Use iOS 5 Simulator in XCode 5? - ios5

It seems that XCode 5 only comes with the iOS 6 and 7 simulators. Is there a way to use the iOS 5 simulator with XCode 5?

If you're using Xcode 5 under OS X v10.8 then if you go to Preferences -> Downloads you should see the 5.0 and 5.1 simulators available under 'Components'. You can download and install directly from there.
If you're using Xcode 5 under OS X v10.9 then the iOS 5 simulator is no longer available.
In terms of lessons to learn, Apple did exactly the same thing with iOS 4 and the transition from OS X v10.7 to v10.8. So it's not unreasonable to expect that from now on Apple is going to supply simulators only for the version of iOS that was current when that OS X came out and the one before it.

Since Mavericks and Xcode 5.1, iOS5 Simulator is now gone :(
Seems Apple want us to focus on iOS7 and iOS6. (iOS5 now holds only < 1 to 5 % total on active AppStore devices)

While there is no 5.1 simulator under Mavericks, you still can connect up an old iPad1 to do your testing.

Additional Simulators can be installed from Xcode -> Preference -> Downloads -> Components
However, in case of Xcode 5.x iOS 5 simulator cannot be installed since Mavericks doesn’t allows it.
Apple document for Xcode 5 link

This doesn't technically answer your question, but that's how I do it in practice:
You can have Xcode 4 and 5 installed simultaneously on the system. Xcode4 does have support for iOS 5. You just need to download Xcode4 from the downloads page and rename the app before installing to the system (so that you don't copy it over Xcode 5).
Edit: this solution is not working anymore. Used to work but currently crashes for me.

If you still have the old version of XCode you can try giving a symbolic link as explained in this post : https://stackoverflow.com/a/18957939/2415693

I was able to run iOS 5.0 simulator using Xcode 5 on Lion. But after upgrade to Maverick it didn't work the same way it did on Lion. May be there is a way, but not the same as before...

I'm running Mavericks, but I have Mountain Lion as a virtual partition under Parallels Desktop. Under Xcode 5.0.2 downloads the iOS 5.0 and 5.1 simulators are showing up, and I've downloaded them, but sadly I can't seem to select them when running an app.
The 5.1 simulator as such runs fine if I select in manually, it's just that I can't seem to deploy apps on it from Xcode, even though I'm setting my deployment target to 5.1.1.
To satisfy my curiosity I've also got Mountain Lion running from an external hard disk (without the virtual machine) and I get the same results: no deploying apps from Xcode 5 to iOS 5.1.1

XCode 4.6.3 not detecting iphone device which has 7.0.2

The OS version of my phone is 7.0.2 (11A501). I am using XCode 4.6.3. The IDE Xcode is not detecting my iPhone. When i go to organizer it tells me the following
The version of iOS on “Joe iPhone” is not supported by this
installation of the iOS SDK. Please restore the device to a version of
the OS listed below, or update to the latest version of the iOS SDK;
which is available here.
However, i have read in various forums that if i download xCode 5 i will not be able to build for ios 5 or 6 applications. What should i do ? Help/
It sometimes suffices to copy the device support files from a newer Xcode version to an older one. Try copying
Xcode5.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/7.0 (11A465)
to your Xcode 4 installation, but name it "7.0.2 (11A501)"
There is a neat trick to install the app on and iOS 7 device with Xcode 4.6
First download from the developer center Xcode 5 and install it manually in a separate folder in your Applications folder (I did add it in an Xcode foler, inside Applications).
So now you have both Xcode 4.6 and Xcode 5 on your Mac.
Now, run your code on Xcode 5 and install it on your phone (press the debug button on your iOS device). Once this is done, you can quit Xcode 5, open Xcode 4.6 and it will be able to debug the app on your iOS7 device just fine!
You will be able to run iOS 6 apps easily from xCode 5 - no problem.
Updating xCode is only way to work with iOS 7 devices - you have no choice.
Yes, you have to update your xcode, or create an IPA and install it on your device with iOS 7.0.2 by iTunes.
First of all, definitely you have to install XCode5.
Initially you can build application only against IOS7, but you can manually add IOS6 SDK.
XCode SDK's are placed on this location:
/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/
You can copy IOS6 SDK from this location of XCode4.6 and paste it into same location in XCode5.
This way you can choose will you build your application against IOS6 or IOS7.
Run your code in Xcode5 the again run in Xcode4.6 will solve problem.
if you want to debug your Apps in xcode with ios 7 then, Updating xCode to version xcode 5 is only way to work with new ios (ios 7.0.2) and xcode 5 requirement is MAC os 10.8.4 , you have to update your OS ,if you right now using older version of operating system

