Coffeescript binding? - coffeescript

I just finished reading The Little Book on Coffeescript, and I'm trying to get my head around the language. I'm trying to figure out how to do quite a plain vanilla bind. Here's my code:
times = (a = 1, b = 2) -> a*b
h = alert.bind times 8, 9
h
This doesn't produce any errors but it also doesn't run any alerts. What am I doing wrong?

You're not invoking the function h. You need to call h().
This code doesn't make sense. Line 2 transpiles to var h = alert.bind(times(8, 9)) meaning you are trying to create a version of alert where this is 72. ??? You can't do that.
Per 2, this throws an error, Uncaught TypeError: Illegal invocation.

A helpful tool for understanding coffeescript is JS2Coffee, which will translate code back and forth between Coffeescript and JavaScript. Then you can see whether what you've written is what you thought you wrote.
Your code here has two issues:
bind takes a context (which it will use as its this) as its first argument. Subsequent arguments will form the arguments list of the bound function when the new function is invoked.

How are methods evaluated in Scala?

Method types have no value. How do we evaluate a method?
Using SML as an example, I have
fun myFunc(x) = x + 5
val b = myFunc(2)
In the second expression, myFun has a type and a value, we use its type to do type checking and use its value together with its argument to evaluate value for b
But in Scala methods without a value how do we evaluate? I am pretty new to Scala so it may not be very clear.
def myFunc(x) = x + 5
val b = myFunc(2)
From val b = myFunc(2) to val b = 2 + 5, what happened in between? From where or what object do we know that myFunc(x) is x + 5?

The simple answer is: just because a method is not a value in the sense of "a thing that can be manipulated by you" doesn't mean that it is not a value in the sense of "a thing that can be manipulated by the author of the compiler".
Of course, a method will have an object representing it inside of the compiler. In fact, that object will probably look very similar to the object representing a function inside, say, the MLTon SML compiler or SML/NJ.
In SML, syntax is not a value, but you are not questioning how it is possible to write a function call either, aren't you? After all, in order to call a function in SML, I need to write a function call using function call syntax, so how can I do that when syntax is not a value?
Well, the answer is the same: just because syntax is not a value that the programmer can manipulate, the compiler (or more precisely the parser) obviously does know about syntax.
I can't tell you why the decision was made to have functions be values in Scala but not methods, but I can make a guess. Scala is an object-oriented language. In an object-oriented language, every value is an object, and every object has methods that are bound to that object. So, if methods are objects, they need to have methods, which are objects, which have methods, which are objects, and so on.
There are ways to deal with this, of course, but it makes the language more complex. For a similar reason, classes aren't objects (unlike, say, in Smalltalk, Python, and Ruby). Note that even in highly reflective, introspective, dynamic languages like Ruby, methods are not objects. Classes are, but not methods.
It is possible using reflection to get a proxy object that represents a method, but that object is not the method itself. And you can actually do the same in Scala as well.
And of course it is possible to turn a method into a function value by η-expansion.
I'm assuming that you're compiling to Java Virtual Machine (JVM) bytecode, such as with scalac, which is probably the most common way to use Scala. Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on the JVM, so some parts of this answer might be a bit wrong, but the general idea is right.
Essentially, a method is a set of instructions for the runtime to execute. It exists as part of the compiled code on disk (e.g. a .class file). When the JVM loads the class, it pulls the entire class file into memory, including the methods. When the JVM encounters a method call, it looks up the method and starts executing the instructions in it. If the method returns a result, the JVM makes that result available in the calling code, then does whatever you wanted to do with it there, such as assigning to a variable.
With that knowledge, we can answer some of your questions:
From val b = myFunc(2) to val b = 2 + 5, what happened in between?
This isn't quite how it works, as the JVM doesn't "expand" myFunc in place, but instead looks up myFunc and executes the instructions in it.
From where or what object do we know that myFunc(x) is x + 5?
Not from any object. While myFunc is in memory, it's in an area of memory that you can't access directly (but the JVM can).
why can't it be a value since it is a chunk of memory?
Not all memory fits into the nice abstractions of types and values.

How to safely manipulate MATLAB anonymous functions in string form

I have an anonymous function that I would like to manipulate in string form then use with fsolve.
When I do this the references in the anonymous function to constants are lost and fsolve fails.
The problem is easily illustrated.
The following works:
A=3;
myfun=#(x)sin(A*x);
x = fsolve(#(x)myfun(x),[1 4],optimoptions('fsolve','Display','off'))
The following throws an error as explained here:

Is there some way I CAN safely manipulate an anonymous function while retaining references to constant parameters?

Specifically I'm writing a simple wrapper to allow fsolve to accept imaginary numbers for simple cases. The following illustrates a working example without a constant parameter:

As in the failed example above if I include a parameter in my wrapper the process fails with the same error as above.
I originally suggested to use the symbolic math toolbox, but reading your question again I realized it's just a simple substitution of input parameters. You can achieve this using function handles without any string processing.

As much as I hate to suggest using the eval function, you could do:
myfun2 = eval(mystring);
Using eval is kinda frowned upon because it makes code hard to analyze (since arbitrary nastiness could be going on in that string), but don't let other people's coding style stop you from doing what works :)
In your longer example, this would correspond to changing the line:
fc=str2func(f3);
to:
fc=eval(f3);
Again, the use of eval is strongly discouraged, so you should consider alternatives to this type of string manipulation of function definitions.

How can I 'unparse' a parse tree in q/kdb+?

