I'm working on small script that is interactive. I'm trying to start tmux both specifying the command (so that when the process exits the tmux session exits) and using a configuration file - but it doesn't appear that this is possible.
tmux new-session -d -s myapp 'python myapp.py' -f 'myapp-tmux.conf'
Any ideas?
You need to move the -f … to before new-session. It is an argument for tmux itself; the new-session (sub)command does not understand or accept -f.
Also, the configuration file (~/.tmux.conf, or the one specified with -f) is only used when initially starting a server. If you have other (possibly detached) sessions running under the default server, then the -f … portion of your command will go unused. Check for other sessions with tmux ls.
You might want to use -L (or -S) to specify an alternate server (i.e. one where you can make sure your session is always the only one):
tmux -L myapp -f myapp-tmux.conf new-session -d -s myapp 'python myapp.py'
Later, to attach to that session:
tmux -L myapp attach -t myapp
(You may leave off -t myapp if the sever only has that one session.)
If you do want to use you existing server (so that changes made via the configuration file can affect your other sessions), then you might want to use source instead:
tmux source myapp-tmux.conf \; new-session -d -s myapp 'python myapp.py'

I have the need to start a java rest server with concourse that lives on an Ubuntu 18.04 machine. The version of concourse my company uses is 5.5.11. The server code is written in Java, so a simple java -jar <uber.jar> suffices from the command line (see below). In production, I will not have this simple luxury, hence my question.
I have an scp command working that copies the .jar from concourse to the target Ubuntu machine:
scp -i /tmp/key.p8 -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null ./${NEW_DIR}/${ARTIFACT_NAME}.${ARTIFACT_FILE_TYPE} ${SRV_ACCOUNT_USER}#${JAVA_VM_HOST}:/var/www
Note that my private key is passed with -i and I can confirm that is working.

, but after trying a few permutations of the suggested solution and other answers, I still don't have my rest service kicked off.
I've tried a few permutations of this line in my concourse script:
ssh -f -i /tmp/pvt_key1.p8 -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null ${SRV_ACCOUNT_USER}#${JAVA_VM_HOST} "bash -c 'nohup java -jar /var/www/${ARTIFACT_NAME}.${ARTIFACT_FILE_TYPE} -c \"/opt/testcerts/clientkeystore\" -w \"password\" > /dev/null 2>&1 &'"
I've tried with and without the -f and -t switches in ssh, with and without the file stream redirection, with and without nohup and the Linux background ('&') command and various ways to escape the quotes.
At the bash prompt, this line successfully starts my server. The two switches are needed to point to the certificate and provide the password:
java -jar rest-service.jar -c "/opt/certificates/clientkeystore" -w "password"
I really think this is possible to do in Concourse, but I'm stuck at this point.
After a lot of trial an error, it seems I needed to do this:

The key was I was missing the 'sudo' portion of the command. Using nohup as opposed to putting in a Linux bash background indicator ('&') seems to give me an error in the pipeline. This works for me, but others are welcome to post responses with better answers or methods that might be a better practice.
I planed to starting emacs from the the start.sh as
$ head start.sh

emacs --daemon=coding

#invoke emacsclients
emacsclient -c -s "orging" &
emacsclient -c -s "coding" &
......
} &> /dev/null
Two clients run respectively under servers of orging and coding.
A problem occurred to this situation is that the invoked running clients are not labelled with appropriate server names.
So a manual steps of testing might be need to determine who is who.
As an alternative, the servers could be scheduled with one running at the top , the other at the end after starting from in the start.sh,
How could determine which server a client attached in a straightforward way on a working frame?
You can inspect the variable server-name - interactively with C-h v server-name RET.
I'm trying to create a service / script to automatically start and controll my nodejs server, but it doesnt seem to work at all.
First of all, I used this source as main reference http://kvz.io/blog/2009/12/15/run-nodejs-as-a-service-on-ubuntu-karmic/
After testing around, I minimzed the content of the actual file to avoid any kind of error, resulting in this (the bare minimum, but it doesnt work)

The file is saved in /etc/init/server.conf
when trying to start the script (as root, or normal user), I get:
root#iof304:/etc/init# start server
start: Job failed to start
Then, I tried to check my syntax with init-checkconf, resulting in:
$ init-checkconf /etc/init/server.conf
File /etc/init/server.conf: syntax ok
I tried different other things, like initctl reload-configuration with no result.
What can I do? How can I get this to work? It can't be that hard, right?
This is what our typical startup script looks like. As you can see we're running our node processes as user nodejs. We're also using the pre-start script to make sure all of the log file directories and .tmp directories are created with the right permissions.

As of Ubuntu 15, upstart is no longer being used, see systemd.
I started a Dancer/Starman server using:
sudo plackup -s Starman -p 5001 -E deployment --workers=10 -a mywebapp/bin/app.pl
but I'm unsure how I can stop the server. Can someone provide me with a quick way of stopping it and all the workers it has spawned?
Use the
--pid /path/to/the/pid.file
and you can kill the process based on his PID
So, using the above options, you can use
kill $(cat /path/to/the/pid.file)
the pid.file simply stores the master's PID - don't need analyze the ps output...
pkill -f starman
Kill processes based on name.
On Windows you can do "CTRL + C" like making a copy but Cancel in this case. Tested working.
For a while i have my db running on a command window because im not figuring out how to run it as a windows service.
Since i have the zip file version downloaded. how can i register the pg_ctl command as a windows service?
By the way, im using the following line to start the server:
"D:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/9.0.4/bin/pg_ctl.exe" -D "D:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/9.0.4/db_data" -l logfile start

Use the register parameter for the pg_ctl program.
The data directory should not be stored in Program Files, the location of %ProgramData% is e.g. a good choice.
pg_ctl.exe register -N PostgreSQL -U some_windows_username -P windows_password -D "%ProgramData%/db_data" ...
In newer versions of Postgres, a separate Windows account is no longer necessary, so the following is also sufficient
pg_ctl.exe register -N PostgreSQL -D "%ProgramData%/db_data" ...

You need to make sure the directory D:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/9.0.4/db_data has the correct privileges for the windows user you specify with the -U flag.
Btw: it is a bad idea to store program data in Program Files. You should move the data directory somewhere outside of Program Files because Program Files is usually highly restricted for regular users - with a very good reason.
Just run 'Command Prompt' as windows administrator and run the below command:
pg_ctl.exe register -N PostgreSQL -D "D:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/9.0.4/db_data"
You don't need to specify a User and Password, as previous answers have suggested.
