Listing fields in a mongodb object - mongodb

I am developing a system where items can be shared with other users via an access key. I'm storing the access keys as fields within a shareinfo object (embedded within the item's document), as shown below:

When an item is accessed I check shareinfo.key and find if its valid or not.
Currently, to list the keys I am loading (in Java) the entire shareinfo object in memory and running keySet() on it to retrieve and return the keys while the rest of the data is wasted.
Here's the problem: I want to get the list of keys (i.e. object field names) without the accompanying data (because in some cases the permissions object is noticeably large).
I could not find any query in the mongodb docs for such a query. I want to know whether it's possible or not? Or is there an optimized way to load the list of field names into the application without the accompanying field values?

I had the same issue when trying to understand the structure of an existing mongodb database using the mongodb shell. Then I found that I can use the JavaScript function Object.keys() to retrieve an array of the object fields. (Tested with MongoDb 2.4.2)

MongoDB has a schema-less design, which means that any document could have different fields contained within it from any other document. To get an exhaustive list of all the fields for all the documents, you would need to traverse all the documents in the collection and enumerate each field. For any reasonably sized collection this is going to be an extremely expensive operation.
There are a couple of helpers that make this more simple: Variety and schema.js . They both allow you to limit the documents inspected, and they report on coverage as well. Both amount to doing a map/reduce on the collections, but are at least simpler than having to write one yourself.

If you are just looking for top-level fields across all documents (don't care about sub-fields and all the details statistics provided by variety)

MONGODB - Add duplicate field with different value

Is there a way to write a script that updates a document by adding a duplicate field with a different value? I cannot use set as that replaces the existing value. I cannot use push as the field is in an object, not an array. I even tried creating the new field with a different name and renaming it which also replaces the existing field.
You cannot have duplicate fields in a Mongo record. A Mongo collection is a collection of documents, otherwise known as objects. You cannot have a duplicate field in an object and Mongo is no different.
MongoDB (and any other database that I have come across so far) is built around the idea that individual fields are identifiable so they can be filtered by, grouped by, sorted by, etc... That also explains why MongoDB does not provide support for the scenario you're facing. That being said, MongoDB can be used as a dumb datastore for arbitrary JSON data. And the JSON specification does not say anything about duplicate field names which is probably why you can actually store such a document in MongoDB in the first place.
Anyway, there is no way to achieve what you want without loading the entire document, changing it (by adding the duplicate field(s)) and then replacing the whole document. That, however, will work.
I personally cannot think of a reasonable scenario where this sort of document could make sense, though. So I would strongly suggest you revisit your document structure.

How to do global search in MongoDB?

What I mean as global search is searching for documents in specified collections, for example, searching for a name in both User and Organization collections and will return both user and organization documents that match the criteria.
Is it possible to simply copy the documents in User and Organization into another collection and do a search in it?
No, it is not possible to do a multi-collection search automatically. There's no reason however that you couldn't perform the same query on multiple collections and combine the results.
While you could duplicate the data into another collection for query purposes, if you need to be guaranteed that the source collection's values matches identically with the "index" collection, you'll need to implement your own multi-phase transaction (example) as MongoDb doesn't have a multi-collection atomic commit. Or, you can accept the fact that the "index" table may be out of sync. Of course, it could be periodically updated through custom code. Further, it means your working set has increased as you're double storing data. Also, if you then need to grab data from individual collections (to grab more of the source document), you've likely not gained anything and made things worse when compared to doing multiple queries in the first place.
You could store related documents in the same collection and take advantage of the built-in indexing offered. Of course, this comes with the caveat that if your documents are now typed, you may find it more challenging to build MongoDb indexes that are efficient. Every changing/new document must go through the indexing pipeline, which may introduce significant overhead.
If it's only a few collections, I'd just do multiple searches without understanding more deeply your requirements. If not, the second best would be to combine documents into a single collection. Last choice would be to copy the data.

