Invalid .ost file and no Mail icon in Control Panel to fix it - email

I have a really interesting situation here. I'm running Windows 8 Pro x64 with Office 2013 (Office 365, more specifically) running. Somewhere while I was setting up Outlook, I made a mistake causing it to create in invalid .ost file. I found the file in Explorer and it happens to be an empty file.
All the solutions to this involve using the Mail icon in the Control Panel. That'd be great, but it doesn't exist! I've searched and searched for solutions to this issue, and I can't find a single one that applies to Windows 8. Either the solution is so outdated that it's not even usable in Windows 8, or the solution somehow doesn't work with my setup.
I've come to an absolute end of ideas for this, and I've decided to come to see if anyone here can wrestle down my problem. Thanks for your help!
Edit: I've thought of a few possible solutions, and the only one that seems remotely feasible seems to be to completely restart the Outlook setup process. However, I can't figure out how to do this, and I can't reinstall just Outlook because it's part of Office 365. Any help on this would be incredibly helpful. Thanks!

Did you try deleting (or renaming/moving, to be more cautious) the empty .ost file? Once it's not there, that may cause Outlook to regenerate it properly.
Is there anything listed in your "Add/remove programs" for Outlook 2013 or Office 365? I've been running Outlook 2013 (in its beta glory) for awhile, and I occasionally have issues which are fixed by doing a quick repair.
To do a quick repair:
Press Windows key + Q. Search for "remove programs" and change the search scope filter to "Settings".
Select "Change or remove a program".
I have "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 - en-us" as one of my programs. Click that (or something similar for Office 2013) and then click "Change".
Select "Quick Repair" and click "Repair".
Finally, if none of that works, here's how to find the Mail icon in the Control Panel:
Bring the mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen (where the Start button used to be) and right-click. Select "Control Panel".
In Control Panel in the upper right-hand corner, there is a "View by" dropdown menu. It may be set to "Category". Change it to "Large icons".
I now see a Mail icon. If it's not showing up for you, that probably means that Outlook wasn't configured properly and you do need to reinstall.
Hope this helps.

Word is not opening any files! Anyone know what this could be?

I'm trying to open word documents and get greeted with this now. Any idea what it can be? Restarting my pc did not help! it is a surface book 2
If you have a paid version of MS Office, try to remove it through the control panel, and delete all related files with it. After that, use a clean installation and use your key again in order to have your MS Office package working again.
If this not work for you, respond here and we will find another solution.

Microsoft Edge address bar no longer autofill

I have loved Edge and have convinced others to use it - until 2 days ago. Out of the blue I can no longer begin typing a web site in the address bar and have it autofill. I have to type every single character.
I went into settings and found one called "Show me suggestions from my typed characters" and "Show me suggestions from history" but both are greyed out and cannot be turned on! And they say "This setting is managed by your organization."
I have tried everything to fix this - including going back to the previous Windows.
I was going to actually uninstall Edge but found out I CANNOT DO THIS! This is crazy. Then - when going to uninstall Edge - I saw what might be the culprit (though I have no clue - I'm not an expert). On October 7 something called "Microsoft Edge Update" was added and probably part of a Windows update and is in my list of add/remove programs, which of course as I stated above, cannot be done. I will disable Edge and stop using it if I cannot get this fixed.
What's going on? And there were a few other weird glitches, like the most commonly used function for me is alt-tab and that was taking me weird places. Can you please help me?
Same thing happened to me at the same time. Just delete the keys besides the default one in the following registry path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
Just delete the keys besides the default one in the following registry path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
This worked for restoring the autocomplete function but my Edge still claims it's managed by an organization while it's installed on a home PC. I installed the insider beta just to install another version of Edge and it has the same issues.

Remove 'uploaded' add-in Word Online

I’m preparing some ‘tutorial’ videos and have probably a stupid question that I'm just overlooking the answer.
I’m following the steps on starter:
https://dev.office.com/getting-started/addins?product=word
with the option “Other Tools”
This all works fairly straight forward, ending with adding the generated AddIn to Word Online:
My question is though …. How do you get rid of the just added Show Taskpane again?
I can’t imagine it to be very hard, but I just don’t see the option anywhere in Word Online, to clean up again and remove the add-in to get a clean slate for the next video….
localStorage.clear();
sessionStorage.clear();
There is no UI for it unfortunately. You need to clear your local storage. Here is an example for IE, run it on the JavaScript console (F12 tools). Then reload the page with Ctrl + F5.
Just an update here. You can right click the add-in command and select Remove Add-in.
This capability is available for add-ins acquired from the in client Office Store or via App Source.
If an add-in is centrally deployed, in Outlook, you can configure add-ins so a user can right click and remove the add-in if they don't want it.
For people coming here from google:
If you tested your javascript add-ins locally you can remove those add-ins in MS Word by going File-Options-Trust Center-Trust Center Settings...-Trusted Add-In Catalogs and click 'Clear'.

Can't activate Visio 2013 MSDN

I have an MSDN subscription and I've installed Visio 2013. I am not able to activate the product and it has reduced to a read-only state.
Any attempts to activate or "Switch Account" are met with "Sorry, we are having some temporary server issues." I've found a few posts referencing removing an office-related key from the registry but this has not helped.
At one point I believe I'd also heard that our network might be blocking activation, but don't have a handle on how that would be coming into play exactly (if at all).
Have others encountered and (hopefully) found a fix to this issue?
Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Microsoft Visio Professional 2013
Right click on Microsoft Visio Professional 2013 and click on "Change"
Then select "Enter a Product Key" and supply your 25 digit licence key to activate.
Here is a little more detail on the Control Panel/Programs and Features method for entering product codes.
This worked with Office 2010 previously installed and then a later Visio 2013 Pro installation that didn't provide the activation dialog.
In Programs and Features
Right click Microsoft Visio Professional 2013
You'll see Uninstall (default) and Change. Select Change
You'll get a dialog with these options
Add or Remove Features
Repair
Remove
Enter a Product Key (voila!)
Select Product Key and the rest goes as expected.
Footnote: I spend 45 minutes in six conversations with four different Microsoft support teams trying to fix this. None knew how to address the issue.
I had the same problem. To activate I had to go to "Control Panel\Programs and Features\Microsoft Visio Professional 2013" and choose the "repair" option; you will be asked to insert your product key. Now my Visio is activated and I can create new diagrams, but I continue having problems using online options.
If your system is an offline computer, you will need to call the MS Support Center and give them your code which shows on your screen. Then in return enter the long string of digits they give you back.

Word opens extra blank document

I have an issue on a client machine that seems to be interferring with a word addin that ive built.
When any word document opens on the client machine, a second blank document opens also.
Ive seen this issue on a number of different machines but havent seen an explanation as to why.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour in word and have you managed to stop the second document opening?
Cheers
If this issue is happening regardless of whether or not your addin is installed, perhaps the user has a strange macro running in their default template file (normal.dot)?
You could try replacing normal.dot with a version from a machine which doesn't have the problem to see if that helps!?
If you are delivering your addin as a .dot, it is very easy to accidentally set it up to have a document in it that opens. This, of course, assumes that the problem follows the addin. If it does not follow the addin then you don't have a programming problem.
It happens to me in Windows Explorer when the preview pane is enabled on it.
If you double-click a word document then 2 instances of Word open, one of them is with empty document.
Disabling the preview pane eliminates the problem.
