Mirror Eclipse workspaces in W10/Linux-Mint Dual-boot - eclipse

I have found out that Eclipse workspaces contain configuration information in addition to project code and compiler products, and that is why I cannot share them between OS's. I don't want to get fancy (Version control systems) because it's just me using them on one machine.
Is it possible to symbolic-link each source file from the Windows workspace to the Linux workspace? Has anyone done this and created a script already? I would probably write it run each time Linux logs in. Any problems in doing this that I don't see?

Eclipse not recognising express/node

I have been using Linux for less than 24 hours, so please, if there is anymore information I should provide, do be quite specific about how to get that information.
I've been trying to install Node.js, express.js and eclipse. As you can see, ubuntu does recognise both node.js and express as installed on my system (I think!) and I got the Nodeclipse-extension for eclipse, but still Eclipse doesn't seem to recognise either node.js or express (see my image below). I also want to add that the time occurrence of the error, I was trying to build a Node.js Express Project.
At this point, how do I go about debugging the situation? The folder location shown in the image does not fully exist. I can only go as far as [...]/bin/ - I have been looking at error messages similar to mine, and it seems like people are getting such errors because they're lacking an installation, however, from my screenshot provided, I would think everything is installed as needed.
I am using a native 64-bit windows laptop with Linux (Ubuntu) installed through a virtualbox. Ubuntu is 14.04 LTS and just 32-bit, as I don't have spare 2 gb ram to give the 64-bit version. Sadness.

I found a solution, which worked for me:
WINDOWS:
I did double installations of the needed modules. They were both located in C:/Users/X/AppData/Roaming, in the Eclipse directories and finally in C:/Program Files/nodejs. When I deleted all the node_modules, besides critical ones for nodejs to function and then ran Eclipse with Nodeclipse, it seemed to function and Eclipse automaticly defined folders in its own subdirectory, in which Express were located.
UBUNTU:
Delete all node_modules files and run Eclipse with Nodeclipse. See the windows explanation for a more detailed overview. Same problem and solution seemed to be present for both systems. Do note that the file directories are of course not completely interchangeable. You'll need to locate your instances of node_module.

Run Eclipse EPIC Perl Plugin on Remote Project/Files

I recently started a new job, where all development is done on a remote dev server. I really like Eclipse as a centralized development environment for all the different stuff I'm working on, and am not a particularly big fan of emacs or vi. I'll use emacs if I have to change something quickly, but after really trying to like it for normal development, I'm really starting to miss Eclipse.
That said, is there any way I can use Eclipse with EPIC for Perl development on a remote server? I can live without debugging functionality, but proper syntax highlighting, and the ability to create projects would be really, really nice. So far, I've tried using a remote browser plugin for Eclipse to peruse the remote dev server and open stuff into Eclipse that way, but it is far from ideal. Anyone have any better ideas?
Answering my own question (which no one seems to have looked at or care about, but what the hell-- maybe someone will have the same issue):
Grab Remote Systems Explorer from here.
Setup RSE to ssh into your remote server.
Create a new empty EPIC project (or using whatever plugin/ language you want).
Right click the project, select "New Folder," then
Advanced >> Link to alternate location (Linked Folder)
Switch file system to RSE, then just browse to some folder on your remote system you'd like to become a project, and add it.
That's it, you're done. Now when you open your project in Eclipse, you'll see that folder with all the code you wanted, and you can use it just like you would locally.
The main problem I'm seeing with this right now is that currently I can't get it to do any error checking, which is too bad. I'll work on finding a work around for that and update here if I do.
If you're on linux, you can also mount the remote drive/folder with sshfs and use the same "linked folder technique". I do this all the time for Java EE development. sshfs is also very reliable, unlike Windows network shares mounted on linux with Samba-Client. (Sometimes the Windows sharing service gets confused. And needs to be restarted on the remote server. I use a powershell one liner for this "restart-service -name 'sharing service' " or something likeĀ“that.)

Netbeans: Remote project w/source files over SSH?

Is it possible to set up a remote NetBeans C++ project where the source files are only accessible via SSH?
My project needs to build on a Linux box, but I'd like to develop it on a Windows machine.
Checking out the code via SVN to my Windows machine is not an option since there are a few files that differ only by case, and NTFS is not case sensitive (unfortunately, I can not change them).
I'm well aware that Windows can be kind-of forced be case-aware and the ideal solution is to just re-name those file to something sane.
However, I'm just trying to solve this using NetBeans. Since it's a remote project anyway, why bother to keep any files locally.