Testing iOS 6 apps on device running iOS7

I have an iPhone 4s. I receive iOS 7 update in my phone. So the question is: can I run iOS 6 apps from Xcode on my iOS 7 device?
NOTE: I haven't got XCode 5, so that's the reason I would like to know about running iOS 6 apps from XCode 4.6.1 on an iPhone 4s with iOS 7.
This is what you need to do:
close all Xcode apps
run Xcode 5 and wait for the devices to be recognised
run Xcode 4.6.3 at the same time
close Xcode 5
source: http://gerrybeauregard.wordpress.com/2013/07/12/testing-xcode-4-ios-6-sdk-app-on-ios-7-device/
Without Xcode 5, all apps you build will be built as iOS 6 apps, and they will run on your device in iOS 6 mode even though your device is running iOS 7. You may want to keep Xcode 4 around for that very purpose, even though Xocde 5 is now in the App Store. I haven't been able to reliably get apps to run as iOS 6 apps when built in Xcode 5.
Yes, you can run iOS6 Apps from Xcode in your iOS7 device.
They will run in a compatibility mode which is suppose to be like running the app in a iOS6 device but in reality some stuff may not work as expected. I have experienced problems with rotations, UIAlerViews and other components from the SDK.
The mode in which apps run on iOS7 is determined by the Base SDK used to link the executable. If you link against the iOS 6 SDK (included with Xcode 4.6.3) your app will run under iOS 7 but look and behave like running under iOS 6.
In my case, i changed Build Settings -> Build Options -> Compiler for C/C++/Objective-C to Default compiler then it's resolved.
Yes you can Run Your IOS 6 app in to IOS 7 but Sometimes its Graphics not Display Correctly
or it Might be Crash in IOS 7 sometimes...
so Better you use Autolayout in your ios 6 app and run in your ios7 device..
I was unable to upgrade MacOS from 10.7.5 to 10.8.x and that is why I could not install Xcode5 on my MAC. I downloaded Xcode5 but due to incompatibility it can not be installed.
I was able to run app using XCode 4.6 in debug mode on an iPhone 4 with iOS 7 (and can't express enough how happy i got after that)
Steps:
Use incompatible Xcode5 (copy it from the dmg image to somewhere else, there will be a cross sign in it) and right click on it and Click "show package contents".
Go to Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs and copy the iPhoneOS7.0.sdk file in the corresponding folder in Xcode4.6 after showing its package contents.
Go to Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport and copy the 7.0 and 7.0.3(11B508) file in the corresponding folder in Xcode4.6 after showing package contents.
Now when you open Xcode4.6 your project Base SDK should be 7.0 and if your device is not detected yet, disconnect and reconnect your device so that it starts "getting symbol files from iPhoneXYZ"
Hope this helps someone.
One more important thing, in your scheme Debugger should be set to "LLDB"
To test iOS 6 apps on iOS device you need to have xcode 4 and xcode 5 on your development machine.
Step 1. Run Xcode 5 and run the project on the ios 7 device.
Step 2. Run Xcode 4 and now you will find the ios 7 device listed in the scheme menu of xcode 4.
Step 3. Run your project and enjoy.
if ([self respondsToSelector:#selector(edgesForExtendedLayout)])
self.edgesForExtendedLayout = UIRectEdgeNone;
// iOS 7(x)

