MongoDB/Mongoose - "unset" when empty or false-y - mongodb

Does anyone know of a good way (either natively in MongoDB or through Mongoose) to "unset" a document property when it's empty?
Use case: I have an optional secondary email address field. It's not a required field and it defaults to undefined. But once it's populated, I'm finding it difficult to clear the value again.
I'd normally use a pre-save middleware, but when using transactions, those don't seem to fire.
The behavior I'd like is that whenever the value is false-y (empty string, null, etc.) it should be unset from the document.
I've thought of writing static methods into my various schema to purge some of these fields, but that seems heavy-handed

How to find and return a specific field from a Mongo collection?

Although I think it is a general question, I could not find a solution that matches my needs.
I have 2 Mongo collections. The 'users' collection and the second one 'dbInfos'.
Now, I have a template called 'Infos' and want the already existing fields in the Mongo collections to be presented to the user in input fields in case there is data in the collection. When no data is provided in the database yet, it should be empty.
So here is my code, which works fine until I want to capture the fields from the second collection.

These 2 work great.
But I don´t know how to query the infos from the collection 'dbInfos', which is not the 'users' collection. Obviously Meteor.user().country does not work, because it is not in the 'users' collection. Maybe a find({}) query? However, I don´t know how to write it.

Regarding the structure of 'dbInfos': Every object has an _id which is equal to the userId plus more fields like country, city etc...

I think this is the correct syntax to retrieve the country field and suppress the output of the _id field. But I only get [object Object] as a return.
you're missing the idea of a foreign key. each item in a collection needs a unique key, assigned by mongo (usually). so the key of your country info being the same as the userId is not correct, but you're close. instead, you can reference the userId like this:

here, "abc123" is unique to that collection and assigned by mongo, and "12345" is the _id of some record in Meteor.users.
so you can find it like this (this would be on the client, and you would have already subscribed to DBInfos collection):

the first userId is the name of the field in the collection, the second is the local variable that came from the logged in user.

ok, i think i see where you're getting tripped it. there's a difference between find() and findOne().
find() returns a cursor, and that might be where you're getting your [object object]. findOne() returns an actual object.
for both, the first argument is a filter, and the second argument is an options field. e.g.
let cursor = DBInfos.find({
userId: Meteor.userId()

this is going to:
find all records that belong to the logged in user
make only the country and _id fields available
make that data available in the form of a cursor
the cursor allows you to iterate over the results, but it is not a JSON object of your results. a cursor is handy if you want to use "{{#each}}" in the HTML, for example.
if you simply change the find() to a findOne():
let result = DBInfos.findOne({ /** and the rest **/
... now you actually have a JSON result object.
you can also do a combination of find/fetch, which works like a findOne():
let result = DBInfos.find({
userId: Meteor.userId()
},

country: 1
}
}).fetch();
with that result, you can now get country:

btw, you don't need to use the options to get country. i've been assuming all this code is on the client (might be a bad assumption). so this will work to get the country as well:
let result = DBInfos.findOne({userId: Meteor.userId()});
let country = result.country;
what's going on here? it's just like above, but the result JSON might have more fields in it than just country and _id. (it depends on what was published).
i'll typically use the options field when doing a find() on the server, to limit what's being published to the client. on the client, if you just need to grab the country field, you don't really need to specify the options in that way.
in that options, you can also do things like sort the results. that can be handy on the client when you're going to iterate on a cursor and you want the results displayed in a certain order.
does all that make sense? is that what was tripping you up?

Meteor, mongodb - accessing an object inside an array

Alright, so I have a collection called Polls. Inside the Polls "table" there is an attribute called choiceObjects which is an array of objects. Each object inside this array has its own attributes. What I need to do is update one of the attributes there. Ill give you a screen shot so you can better visualise what Im talking about
As you can see the choice objects have attributes like body, country etc. There is another attribute called pollid which is set to optional and therefore you cant see it right now. I need to update this pollid attribute now that I have acess to the pollid

If I understand your objective correctly, you want to update (or add) pollid to all objects in the choiceObjects array. Unfortunately $, $push, $addToSet only work with single elements AFAIK.
This might not be what you are looking for but one possible and very obvious way to approach this problem would be to update the entire array in the collection i.e.

