Recently I've seen some people using a string of code in their comment or wall post in order to do something interesting, such as hyperlinking the whole text. It looks quite fun though, but I don't know whether it's Facebook-defined code or any kind of language behind.
For example: ##+[0:[158038637615605:0: YOUR TEXT HERE ]]
I guess the number 158038637615605 could be an app's ID.
Any idea?
The code seems to be how Facebook is able to encode links in text without having to store any additional meta data. I assume they expect the format to be so strange as to not occur in a persons normal updates. The syntax was probably released by an engineer, or gleamed by someone examining the JavaScript operations as a user goes about tagging something.
A similar thing I've been seeing goes along the lines of:
Your phone has a name. To figure it out, you take the last three digits of your phone number - for example 635 and type it the comment section of this post like #*[635:0] and then remove the * and post, and you get your phone's name.
I suspect they're making exceptions now to prevent the user from typing it manually.
Site note; 158038637615605 seems to be the ID of a Facebook page.

When an user enters a number into a field (representing the number of persons in a group), I want to have a section of google forms to be multiplied that many times - one for each person. In each such section I need to enter their details. Anybody did something similar to this ?
I think what you're trying to do isn't possible (without using App Scripts) but I have built a little example of something that might work for you. Please see if this will work and get back to ASAP.
Pretty much it has a title page asks the user how many people they want to sign up. Then, depending on the answer, the form directs them to a section with the appropriate number of sign-ups.
TL;DR: look for bold text to see the questions without context.
When something bad (or good, but this is a cruel world) happens, FB has a feature to change your profile picture - when USA legalized gay marriage you could have had a rainbow flag over your pic, when SW7 came out, you could have added a lightsaber, etc.
I wanted to do something similiar for a social campaign and started writing an app for that. I figured it should be possible, as in case of Star Wars it seemed to be managed by private company (Disney), not FB itself.
My plan was to:
download current user profile pic (done, though I cannot get good quality; anyway, gonna fix that later)
in-memory add the banner (done)
upload that photo with banner added (done)
redirect user to photo from (3) with makeprofile=1 as proposed here, to make it users profile picture
profit
Unfortunately, the answer quoted in (4) doesn't seem to be working anymore.
My question is: is this still possible? If yes - how?
If not - do I have any alternatives?
I've also tried figuring out how is the link "Make Profile Picture" in webview composed. It looks like:
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=<<picture id>&set=a.<<similiar, but not the same as picture id>>.<<not a clue>>.<<seems to be profile id>>&type=3&makeprofile=1&profile_id=<<profile id, duh>>&pp_source=photo_view
If anyone knows what following parts mean, my issue would probably be solved:
<<similiar, but not the same as picture id>>
<<not a clue>>
<<seems to be profile id>>
I also tried figuring out ProfilePictureSource, but the abstraction itself isn't described anywhere (or I couldn't find it) and judging by permissions needed, that doesn't seem like what I need (why would I need any pages, groups, mailbox or business permissions when I only want to update a profile pic?). If that is the way and I just lost it, please tell me how to use it.
Another way to answer this question would be to propose alternative way of having the banner over profile picture.
For the record, I'm using Python with facebook-sdk wrapper, but only for fast prototyping - I could as well use Java with Spring Social, DLang with manual HTTP calls, whatever - technology isn't an issue, I need a general way here.
I am the admin of a Facebook group and am trying to keep track of how many people each user has added. I cannot seem to nail down how I can easily write a script to:
Determine how many people a User has added.
Echo that to a file in the format $User:$number_of_added_members.
