Some of the stakeholders on my project expressed doubt in easily recognizing hidden vertical content to scroll to in an MGWT ScrollPanel (without taking a swipe at it). As an attempt to address the concern I'd like to always show the pretty semi-transparent vertical scrollbar as both a hint of more content to scroll to and an indication of the ratio between the amount of displayed vs. all content in the panel.
Is it possible to keep the panel's scrollbars permanently displayed? At first I thought the setShowScrollBarY(boolean) would do the trick but quickly proved myself wrong.
P.S.: Shouldn't there be an m-gwt StackOverflow tag by now? AFAIKT MGWT has gained sufficient traction to have an MGWT-specific stream of questions.
I have had the same issues with clients that suggested that showing scrollbars would be a good idea. If you cut your content right its easy to see for the user that there is more content..
Anyhow I just added a setHideScrollBar(boolean) to the trunk. Download it from ( https://oss.sonatype.org/service/local/artifact/maven/redirect?r=snapshots&g=com.googlecode.mgwt&a=mgwt&e=jar&v=LATEST) and give it a try. Maybe we should also think of an option to flash the scrollbars once to indicate that there is more content.

This is perhaps a more general question as I'm looking for ideas on how to approach a problem working with PDFView/PDFKit. I have a small sample application that allows you to display a page, select a range of text and then associate a comment with that text. Once the comment is saved the comment is displayed on the PDFView page in the margin via an overridden draw() function for PDFView.
Problem is that with very small margins the comments can be very squished. I've been looking for a straight-forward solution and would very much appreciate ideas on how to address it.
The obvious (ie, easy) solution is to change the actual "page size" in the PDFView and have wider margins, but of course PDFKit has no support for that (I don't think). Another thought was to go to a custom PDFView library but the only ones I found when I last looked were iOS (not Cocoa) based.
Last idea was to instead of drawing directly on the page have some sort of pop-up window (like a sticky-note) contain the note but then it would need to be moved dynamically with the scrolling of the page. And of course one other was to recreate the PDF dynamically for viewing and make all the pages larger... but I've not dug into how much of a performance hit / effort that would entail.
Maybe there's a simple/obvious solution that I've missed?

I have noticed on certain websites that are implemented as a single page and free scrolling view in browsers that when you trigger a pop-up or modal window a second scrollbar appears to allow the user to scroll through the content of the window. The primary scrollbar is also active but not very effective since the pop-up or modal window blocks out most of the screen.
I cannot imagine that this implementation approach would have very strong usability reasons, so I was wondering if there is a valid technical reason or constraint. But if there is a valid argument from a UX design perspective then I am also interested in finding out the rationale behind it.
When content overflows (too big to fit in the container element), the browser adds a scrollbar. Looks like in your case, the modal is taking up 100% width/height of the viewport, but it's still too small to fit all the content, hence the vertical scrollbar.
To get rid of the scrollbar, people usually add overflow: hidden on the element which hides the scrollbars, but also doesn't allow the user to scroll. This is fine if the content is not important... such as a graphic that's meant to be a background image or something of that sort.
It's poor design in my opinion. If there is enough content that the user will have to scroll to see it, there's no reason to put it in a modal. If you have a modal, keep it small. In some cases where it's necessary though, you can hide the main scroll-bar when the modal is in view.
I am trying to build an app similar to USAToday i.e. each "article" is a mix of images and text that the user scrolls vertically to read if it covers more than than the size of the screen. Scrolling horizontally brings up the next article and so on.
Each article should have "paging enabled" so that the content moves as if you are turning a page in a book whether you are moving vertically or horizontally.
I must have looked at every tutorial for Scroll and Page navigation, but I am drawing a blank. Any help is much appreciated.

... but (a) it builds ok but simulator only shows a featureless black screen, and I cannot work out how to correct it, and (b) it only scrolls horizontally.
The sample code that you reference is old so I think something has changed in the SDK since then. I was able to at least get the code to run by changing the MainWindow.xib file. I opened that file in Interface Builder and then selected the Window and then in the Window Attributes Inspector I ticked "Visible at Launch". Then the tutorial would at least run and show the colors. I think you might find that there are more issues with it though.
When you are wanting to page something, the real trick is setting the content size of the scroll view.

I'm an iPhone developer, but new to web development. I've done some basic HTML websites and made one in iWeb as well. I'm trying to branch out to mobile web development now, so I checked out Dashcode.
Anyway, I'm trying to put a Call Button, Mail Button, and Map Button in horizontal alignment. I realize that I can add a Column Layout and have two buttons in a row, but that's the most I've gotten.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Edit: I still haven't figured this out yet. I was given advice about a fixed position button bar, but I am not sure how to implement it. I've been looking at code, but haven't gotten it yet. Still trying though. Any help is appreciated!
What i do usually is to select the element you can't align horizontally and then go to the inspector -> dimension tab and in disposition you select fixed absolute.
This should work but beware because if you've the intention to change element's place dynamically you may have some surprise...
I think you are looking for something like this.
A fixed position button bar is created with several buttons side by side.

I have a project in which I need a way to display essentially a list of tabs, each with their own content pages, down the left side of the page. I'm using TabLayoutPanels elsewhere to good effect, but after looking at how they are constructed it seems like it would be quite a bit of work to undo Google's carefully constructed layout and get it to work in any other orientation than top-aligned.
This doesn't seem like it would be an uncommon layout, so does anyone know of a successful implementation of this kind of container?
Best you can do is use DeckPanel, and make your custom tab controls to switch visible widget in that DeckPanel.
