I have a calculate field Total Pts which is the sum of the values of report items
=ReportItems!Textbox28.Value + ReportItems!Textbox30.Value + ReportItems!Textbox32.Value
Now I want to put a interactive sort here and I am not able to do so . Any ideas? I can't do it in a query because the reportitems that I am adding are from a two different datasets which are of diff. types eg: sql server & sharepoint
There should be no issue with doing this because SSRS allows you to use an expression to determine the sort order. Just right click on your header textbox for the column and go to the interactive sort tab. Here you can turn interactive sort on, then in the sort by field click the function icon next to the drop down. Use the same expression that you used for your calculated field, and it will sort according to the results of this expression. If there is some reason you can't do this that I'm missing, let me know and I'll try to help.

I'm using Tableau Desktop 9.0 on OSX. I have data (loaded from a local CSV file) that looks like this:
code,org,items
0212000AA,142,10
0212000AA,143,15
0313000AA,142,90
0314000AA,143,85
I want a chart that shows the number of items beginning with 0212 as a percentage of all items, for each organisation. (I mean as a percentage of the organisation's items - for example, in the above, I would like to show 0.1 (10/(10+90)) for organisation 142.)
I have been able to get part way there, by adding org to Columns, and SUM(items) to Rows. Then by adding a Wildcard filter on code, for starts with 0212.
This shows me the number of items starting with 0212, by organisation.
But what I don't know how to do is show this divided by the value of all items for the organisation.
Is this possible in Tableau, or do I need to pre-calculate it before loading my data source?
One way is to define a calculated field called matches_code_prefix as:
left(code, 4) = "0212"
You can also define a parameter called, say, code_prefix to avoid hard coding the prefix string:
left(code, 4) = code_prefix
And then show the parameter control for code_prefix to allow the user to interact with it.
If you use this new field as a dimension to separate SUM(items) according to those that match the prefix and those that don't, you can then use a quick table calculation to get the percent of total.
For example, you can place org on the Rows shelf and matches_code_prefix on the Columns shelf, and SUM(items) on the Text shelf to make a table. Then under the analysis menu, turn on grand totals for both rows and columns to see the behavior. Next, right click on SUM(items) and choose Quick Table Calc->Percent of Total. Tableau will display the percents of total in the table.
If you want the percent of total defined differently than the default, then right click on the measure again and set Compute Using to a different value such as matches_code_prefix in your case. It's usually better to set compute using to a specific field.
If you only want to display the value for the matching case, select the column header you don't want to see and choose hide. You can also turn off the grand totals from the analysis menu when you are done.
When you are confident in the values in your table, you can turn it into a bar chart for example by moving matches_code_prefix to the detail shelf and the measure to the Columns shelf.

The above is the drag and drop approach. If you prefer to hard code everything in a single calculated field that is calculated on the database side, you could instead define a calculation such as:
zn(sum(if matches_code_prefix then items end)) / sum(items)
Then set the default number format for that field to display as a percentage
I've made a crosstab in crystal report like below:
However, as you can see, the ordering is weirld (i.e. the correct one should be like below:)
And the ordering is stored in another field called order, I took a look in the crystal report's cross-tab expert sorting option, it doesn't allow me to order by another column, it only allows me to sort either ascending or descending, how can I set the ordering by another column?
Crosstab's sorting is based on the rows order, if you want to sort it in your on you have to add some extra rows and have to suppress subtotal and Label in Customize Style of Crosstab Expert
Example:
If you have 3 rows(A,B,C) to display and you have to sort it in order like B,C,A then you have to add 2 new rows(B,C) now your Crosstab looks like (B,C,A,B,C) now you have to suppress Rows B and C you meet your both requirements for sorting and display order
But This solution have some limitations like
if you want to export the report in Excel then it will add extra cells in grand total.
otherwise you are good to go.

If you have 3 rows(A,B,C) to display and you added one row and you suppress it to solve your sorting issue then in Excel its grand total looks like

Yes, you can not sort on another column. You must use any of one column as a header.
In Crystal report, sorting happened based on header column's value (That's why you see as per alphabetic).
I also face this issue and how I solved, that I am explain. You have to use a formula which have order, but either hide it or use a value like in this link.

open crosstab expert, highlight the column that you want to reorder, go to Group Options and select in specified order. This will open another tab where you will have your available values listed there. Using the arrows on the right side you can move up or down your values and accommodate them in the order you want them to be displayed.
Simple way would be take order column from stored procedure to cross tab and set the order according to that column.
Then supress the order column and reduce the width of that column to minimum pixel so that it doesn't appear in cross tab.
Make the field you want to sort by a group field and hide it. To hide it, in the Crosstab Expert > Customize Style dialog select this group then use the Group Options area to Suppress Subtotal and Supress Label. Worked for me.
Use the order field as the grouping column and change the label for said column to show the actual sizes. The labels can be changed in Crosstab Expert, Grouping Options and then the tab Options.
I'm designing a report on Ireport with a SQL query, and I'm working with filters, basically I want to be able to compare a input parameter "shift" with a field in my report, so I can show my report by shift.
This part of the report works fine, I just used a filtering expression $F{Shift}.equals( $P{shift} ), however this only works with one shift, but I want to also be able to see all shifts in the same report. Is there a way to do this?
As #Pu297 suggested, I could use an IN comparation in my SQL query, but setting it like this:
SELECT * FROM foo WHERE shift IN P!{shift}
Where my shift ireport parameter is a String and I type it in the way "1,2,3" to show the first 3 shifts

What I suggest, rather than doing this task in crystal report, good to done at sqlserver side means database side.
This is simplest suggestion when you have this type of situation.
You can give the condition on sqlserver side too. and get the data order same as you want.

Don't use formula as group sort order instead from the dropdown use Specifed Order and in the window specify the order you need
I am trying to perform an aggregation on a calculated Field in SSRS and am getting the following error:
[rsAggregateReportItemInBody] The Value expression for the textrun 'Textbox43.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]' uses an aggregate function on a report item. Aggregate functions can be used only on report items contained in page headers and footers
This is the formula I tried to use:
=Sum(ReportItems!PlanPurchPrice.Value, "Select_UCPUtilization")
In this Case PlanPurcPrice is also an Expression:
=First(Fields!PawPlanPurchPrice.Value, "Select_UCPUtilization")
Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.
SSRS 2008 does not support the functionality you are looking for unless the report item is located in the header or footer (as is stated in the error message). I would, instead, propose two alternate solutions:
First Option
Place the calculation in your query (if possible) at which point you can then reference the field and the aggregate will work as desired.
Second Option
You essentially want to create the aggregate you're looking to return elsewhere in the report where it is directly connected to the Select_UCPUtilization scope, then reference the aggregated value elsewhere. Follow these steps:
Within the same scope as report item PlanPurchPrice, calculate a sum of the PlanPurchPrice. Name the textbox containing the aggregate something meaningful (e.g., Sum_PlanPurchPrice).
Reference that textbox directly wherever you were trying to use the ReportItems sum before (i.e., =ReportItems!Sum_PlanPurchPrice.Value)
Hide the workaround. Place the aggregate you created in an additional column or row attached to the Select_UCPUtilization scope. Turn the text white, turn off growth and shrinkage, and make the row very tiny (a pixel or two high).
Using the second option, the report item does exist (and is visible, which is important) on the report and contains the sum you are looking to return elsewhere.
