Generate distinct values from a column in a spark dataframe - scala

I have a spark dataframe like below
id|name|age|sub
1 |ravi|21 |[M,J,J,K]
I don't want to explode on the column "sub" as it will create another extra set of rows. I want generate unique values from the "sub" column and assign it to new column sub_unique.
My output should be like
id|name|age|sub_unique
1 |ravi|21 |[M,J,K]

You can use udf
val distinct = udf((x: Seq[String]) => if (s != null) x.distinct else Seq[String]())
df.withColumn("subm_unique", distinct($"sub"))

How to get column values from list which contains column names in spark scala dataframe

I have a config defined which contains a list of column for each table to be used as a dedup key
for ex:
config 1 :
val lst = List(section_xid, learner_xid)
these are the column that needs to be used as a dedup keys. This list is dynamic some table will have 1 value some will have 2 or 3 values in it
what I am trying to do is build a single key column from this list
df.
.withColumn( "dedup_key_sk", uuid(md5(concat($"lst(0)",$"lst(1)"))) )
how do I make this dynamic which will work for any number of columns in list .
I tried doing this
df.withColumn("dedup_key_sk", concat(Seq($"col1", $"col2"):_*))
For this to work I had to convert list to Df and each value in list needs to be in separate columns I was not able to figure that out.
tried doing this but didn't work
val res = sc.parallelize(List((lst))).toDF
ANy input here will be appreciated . Thank you
The list of strings can be mapped to a list of columns (using functions.col). This list of columns can then be used with concat:
val lst: List[String] = List("section_xid", "learner_xid")
df.withColumn("dedup_key_sk", concat(lst.map(col):_*)).show()

How to retrieve column value by passing another column value with IN clause in spark

I have a scenario that to read a column from DataFrame by using another column from same DataFrame through where condition and this value pass through as IN condition to select same value from another DataFrame and how can I achieve in spark DataFrame.
In SQL it will be like:
select distinct(A.date) from table A where A.key in (select B.key from table B where cond='D');
I tried like below:
val Bkey: DataFrame = b_df.filter(col("cond")==="D").select(col("key"))
I have table A data in a_df DataFrame and table B data in b_df DataFrame. How can I pass variable Bkey value to outer query and achieve in Spark?
You can do a semi join:
val result = a_df.join(b_df.filter(col("cond")==="D"), Seq("key"), "left_semi").select("date").distinct()

How can create a new DataFrame from a list?

Hello guys i have this function that gets the row Values from a DataFrame, converts them into a list and the makes a Dataframe from it.
//Gets the row content from the "content column"
val dfList = df.select("content").rdd.map(r => r(0).toString).collect.toList
val dataSet = sparkSession.createDataset(dfList)
//Makes a new DataFrame
sparkSession.read.json(dataSet)
What i need to do to make a list with other column values so i can have another DataFrame with the other columns values
val dfList = df.select("content","collection", "h").rdd.map(r => {
println("******ROW********")
println(r(0).toString)
println(r(1).toString)
println(r(2).toString) //These have the row values from the other
//columns in the select
}).collect.toList
thanks
Approach doesn't look right, you don't need to collect dataframe to just add new columns. Try adding columns to directly to dataframe using withColumn() withColumnRenamed() https://docs.azuredatabricks.net/spark/1.6/sparkr/functions/withColumn.html.
If you want to bring columns from another dataframe try joining. In any case it's not good idea to use collect as it will bring all your data to driver.

Iterate across columns in spark dataframe and calculate min max value

I want to iterate across the columns of dataframe in my Spark program and calculate min and max value.
I'm new to Spark and scala and not able to iterate over the columns once I fetch it in a dataframe.
I have tried running the below code but it needs column number to be passed to it, question is how do I fetch it from dataframe and pass it dynamically and store the result in a collection.
val parquetRDD = spark.read.parquet("filename.parquet")
parquetRDD.collect.foreach ({ i => parquetRDD_subset.agg(max(parquetRDD(parquetRDD.columns(2))), min(parquetRDD(parquetRDD.columns(2)))).show()})
Appreciate any help on this.
You should not be iterating on rows or records. You should be using aggregation function
import org.apache.spark.sql.functions._
val df = spark.read.parquet("filename.parquet")
val aggCol = col(df.columns(2))
df.agg(min(aggCol), max(aggCol)).show()
First when you do spark.read.parquet you are reading a dataframe.
Next we define the column we want to work on using the col function. The col function translate a column name to a column. You could instead use df("name") where name is the name of the column.
The agg function takes aggregation columns so min and max are aggregation functions which take a column and return a column with an aggregated value.
Update
According to the comments, the goal is to have min and max for all columns. You can therefore do this:
val minColumns = df.columns.map(name => min(col(name)))
val maxColumns = df.columns.map(name => max(col(name)))
val allMinMax = minColumns ++ maxColumns
df.agg(allMinMax.head, allMinMax.tail: _*).show()
You can also simply do:
df.describe().show()
which gives you statistics on all columns including min, max, avg, count and stddev

How to insert record into a dataframe in spark

I have a dataframe (df1) which has 50 columns, the first one is a cust_id and the rest are features. I also have another dataframe (df2) which contains only cust_id. I'd like to add one records per customer in df2 to df1 with all the features as 0. But as the two dataframe have two different schema, I cannot do a union. What is the best way to do that?
I use a full outer join but it generates two cust_id columns and I need one. I should somehow merge these two cust_id columns but don't know how.
You can try to achieve something like that by doing a full outer join like the following:
val result = df1.join(df2, Seq("cust_id"), "full_outer")
However, the features are going to be null instead of 0. If you really need them to be zero, one way to do it would be:
val features = df1.columns.toSet - "cust_id" // Remove "cust_id" column
val newDF = features.foldLeft(df2)(
(df, colName) => df.withColumn(colName, lit(0))
)
df1.unionAll(newDF)
