I have a text file, it uses CRLF as line terminator.
when I check in the file, clearcase removes CR and leave LF only.
How to prevent such a behavior ?
I'm using clearcase on windows
On way ts to set a text mode file.
The other is to modify the global setting:
type clearhomebase
onglet Options
click on "User Preferences"
onglet View
Deselect the "Text Mode Option".

I have a text file where I would like to change all the Carriage Return to Line Feed. I am working on a Mac, and it seems like BBedit should be able to easily do this. However, in the search function it does not appear to differentiate between CR (\r) and LF (\n). Searching for either character gets the same hits, and a search for "\r" to replace with "\n" does not work.
Is there some other way to represent CR and LF, so that BBedit can differentiate between them?
A possibly simpler way to do this is to make sure you enable "Line Break Types" in BBedit's Preferences -> Appearance.
This will add a Line Types popup menu at the bottom of the window.
Not only does it show you what the current format is, but it makes it trivial to switch between them.
(I also turn on "Text Encoding" as well, in case I need to switch between UTF8 and UFT16 and others.)
For a single file:
Text -> Apply Text Transform
Select Change Line Endings
Click the Configure button and choose your desired line endings
For multiple files:
File -> New -> Text Factory
Select Change Line Endings
Click the Options button and choose your desired line endings
Save the Text Factory and apply it to the files you want changed through the Choose and Options buttons
Eclipse will place a light gray line on a column you choose when you select from Preferences > General > Editors > Text Editors and check the "Show print margin" checkbox.
If I add this line to my Checkstyle external file:
<setting id="org.eclipse.jdt.core.formatter.lineSplit" value="150"/>
then Format (Ctrl-Shift-F) will do a good job in splitting lines before column 150.
Is there a means, such as an XML file, in which I might set the value of the text editor "Show print margin"? I would like my department to have the formatter split lines at 150 (can do) and have all Eclipse IDEs show the gray line at column 150 (don't know how).
I have tried toggling the "Show print margin" checkbox and even checking "Show line numbers," but I cannot find a file that Eclipse altered, in either my Eclipse executable path or my project files that reflects this change. It must to be stored somewhere: these persists across Eclipse sessions.
If you change your settings via the Preference menu, you are changing the workspace settings. The files you are looking for are therefore located in the .metadata directory of your workspace. The specific file you are looking for is
.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.runtime/.settings/org.eclipse.ui.editors.prefs
This file can contain the following two lines:
printMarginColumn=120
printMargin=true
If printMarginColumn is not present, the default seems to be 80.
If you change the settings on a project, the file is the same but the location is in your project's .settings directory.
Need to keep EOL format consistent in all resources under Eclipse workspace.
I know about Eclipse preference that sets new line style for newly created files, but I would like to have automatic conversion for already existing files. Is there some settings/plugins?
I want just setup once and be sure that all line endings are in the same format.
In addition to the Window > Preferences > General > Workspace setting for new files that you already know about, there is a File > Convert Line Delimiters To option. I don't know of any existing plugin/tool that will do this automatically when you save, but you could certainly write one or make converting the line ending part of your process.
To make it easier on yourself, you can bind keyboard shortcuts to the conversion commands by going to Window > Preferences > General > Keys and filtering using "delimiter":
In Eclipse, to convert the line endings for existing files:
Go to the file browser view, and click on the project/folder/file that you wish to convert.
From the menu bar, select File > Convert Line Delimiters To > Windows / Unix / MacOS 9.
You can Search your resources with the Search-Dialog and go to the tab File Search. There you can enter a Regular expression. Enter \r\n or whatever line ending you want to change.
Then hit the Replace .. Button instead of Search.
I want just setup once and be sure that all line endings are in the same format.
... ok, my answer does not consider this.
You might get usefull results with Eclipse save actions: If the eclipse formatter also converts the EOL style, you could use it to modify EOL style only for the files you are modifying.
Unfortunately I don't have eclipse here, so I can't test if this actually works. Worth a try, however.
With BC2, when i click the Show differences... option in SourceGear Vault. It allow me to copy from the repository to the working version and save but I can't do this with BC3. It doesn't allow copying to the otherside (right) and have the editing disabled showing at the bottom of the BC3. It is even the same with DiffMerge. What am I not understanding here?
Can someone explain to me why the changes in BC3 and is there a workaround?