Currently, no. In general programming files with different cases of the same name is a bad practice.
You can enable case sensitivity in Windows - you may need to have a Professional version or better.

Another solution would be to setup VNC/RDP on the remote Unix system. The overall solution should be to conform to a better file naming convention:
Programmer 1: "Hey man, take a look at noCamelCase.cs - I just rewrote it."
Programmer 2: "Um, nocamelcase.cs is blank."
There are two ways of doing remote builds with Netbeans. The first, the project is stored locally. You just create a regular project and on the 2nd page of the wizard you specify the network directory with the source and the remote build host. I've used this for Solaris client to Linux server, but not from Windows as we don't have the mounts exported by SMB. This uses ssh and some shared lib interposers to get the build info.
The second way is to create a remote project. In this case the project is created on the remote host and date is copied on demand to the client. I've only doe a few tests with this as I preferred the first method as it had much better latency.
Lastly, you could either use vnc or install X on your windows machine and do everything on the Linux machine.

Shared configuration for Eclipse on Debian server

I've manually installed the latest Eclipse on our debian server and wanted to configure it so all users share the same configuration. It turned out less obvious than I thought: I don't seem to be able to install packages for all users. If I run it myself, all configuration data is saved under my own home directory. If I run Eclipse using sudo, everything is saved under the root directory but is not accessible for other users when they run Eclipse.
I've been browsing the manual of Eclipse and some forums, but apart from a "yes, you can" I couldn't find any information on how that should be done. The biggest problem is installing plugins for all users to be found. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Eclipse : 3.6.1 classic, installed using this procedure.
Server uname: GNU/Linux *** 2.6.26-2-amd64
Server is accessed using Putty, and Gnome desktop through realVNC. Just mentioning it if that is of any importance. Our sysadmin is on "prolonged leave" (working in Spain and never replaced), so I'm stuck without help here.

I've found a list of variables that could be set in the launcher.ini or config.ini regarding configuration : osgi.configuration.area, osgi.configuration.area.default, osgi.sharedConfiguration.area, osgi.configuration.cascaded, ... But I can't figure out exaclty how to set these correctly.

For plugins, you could add in eclipse.ini (for all Eclispe you install) a common path for "shared dropins directory".
All plugins copied in that directory will be detected when Eclipse is launched.

Free RCS for Windows 7

I've been using RCS (revision control system) from MKS Source Integrity for several old projects. I have to move to a new Windows 7 computer. The old version I have does not install on Windows 7, and a new version of the software is very expensive.
What is the best free or cheep source of RCS for Windows 7? Also, will it be compatible with MKS Toolkit which I am still going to install?
The official website for RCS has Windows 32-bit binaries, but they are dated. YMMV. http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/trinkle/RCS/.
Edit: I just tried the binaries (from the first zip file). They seem to work on a trivial text file.
I put them in a directory. Then I created an "RCS" directory. Then I created a text file. Then I ran "set TZ=EST" in my cmd.exe window (the tools require a timezone). Then I was able to check the text file in and out with the RCS command line tools.
Note that large files are probably not supported given the date of the binaries.
If you want the binaries to be available system wide, you have to place them in a location on your Windows PATH and set the TZ environmental variable to the zone you need in your account's environment.
RCS offers reverse merge which can be useful when you want to apply selected fixes for ECO version of your software without addition on less tested product enhancements. I was able to produce ECO version of real-time control system with several hundred fixes without the assistance of software engineers working on the next release of the product. ClearCase did not offer similar capability at the time.
We used rcs and gmake. Build scripts were written in Perl. Each ran on native Windows. I wish the idiots at the software company in Washington would use / instead of \ for file separator.
On Windows 7 64-bit SETUP32.EXE fails "not compatible with the version of Windows you're running"
My workaround:
Copy sintcm32.dll from a 32-bit machine into c:\windows\syswow64.
In Explorer, double-click a .pj file, set description to "MKS Source Integrity Project/Sandbox File" and target to "[network location]\mkssi\mkssi32.exe"
Create start menu shortcuts to "[network location]\mkssi\mkssi32.exe" etc.
Git (MSysGit) works on Windows 7 and is free. There is a learning curve associated with Git, which I think is worth it (for the benefits you get, especially regarding a distributed VCS), but some may disagree. This bundles come with bash and an ssh client (useful synchronization with remote repositories).
EDIT: For RCS specifically, there is an RCS package via Cygwin or an independent package from the Purdue RCS Homepage (the latter says "The latest PC (OS/2 DOS Win95 NT)", but I guess it might work on Windows 7, I'm fairly sure the Cygwin package works on Win 7).