Dynamic Data inside MongoDB

I'm making dynamic data storage, which it was in relational data base as:
form -> field
form -> form_data
field -> field_data
form_data -> filed_data
and field data contains field_id, form_data_id, and value
but for scalability and performance I'm planing to move form_data and field_data to MongoDB and my problem now is how to design MongoDB collections, using one collection for all form_data and move field_data to map inside it and key is field_id and value is the value of this field_data, or make collection for each form record and store data direct in form_data without map as the all data in this case will be consistent.
In document-oriented databases like MongoDB you should always favor aggregation over references, because they don't support JOIN-operations on the database to link multiple documents.
That means that a "A has many B" relationship between two entities should not be modeled as two tables A and B, but rather as one collection of A where each A has an embedded array of B objects.
In the context of MongoDB, there is however an additional limitation: MongoDB doesn't like objects which grow. When an object accumulates more and more data over its lifetime, the object will grow. That means that the hard drive space MongoDB allocated for it will run out again and again, which will require space reallocation. This takes performance and fragments the database. Also, MongoDB has an artificial size limit for documents, mainly to discourage developers from designing growing objects.
Therefor:
When the data exists at creation, embed it directly.
When more and more data is added after creation, put it into a different collection.
When a form has X fields, the number of fields will likely not change much over its lifetime. So you should embed the fields and their descriptions directly into the form object.
But the number of answers entered into these forms will grow over time, which means that these should be treated as separate objects in a separate collection.
So I would recommend you to have two collections, forms and form_data.
Each document in forms embeds a sub-object of fields with the static field properties.
Each document in form_data has a field with the _id of the corresponding form and embeds a sub-object of field_data which uses the same keys as the fields sub-object of forms and stores the entries the user made in that form.
When your use-case requires frequent access to the aggregated data (like when you want to publish the up-to-date statistics on a public website), you could also store this information in the fields of forms to avoid an expensive aggregation query over many form_data documents. MongoDB in general recommends to orient your database schema rather on your performance requirements than on the semantics of your data.
Regarding your remark "all data in this case will be consistent": keep in mind that MongoDB does not enforce referential integrity. When an application deletes or changes a document, it's the responsibility of the application to fix any outdated references to it in other documents.

MongoDB embedded documents vs. referencing by unique ObjectIds for a system user profile

I'd like to code a web app where most of the sections are dependent on the user profile (for example different to-do lists per person etc) and I'd love to use MongoDB. I was thinking of creating about 10 embedabble documents for the main profile document and keep everything related to one user inside his own document.
I don't see a clear way of using foreign keys for mongodb, the only way would be to create a field to_do_id with the type of ObjectId for example, but they would be totally unrelated internally, just happen to have the same Ids I'd have to query for.
Is there a limit on the number of embedded document types inside a top level document that could degrade performance?
How do you guys solve the issue of having a central profile document that most of the documents have to relate to in presenting a view per person?
Do you use semi foreign keys inside MongoDb and have fields with ObjectId types that would have some other document's unique Id instead of embedding them?
I cannot feel what approach should be taken when. Thank you very much!
There is no special limit with respect to performance. The larger the document, though, the longer it takes to transmit over the wire. The whole document is always retrieved.
I do it with references. You can choose between simple manual references and the database DBRef as per this page: http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/Database+References
The link above documents how to have references in a document in a semi-foreign key way. The DBRef might be good for what you are trying to do, but the simple manual reference is very efficient.
I am not sure a general rule of thumb exists for which reference approach is best. Since I use Java or Groovy mostly, I like the fact that I get a DBRef object returned. I can check for this datatype and use that to decide how to handle the reference in a generic way.
So I tend to use a simple manual reference for references to different documents in the same collection, and a DBRef for references across collections.

Zend: index generation and the pros and cons of Zend_Search_Lucene

I've never came across an app/class like Zend Search Lucene before, as I've always queried my database.
Zend_Search_Lucene operates with
documents as atomic objects for
indexing. A document is divided into
named fields, and fields have content
that can be searched.
A document is represented by the
Zend_Search_Lucene_Document class, and
this objects of this class contain
instances of Zend_Search_Lucene_Field
that represent the fields on the
document.

information can be added to the index.
Application-specific information or

So this is basically saying that I can apply this to anything including databases, the key thing here is making indexes for searching.
What I'm trying to grasp is where exactly should I store the indexes in my application, let's take for example we have phones stored in a database, a manufacturers, models - how should I categorize the indexes?
If I'm making indexes of users with say, addresses I obviously wouldn't want them to be publically viewable, I'm just confused on how it all works out together, if there are known disadvantages, any gotchas I should know while using it.
A Lucene index is stored outside the database. I'd store it in a "data" directory as a sister to your controllers, models, and views. But you can store it anywhere; you just need to specify the path when you open the index for querying.
It's basically a redundant copy of the documents stored in your database, and you have to keep them in sync yourself. That's one of the disadvantages: you have to write code to populate the Lucene index based on results of a query against your database. As you add data to the database, you have to update your Lucene index as well.
An advantage of using an external full-text index solution is that you can reduce the workload on your RDBMS. To find a document, you execute a search using the Lucene API. The result should include a field containing the primary key value (as part of the document but no need to make it analyzed for FT search). You get this field back when you do a Lucene search, so you can look up the respective row in the database.
