and understand what's going on. Good framework code means that the projects longterm life has a better chance of success.
I enjoy working with it. If I play with it for a few hours and it's the worst time of my life, I sure as hell won't be using it for a client.
I can go on, but those are some primary ones off the top of my head.
Besides looking at the framework, you also need to consider a lot of things about yourself (and any other team members) when evaluating the risks:
If the framework is a new, immature, "bleeding-edge" framework, are you going to be willing and able to debug it and fix or work around whatever problems you encounter?
If there is a small community, you'll have to do a lot of this debugging and diagnosis yourself. Will you have time to do that and still meet whatever deadlines you may have?
Have you looked at the framework yourself to determine how good it is, or are you willing to rely on what others say about it? Why do you trust their judgment?
Why do you want to use this rather than the "officially sanctioned Java EE framework"? Is it a pragmatic reason, or just a desire to try something new?
If problems with the framework cause you to miss deadlines or deliver a poor product, how will you talk about it with your boss or customer?
All the signs you've cited could be bad news for your framework choice.
Another thing that I look for are books available at Amazon and such. If there's good documentation available, it means that authors believe it has traction and you'll be able to find users that know it.
The only saving grace I can think of is relative maturity. If the framework or open source component is mature, there's a chance that it does the job as written and doesn't require further extension.
There should still be a bug tracker with some evidence of activity, because no software is without bugs (except for mine). But it need not be a gusher of requests in that case.

Would you use v3.5 of the ADO.NET Entity Framework, or wait for v4.0?

I was surprised to find a public letter proposing a vote of no confidence in the entity framework (see http://efvote.wufoo.com/forms/ado-net-entity-framework-vote-of-no-confidence/)
Would the reasons stated in the letter keep you from using the current version of the entity framework? Would you rather wait for v4.0? Or rather use another ORM?
The current version of EF is definitely not perfect, and has lots of gotchas and drawbacks. I probably wouldn't use it right now - but the upgrade path to EF v2 (or is it EF4?) sure looks pretty rosy!

deferred loading configurable as an option
much improved designer with support for pluralization/singularization (even in multiple languages!)
ability to do "domain first" design and create database from your model
ability to have self-tracking entities across multiple layers that allow you to send data to the client and get back changes and apply them to your entity context
All in all, EF v2 looks very promising and I'm very eager to give it a serious spin. If it really keeps all the promises out there right now, it's definitely a winner!

Another ORM.
Don't get me wrong you should get flamed with responses, but currently only nHibernate is functionally complete.
I'm a TDD fan, so want an easily testable POCO ORM solution. If that's your bag then EF3.5 is out. EF4.0 is introducing it (http://blogs.msdn.com/adonet/archive/2009/05/21/poco-in-the-entity-framework-part-1-the-experience.aspx) , but it still has at least 1 big drawback -> doesn't support inheritance.
NHibernate is more complete, but EF could be easier to use. As ever, best tool for the job... but if it's an Enterprise-scale TDD developed app, go nHibernate.

I tried using it for my current project, which basically involves rewriting our current mess of a data layer.
It just doesn't work.
First, if you're trying to base an Entity off of a View, the designer tries to force every NOT NULL property to be an entity key... which is pretty much never what I wanted. To work around that you have to edit the xml in at least two places, and do it every time you add an object because it refreshes and re-adds the EntityKey properties. Must specify mapping for all key properties in Entity Framework?
Second, when you are creating associations you MUST use every entity key - How can you make an association without using all entity keys in entity framework?
Those two things held me up for 3 days, then I went back to Linq to SQL and had it done in a couple hours. (Well, at least the part of the system I was struggling with... ) I don't know if those are in the Vote of No Confidence, but it's just not ready in my opinion.
Also with the lack of answers I got here on every EF question I've asked, I have to assume current usage is so low that getting help and support is going to be difficult... which is possibly the BIGGEST reason not to use something.
Let's hope the next version is better...
EDIT: OUr current plan is to stick with Linq 2 SQL (I have to finish a project by Friday) and then evaluate all the other ORMs to see if anything else is better. The other developer hates L2S for the record, but I've never had any major problems using it...
EF has some rich design time support, but I have to agree that nHibernate is the way to go, despite the learning curve. If you need to make something fast and don't care about TDD or serialization (which is a large weakness of all of MS's ORM offerings) go EF.
Well My experience of Version 1 was interesting. I wanted to use POCOs but it didn't support it. After reading around I came across some code from a bod at microsoft that did this.
It was a bit messy to generate the code but on the whole this part of the process was not so bad.
A real nasty part that I came across was the lack of Concurrency checking built in, for N-tier development. You have to manage this yourself which after looking at the problem was not so bad, especially if you want to hand back the versioning back to the client for user intervention.
Second nasty and absolutely stupid thing missing was the IN keyword for LINQ queries. Not supported and so needs to be worked around. I found a solution but was a real mess bringing in some other code that quickly patched up the omissions.
Would I use EF 4.0 (2.0). Yes, absolutely, why not? In fact on stage 2 I will be using this. It looks like it supports POCOs, it looks like my concurrency model will move straight across with no problems (basically delta copy stuff). Its all good so far and I hope this time round that the Big guys at Microsoft have seen the errors of their ways and provided a solution that works.
If your buying into entity development and the whole Concept Model first thing, then its the only way to go for a complete Microsoft solution. Although the stuff being done on the M language might eclipse the idea and move the whole modelling thing back to the Database.
If you not buying into the Entity stuff then I would strongly go Enterprise Library. Its a proven technology that works every time built on a solid code foundation and Database centric paradigm. I would also go this route if you think that Stored Procedures are the bees knees and like what they bring to the table.
If your feeling really exotic and feel a bit frisky I would go with a NO-SQL approach such as CouchDB. This however does take some getting used to. Its damn weird and feels really really wrong. But things get developed in super quick time and the solutions seem to be robust and faster than expected. I would not got for this type of solution though if your big into Normalization and think that it can be applied to a NO-SQL approach. The whole model needs to be shifted on its head and the application will be needed to be modelled in a way that is driven by the technology applied.
I find the CouchDB way a bit dirty and very very wrong. But it has so many compelling reasons to use it, that I think it will seep into the psyche of every programmer, and it will definitely go mainstream in the next couple of years.
My biggest gripe still with the whole Entity thing though even in the new version 4 is that there really has not been much thought into N-tier environments. It still got a feel about it being a 2 tier solution with a lot of boiler plate code still needed to be done by the end user (developer), to get it working in a robust and dependable N-Tier way.