I've been made aware I cannot do this with the API, I am banging my head against a wall here. If anyone could at least point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
I just did this...
actually i am a programmer and did it in the hard way because i needed group by users. I hoped that the graph api at least give me an xml of user with added by in order to make my code read it but it did not so what i did is just to copy the table on the members page and paste it on a txt file and make a python code read it and make a dictionary of user: number_of_users_he_added.
it was quick but there is a problem that the members page does not give u all the results, its infinity scroll and i have a lot of members.
u can write a js script that read the dom instead of copy paste or even a chrome extension but still have the problem with the infinity scroll.
if facebook provide the added by field in their graph it will be great
Maybe you can work with the site which lists all members and look for the string below the member which says "added by on " But I'm not sure, how long this stays before it switches to "in the group since"
Edit
Use a crawler software like the one in Symfony to traverse the HTML of the page. You will need a PHP CLI for this tool. DOMCrawler from Symfony
I'm trying to get version of a photo that FB uses as the background image for album layouts where one side is always exactly 206px and the other one at least the same, for example https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/p206x206/10401476_409218399235620_1454525834273554679_n.jpg?oh=eda59fce63113796b35c46cc4bec162a&oe=55760EFD&gda=1433681435_6b4729404e05493108c271a50c753d7f I've scoured both the graph and SO, but am having absolutely no luck here. I'm aware that you can get 3 versions of a photo using type=album/thumbnail/normal ie https://graph.facebook.com/409218399235620/picture?type=album (you'd think this one would work, but they probably never updated it to redirect to the new size?). I've tried all kinds of variants of this knowing that the graph documentation is pretty crap, to no avail.
I've also used the Explorer to for example pull up ?fields=images, but it's never one of the listed images there. I've tried using widths, replacing parts of the URL etc. etc. I am running the checks with a valid access_token.
I've pretty much resigned myself to just resizing myself, but given the time I've spent on this, I thought I'd at least put it out there in case someone else has had the same problem, and come up with a solution.
How do you implement custom css on a Facebook activity feed plugin? This related post does not fully answer the question. Is this the right way?
Where does the
<fb:tag name='link'></fb:tag>
go? Inside of of the
<fb:activity site="..." app_id="..." ></fb:activity>
outside of it, before or after? I'm sort of confused...
the only way i use activity feed is when its in a widget that will generically upate in all posts. Anyone who inserts these snippets into blog posts or other 'hard to find and edit later' posts and pages, will regret it
Why?
Because Facebook changes their script every month or so and the script snippet you inserted wont work anymore
I have hundreds of blank areas in blog posts where i inserted an activity feed and the script always stops working after some weeks when fb adds some code or changes the location of some script or renames a file and the old script has no canonical or generic way of readjusting.
There is no point in using a script which gets made obsolete every month and you then need to find all posts where you inserted the snippet and change it for the new working code.
Im always having to reinsert new code into my fb social widgets because they cease to function...
Not viable unless you take it into consideration. Only insert in spaces where oyu wil notice it when it stops working
As Facebook Answers answered, you cannot really style it with a custom CSS, nor via JS, as the activity feed widget creates an iframe.
The info from martincarlin87 is useful, but that is not exactly what you get with the Activity Plugin, which is what you meant I guess:
http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/activity/
For using this you cannot really interact with the Facebook API, it is a little world apart. By now... (July 12th 2012)
Facebook PHP SDK: https://github.com/facebook/php-sdk
Comes with some simple examples, I would suggest uploading it to your server and tinkering with it, Facebook has a steep learning curve but here at Stack Overflow there is even a Facebook section: facebook.stackoverflow.com so just take each step at a time and if you can't get it by reading the facebook docs: developers.facebook.com then you can always ask here and I'm sure someone will be able to help you.
Getting Started: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/php/
Once you have made an app, you add it to your fan page and then you will be abel to test what information you can get using the Graph API Explorer: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/explorer
That post you refer to is a red herring I'm afraid. If you put any HTML between the activity tags it gets rendered BEFORE the iframe is added. So its a no starter, from what I can see. However, I eventually found a solution, which I gave on that thread. I am repeating it here in case somebody searching doesn't see the other thread.
I managed to customise an Activity plugin, after a great deal of effort.
You can see the result here:
http://www.quniverse.co.uk/shopdata/about_us.php
Feel free to post a comment on that site, it exists purely for test purposes so I'm not fussed what goes up there provided its clean.
I explain how I achieved this in the blog article posted here:
http://facebookanswers.co.uk/?p=302
To summarise briefly:
You cannot insert CSS into the activity plugin.
Rely on the fact it has a transparent background, and supply your own.
Turn off the header and supply your own.
You can specify a light or a dark font, a few fontfaces and a border colour.
If you read the blog article you will get a full explanation.
