With some proxy servers there appears to be a problem with the HttpClient libraries used by Eclipse 4.4. The workaround is to use the JRE http client by putting this line in eclipse.ini:
-Dorg.eclipse.ecf.provider.filetransfer.excludeContributors=org.eclipse.ecf.provider.filetransfer.httpclient4
Eclipse bug discussion
Disabling Apache HttpClient

I tried every thing it did't work out for me..Finaly i found out that ,you have to allow eclipse from windows firewall(Windows 7).
->go to control panel>system and security>windows Firewall>Allow program or feature through windows firewall
->Then browse eclipse.exe
->Restart eclipse

1. GO TO
Window-> Preferences -> General -> Network Connection.
2. Change the Settings
Active Provider-> Manual-> and check---> HTTP, HTTPS and SOCS
Restart Eclipse and ENJOY!

On linux64, I had similar issues with luna, whereas Kepler connects fine.
I saw somewhere that you should clear SOCKS entry in Network connections and be in manual Active Provider.
Then restart Eclipse to apply changes.
It worked for me.

just add this line in your eclipse.ini
Dorg.eclipse.ecf.provider.filetransfer.excludeContributors=org.eclipse.ecf.provider.filetransfer.httpclient4
and restart eclipse!
if it persist , check the parameters of network connections in Tools > preferences > general > Network connections

I found a solution. I changed my Eclipse version. I use Eclipse Indigo now because all 4.x version not work on my computer. For reminder i use a Windows XP 32bits...a prehistorics machine.

Does anybody have a fix or workaround for this problem? My Eclipse oxygen with JBoss tools takes too long to load/startup. I have tried upgrading JBoss tools and then increased -Xmx in eclipse.ini but it still is slow to load. Looking at /workspace/.metadata/.log I found this:

It's trying to connect to redhat.ctrlflow.com. I tried browsing to this URL but it is unreachable. Removing JBoss tools is not an option. Hoping someone can shed some light on this matter. Thank you in advance.
AERI service has been shutdown so you may disable the error reporting but I'm not sure this is the source of slow startup
To fix, go to Windows > Preferences > General > Startup and Shutdown. Uncheck Eclipse Automated Error Reporting and any plugin that starts with JBoss Tools. Apply and Close. Restart and then the MESSAGE Server ‘org.jboss.tools’ failed with exception... and MESSAGE Server ‘org.eclipse.epp.logging.aeri.ide.server’ failed with exception... will no longer appear in /workspace/.metadata/.log.

Issue with Eclipse content assist is taking too long because of package time out

I am getting long delays with eclipse code content assist because a package that is included no longer exists. I have tried numerous things to no avail. Can anyone help with this issue or recommend how to delete the reference to the bad package.
the package is http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/R3.8.1/R-3.8.1-20160912100321/repository/content.xml

Thanks for bringing this up. In an older version of CodeMix, our requirement to the GSON plugin wasn't fully bound. This was fixed not too long after this question was asked. There have been many changes in CodeMix since the first technical preview builds with some exciting new functionality. If you haven't had a chance to do so, I suggest you updating and try again!
We're about to end our technical preview phase. Cheers!
delete [\your directory]\eclipse\plugins\com.genuitec.*.jar, then eclipse is live again
CodeMix install broke so badly I couldn't even quit Eclipse.
rm -fr $HOME/.codemix*
Removing $HOME/.codemix* did enough that when Eclipse process was killed (kill -9) I could start Eclipse, then remove CodeMix the normal way.

eclipse won't load workspace

I was working in eclipse, and it got stuck, and next it refused to load my usual workspace folder
this is what the logfile shows
how can i load this folder again?

I had the same problem.
Deleting .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.e4.workbench/workbench.xmi worked. I am not sure of the root cause, though.
OR
Move the contents of "plugins" folder to some other folder and restart eclipse. Eclipse will add all these plugins after restart. Replace the new folders with the copied folders.
Removing the .snap file worked for me:
rm WORKSPACE/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.snap
Just linking the solution provided by Fredrik in the thread: eclipse won't start but no error is shown
"It seems to fail when trying to restore the workspace.
Try:
Open a new workspace. If it has been set to use a default, go to \configuration.settings\org.eclipse.ui.ide.prefs and set SHOW_WORKSPACE_SELECTION_DIALOG to true
Try deleting /.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.snap
As suggested in a comment: If using Eclipse 4, you may have to delete the file .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.e4.workbench/workbench.xmi aswell."