Beyond Compare will disable editing of a file for any of the following reasons:
It's one of the input files in a 3-way merge
The comparison was cancelled
The comparison encountered an error (corrupt file, invalid character encoding, out of memory, gamma rays, etc)
The file format's conversion settings don't support converting back to the original format (MS Word, PDF)
The file is on a read-only "filesystem" (7zip/RAR/CHM archives, CD/DVD-ROMs)
A file or parent folder had editing explicitly disabled by the user in the session settings or using the /ro command line switches
The viewer itself doesn't support editing (eg, Hex Compare prior to v4)
Also, the Full Edit (F2) toggle in the Text Compare View menu switches between inline editing and line-based mode. If it's disabled you can copy/delete whole lines and type in the line details edits at the bottom of the window, but the main windows won't have a cursor, typing is disabled, and it will always select whole lines. Unlike the above items, this doesn't show "Editing Disabled" in the status bar.
there must be a flag on the command line to call BC such as /ro# or /#ro or /(side)readonly (where side is left or right), it prevents editing.
these flags are there because differs are often called with temporary files to diff, in particular from SCC. and Vault probably has a single "external diff" command, thus you have to choose whether the flags are always there, it protects you from unexpectly editing a temporary file and loose this work when closing the diff tool, or not.
The few reasons I have found are:
If the encoding of the file is different than the default. In this case change the encoding to the expected one. (Japanese-ShiftJIS in my case)
If a refresh of files is in progress.
I just started to use NetBeans, and am trying to work out how to:
Make it so that trailing whitespace is removed on save. I know that you can invoke it manually, but it’s annoying if you forget. Can it be done automatically on save? I want this done because it keeps the code neat, because it’s really annoying when you’re moving through code and the text cursor goes all over the place because of trailing whitespace you don’t see, and because trailing whitespace has unintended effects on HTML layouts and other stuff.
Make it so that tabs are automatically made into 4 spaces while you’re typing rather than converting on save, or, worse, only when manually invoked.
For the first question, NetBeans 7.0+ has now a built-in solution. You can find it in:
On NetBeans 7:
Tools > Options > Editor > General > When saving files > Remove Trailing Whitespace: Never / Always / For Modified Lines Only
On NetBeans 8 / 9:
Tools > Options > Editor > On Save > Remove Trailing Whitespace From: None / All Lines / Modified Lines Only
[Original] For your first question, how to set NetBeans to remove trailing whitespace, the answer is that there is no setting (at the moment) to control that. It happens automatically, but not to every line. Whitespace is only removed from the lines you edit (or from the entire file if invoked manually). See Petr Pisl's blog entry titled "Removing trailing spaces" for a more complete explaination. (Note that even though he is blogging about NetBeans' PHP features, this particular feature applies to the basic editor shared by all NetBeans supported languages.)
[Update] This feature has been made available as of version 7.0, as pointed out by others in comments and answers below.
For your second question, set the editor to automatically make tabs into spaces as you type, you can find that setting in the Editor Formatting options:
Click on the Tools menu, and choose Options
Click on Editor in the top row of icons
Click on the Formatting tab
In the Language field, ensure that All Languages is selected
In the Category field, ensure that Tabs And Indents is selected
Check the box for Expand Tabs to Spaces
For each additional language that is available in the Language field, check that either Override Global Options is not checked, or that Expand Tabs to Spaces is also checked for that language.
Click OK
That will make sure that when you hit the tab key the specified number of spaces is inserted rather than a tab character. As above with whitespace removal, any existing tabs in the file are left as-is unless you invoke the manual command to change the entire file. (Moreover, even if you edit a line with tabs on it--leaving the tabs in place--the editor will not convert them to spaces. Only new instances of hitting the TAB key are controlled by this option.)
Tools > Options > Editor > On Save > Remove Trailing Whitespace From: None / All Lines / Modified Lines Only
This is as of Netbeans 7.3, according to Webmut.
For netbeans 7.4+
Windows - Tools > Options > Editor > On Save > Remove Trailing Whitespace From: None / All Lines / Modified Lines Only
Mac - Netbeans > preferences > Options > Editor > On Save > Remove Trailing Whitespace From: None / All Lines / Modified Lines Only
Also you can set this as language specific.
You can also set reformat while saving.
if you want to remove all trailing spaces in the file manually ONLY ONCE, you can invoke action 'Remove Trailing Spaces' from Source menu manually.
Source -> Remove Trailing Spaces