Run a iOS App on version 4.3 on Mountain Lion

I'm using XCode's latest version on Mountain Lion and would like to test my Apps for iOS 4.3.
How can I adjust the simulator or install previous versions of XCode to test for iOS 4.3 in stead of testing for 5.1 only?
Within my XCode preference -> Downloads I'm not able to see the 4.3 simulator
EDIT:
I manually copied the folder of the iPhone 4.3 SDK from an old iMac which had an old XCode running to my working computer. Turned out that this fix only worked for device testing and not for testing in the simulator. So I needed to have an old device with iOS 4.3 installed, this eventually worked.
You need to install the 4.3 simulator.
Go to "Preferences" in Xcode and then the "Downloads" tab and you may see this:
I made this screenshot on my 10.7 machine but looking at the (supposedly) identical Xcode install on 10.8, I only see the 5.0 simulator as an installable option. It may be that you have to install the 5.0 simulator before the 4.3 one appears, or 4.3 is only supported on Lion.

Testing on jailbroken brand-new iOS device - using Xcode?

OK. So, here's some details on my situation :
I've got a brand-new iPhone 4.
The iOS version has been updated to 5.1.1 (9B206).
The phone has been jailbroken using redsn0w.
I'm running Lion (10.7.4) and Xcode 4.3.
Now, my issue :
I'm creating a sample test app, which runs fine under the simulator.
Followed everything here, but without any result.
Also tried enabling my device via Organizer ("Use as development device").
When I click on "Use as development device", it keeps saying...
The version of iOS on “Dr.Kameleon’s iPhone” does not match any of the
versions of iOS supported for development with this installation of
the iOS SDK. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed
below, or update to the latest version of the iOS SDK; which is
available here.
OS Installed on Dr.Kameleon’s iPhone
5.1.1 (9B206)
Xcode Supported iOS Versions Latest
5.0 (9A334)
4.3
4.2
While, when I try running on my "iOS device" (that's how it appears), it claims there's no device with a proper iOS version.
No provisioned iOS devices are available with a compatible iOS
version. Connect an iOS device with a recent enough version of iOS to
run your application or choose an iOS simulator as the destination.
Any ideas? What's going wrong?
Look, everyone who says you can't build directly on a jailbroken device is wrong. You can, and it's quite easy to do. If you don't have a provisioned device (and it looks like you don't), using this guide will work. I've tested it myself on Lion running Xcode 4.3 (it even works on later versions, but those are under NDA).
The real issue seems to be that, for whatever reason, you don't have the iOS 5.1 SDK - you're using the iOS 5.0 SDK. You can confirm this by looking in /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs and /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport. If you don't see any mention of 5.1, you don't have it installed. Try downloading and installing Xcode again (I believe it's 4.3.2 now), which should have the iOS 5.1 SDK bundled with it.
This error is not due to the jailbroken iPhone, its basically due to your lower version of Xcode which doesn't support the latest iOS, try upgrading your Xcode version to latest.hope it helps

Provisioning iPhone on Snow Leopard, XCode 4 and iOS5.1

I'm new to the whole iOS development thing but I have completed my first app and now wish to deploy to my iPhone for final testing round.
However, I have a yellow dot next to my device and the message tells me that iOS 5.1 is not supported and that I need to get the latest SDK's.
I have done that but still the error persists insisting that the highest iOS i can test is 5.0.
I'm not going to go back to 5.0 on my iPhone as that would just be stupid.
I have the latest updates for Snow Leopard, latest updates for xCode 4.
Anyone know what I need to do for me to be able to use my iPhone?
Xcode 4 max supported iOS is 5.0, as your phone is iOS 5.1 it is not possible to install your app directly with Xcode. You have two solutions:
1/ Either you install Xcode 4.3.2 (iOS 5.1), but you need to install Mac OS X Lion (10.7)
2/ Or create an adhoc version of your app (it is explained on Apple web site), and use this software to install your app on your phone : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1465?viewlocale=fr_FR&locale=fr_FR