I am trying to create an automatic 'debugger' for tracing function flow. Because I'm not a god, I do make mistakes, and when I do, I normally end up throwing a bunch of "show" in my functions. What I'm looking to do is create a function that will insert shows prior to each line for each variable used in an expression on that line and any variable assigned to in the previous.
Imagine I have a function f that is throwing an unhelpful error. I would insert
f: debugwrap[f];
after the function definition to insert the appropriate debugging within the lines of function string, parse, and return the augmented function.
I have had success handling the params and simple functions, but where I have trouble is where semicolons do not indicate eol, such as in function calls. Using parse on the function body, I can easily break out all the lines and find the required variables, but once I do that, I need to 'unparse' each line in the function. That unparsing is giving me trouble, especially where functions are translated to what I believe is k - such as "*:".
Simple example with only initial logging:

What I'm doing now is recursively walking through the parse tree and reconstructing the call. That is painful and not yet yielding results. What I think is the best way is to get the information I need out of each parse subtree, then unparse that subtree and append it to my function string.

MATLAB Beginner recursive functions

Just having a little difficulty with the syntax of matlab functions;
function f = fact(x)
if x == 1
return
else
f = 1 - x*(fact(x-1))
end
end
When calling this function in the command window with the argument 10 I receive the error
Undefined function 'fact' for input arguments of type 'double'.
Error in recursion (line 6)
f = 1 - x*(fact(x-1))
I've had a look around and solutions for the first revolve around the pathing of the m-file which doesn't seem to be a problem as other files in the same directory run fine,
The second I'm not sure why the error in line 6 occurs, my guess is it has something to do with the variable and function names.
As a side question, are both these end statements necessary?

The most obvious error is your function filename. You have a function called fact defined in your code but you named your file recursion. Make sure that both your function name and the filename are both called fact.
If you were to name your file as recursion, then make the function name defined in your code as fact, this is what would happen if you tried calling your code:
>> f = recursion(10);
Undefined function 'fact' for input arguments of type 'double'.

As such make sure your filename and your function name are named the same. In fact, in the MATLAB editor, it should automatically give you an error saying that both of these are not the same.
There is also another error in your code. The base case is not defined properly. Always remember when you are writing recursive algorithms is that eventually the function is going to return... and that's when you hit the base case. We can see here that it is when x = 1. When x = 1, you're supposed to assign something to f which is the output. You are simply exiting the function, and so when x becomes 1, your code will spit out an error saying that f was not assigned when the function finishes. As such, you need to figure out what your base case is. I'm going to assume that your base case (when x = 1) is going to equal 0. You will obviously need to change this as I don't know what your code is actually computing. Basically, you need to do this:

if x == 1
f = 0; %// Base case needs to change according to your specs
else
f = 1 - x*(fact(x-1))
end
end
When I do this, I get the following output when x = 10
>> f = fact(10);
f =
1334961
I don't get an error when I run this code now. Also, check to see if you have any variables named fact in your workspace. When this happens, you are in fact shadowing over your function with a variable, so it is actually trying to access the variable called fact instead. As such, try clearing your workspace by doing clear all;, then try this code again.
One warning
If you were to specify x to be 0 or negative, this function will never stop. As such, you need to provide some check and perform the proper action when this happens. Also, you need to make sure that you specify what type of inputs are accepted for x. Judging from the context, x are positive integers only. As what #Glen_b has noted, should you provide any number that isn't a positive integer, this function will never stop as x will never equal 1 down the recursion pipeline.
To answer your optional question
The first end statement is required to end the if statement. The second end statement isn't required, but it's good practice anyway. However, if you have multiple functions defined inside your function file, then yes it is most definitely required to properly signify that the end of that function is defined there. However, you don't need it if you're only writing one function per file, but I would recommend keeping it there as it's good practice.

Using LuaJ with Scala

I am attempting to use LuaJ with Scala. Most things work (actually all things work if you do them correctly!) but the simple task of setting object values has become incredibly complicated thanks to Scala's setter implementation.
Scala:
class TestObject {
var x: Int = 0
}
Lua:
function myTestFunction(testObject)
testObject.x = 3
end
If I execute the script or line containing this Lua function and pass a coerced instance of TestObject to myTestFunction this causes an error in LuaJ. LuaJ is trying to direct-write the value, and Scala requires you to go through the implicitly-defined setter (with the horrible name x_=, which is not valid Lua so even attempting to call that as a function makes your Lua not parse).
As I said, there are workarounds for this, such as defining your own setter or using the #BeanProperty markup. They just make code that should be easy to write much more complicated:
Lua:
function myTestFunction(testObject)
testObject.setX(testObject, 3)
end
Does anybody know of a way to get luaj to implicitly call the setter for such assignments? Or where I might look in the luaj source code to perhaps implement such a thing?

I must admit that I'm not too familiar with LuaJ, but the first thing that comes to my mind regarding your issue is to wrap the objects within proxy tables to ease interaction with the API. Depending upon what sort of needs you have, this solution may or may not be the best, but it could be a good temporary fix.

I believe this may be the least invasive way to solve your problem. As for modifying LuaJ's source code to better suit your needs, I had a quick look through the documentation and source code and found this, this, and this. My best guess says that line 71 of JavaInstance.java is where you'll find what you need to change, if Scala requires a different way of setting values.

Perhaps you should use the method syntax:
testObject:setX(3)
Note the colon ':' instead of the dot '.' which can be hard to distinguish in some editors.
This has the same effect as the function call:
testObject.setX(testObject, 3)
but is more readable.
It can also be used to call static methods on classes:
luajava.bindClass("java.net.InetAddress"):getLocalHost():getHostName()
The part to the left of the ':' is evaluated once, so a statement such as
x = abc[d+e+f]:foo()
will be evaluated as if it were