How to concatenate strings inside a MongoDB $set

I have a rather complex MongoDB Operator that uses a where to look through multiple users to see if they have a certain value, and if so it changes the value of it. My problem is that the value it checks for can be different for different cases, so my $set would require me to add strings together to get the property that I would change. This is what I mean:

The only thing that does not work in that code is the part in the $set where I add "profile.chatInfo.subscribedRooms."+findChatroom._id
Another thing I have tried was making a variable that was equal to those strings added, and use the variable, but it also didn't work.

What I am actually trying to do here, is that whenever a chat message is sent, this operator is ran. It looks for every user that is subscribed to a room, and sets the value to false. The value being true or false just refers to whether or not the user has read the chat. This is to be used for notifications.
Edit: My question is not a duplicate of this because the MongoDB set command works differently from simply changing the value of an object's property. To add onto that, MongoDB can't even use the notation of object[property], because the docs say the only way to access embedded fields is through dot notation.

MongoDB: Find document given field values in an object with an unknown key

I'm making a database on theses/arguments. They are related to other arguments, which I've placed in an object with a dynamic key, which is completely random.

Can I find this document if I only know what the value of type is? That is I want to do something like this:
db.theses.find({relations['anything']: { type: "interpretation"}}})
This could've been done easily with the positional operator, if relations had been an array. But then I cannot make changes to the objects in ratings, as mongo doesn't support those updates. I'm asking here to see if I can keep from having to change the database structure.
Though you seem to have approached this structure due to a problem with updates in using nested arrays, you really have only caused another problem by doing something else which is not really supported, and that is that there is no "wildcard" concept for searching unspecified keys using the standard query operators that are optimal.
The only way you can really search for such data is by using JavaScript code on the server to traverse the keys using $where. This is clearly not a really good idea as it requires brute force evaluation rather than using useful things like an index, but it can be approached as follows:

While this will return those objects from the collection that contain the required nested value, it must inspect each object in the collection in order to do the evaluation. This is why such evaluation should really only be used when paired with something that can directly use an index instead as a hard value from the object in the collection.
Still the better solution is to consider remodelling the data to take advantage of indexes in search. Where it is neccessary to update the "ratings" information, then basically "flatten" the structure to consider each "rating" element as the only array data instead:

Now searching is of course quite simple:

And of course the positional $ operator can now be used with the flatter structure:

Of course this means duplication of the "related" data for each "ratings" value, but this is generally the cost of being to update by matched position as this is all that is supported with a single level of array nesting only.
So you can force the logic to match with the way you have it structured, but it is not a great idea to do so and will lead to performance problems. If however your main need here is to update the "ratings" information rather than just append to the inner list, then a flatter structure will be of greater benefit and of course be a lot faster to search.

Build a reactive publication with additional fields in each document

I want to make a publication with several additional fields, but I don't want to either use Collection.aggregate and lose my publication updates when the collection change (so I can't just use self.added in it either).
I plan to use Cursor.observeChanges in order to achieve that. I have two major constraints:
I don't want to publish all the documents fields
I want to use some of the unpublished fields to create new ones. For example, I have a field item where I store an array of item _id. I don't want to publish it, but I want to publish a item_count field with the length of my field array
Here comes the approach:

Based on the count example in Meteor documentation, I store my query in a variable handle in order to stop the changes notification if a client unsubscribes:

I add a flag initializing = true; before my query and I set it to true just before calling self.ready();. I use this flag to change my itemCount variable only if it is the publication is initialized. So basically, I change my switch like that:

It's relatively easy to keep fields private even if they are part of the database query. The last argument to self.added is the object being passed to the client, so you can strip/modify/delete fields you are sending to the client.
Here's a modified version of your fiddle. This should do what you are asking for. (To be honest I'm not sure why you had anything chained after the observeChanges function in your fiddle, so maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but looking at the rest of your question this should be it. Sorry if I got it wrong.)

To solve your first problem, you need to tell MongoDB what fields it should return in the cursor. Leave out the fields you don't want:

Solving your second problem is also pretty easy, I would suggest using the collection helpers packages. You could accomplish this easily, like so:

This will be run before an object is added to a cursor, and will create properties on the returned objects that are calculated dynamically, not stored in MongoDB.
