I am trying to provide a report of info for admin accounts in a forest. All admin accounts begin with admin. The owner of the admin accounts has been added as the "extensionName" attribute in active directory and I want to include this in the report (and ideally then look up the owners manager in AD but this could be done in 2 parts).
The value returned seems to be a multiple so I need to select the first value for this but when I use Select #{E={$_.extensionName[0]}} the entry in the CSV file is shown as #{$_.extensionName[0]=domain\username} I want to exclude the #{$_.extensionName[0]= part
Any help would be very much appreciated as I am going in circles.

It makes not much sense to manually build the csv file from strings as all data is present in objects.

I am trying to create a script that will check a list of user names and show the user full name and some attribute settings from AD. Basically I have been sent a list of usernames which are just numbers and management want to know the users full name for each username. they also want to know want division they work for.
Below is the script I have created which doesn't work.

So I'm working under the assumption that there is a column named myid in your csv file that contains the id you need to be looking up. Assuming that is the case you'll need to make a few changes here. You'll need to remove the second get-aduser as it is not really doing anything for you, and there is no -division switch available to the get-aduser cmdlet, if you need to restrict your results to just a few settings you can do that using the -properties switch and piping to select as shown below. Keep in mind that none of this will matter if the users do not have the "employeeid" and "division" properties set on their AD accounts, which is fairly rare in my experience but if your company does as a matter of policy when creating accounts should be fine. If you replace the get-aduser line in your script with this it should get the account of any user with an EmployeeID property that matches the one in your spreadsheet and then output that person's full name, division, and employeeid to your CSV file.

When in doubt, read the documentation. Get-ADUser doesn't have a parameter -Division. You need to select the properties you want in the output file. Also, foreach loops don't pass output into the pipeline. You need a ForEach-Object loop if you want to pass the output directly into Export-Csv:

This is a generic code structure that can be adapted for data collection / enumeration and production of CSV files, tailored to your scenario. We use similar at my workplace. It contains some error handling - the last thing you'd want is inaccurate results in your CSV file.

As mentioned elsewhere, division isn't a property on an AD object so you might need to lookup this data elsewhere. If you can do that with another line of PowerShell inside your foreach loop, you could add this to your hashtable object like so:

I've been trying to find analogs to this in the forums, but it's the logic that's tying me up - putting it all together.
I have an AD and I have a CSV of users that should be in a particular OU. I want to compare the users in the OU to the CSV, and users NOT in the CSV, I want to disable them and move them to a different OU.
I'm new to Powershell and having a bit of a rough time with this. What's getting me is the comparison and IF-Then logic...I just can't get the syntax right. I've tried a few options...this is what I have right now

What you could do is pipe the results into a where clause using the SideIndicator to filter on.
Compare-Object $AD_users $sams |
Where-Object{$_.SideIndicator -eq "<="} |
Select-Object -expandproperty inputobject
Using the direction that you need, either "<=" or "=>", you would then pipe into a Select-Object to restore the input object that you were filtering on. That last part would be more important if your object was multidimensional.
I am going to try this with real data as this has only breifly tested but should work.

PowerShell's Get-ADGroupMember cmdlet returns members of a specific group. Is there a cmdlet or property to get all the groups that a particular user is a member of?
I fixed my mistake: Get-Member should be Get-ADGroupMember.

While there are many excellent answers here, there is one which I was personally looking for that was missing. Once I figured it out - I thought I should post it in case I want to find it later, or it actually manages to help someone else at some point:

A second approach for presenting this is to specify the individual columns you are interested in eg:
Get-ADPrincipalGroupMembership username | select name, GroupScope, GroupCategory
This gives all the AD groups the username belongs to - but also presents all of the default properties of each group formatted nicely as a table.
The key benefit this gives you is you can see at a glance which are distribution lists, & which are Security groups. You can further see at a glance which are Universal, which are DomainLocal & which are Global.
Why would you care about this last bit?
Universal group is a security or distribution group that contains
users, groups, and computers from any domain in its forest as
members. You can give universal security groups rights and
permissions on resources in any domain in the forest.
Global group is a group that can be used in its own domain, in member
servers and in workstations of the domain, and in trusting domains.
In all those locations, you can give a global group rights and
permissions and the global group can become a member of local groups.
However, a global group can contain user accounts that are only from
its own domain.
Domain local group is a security or distribution group that can
contain universal groups, global groups, other domain local groups
from its own domain, and accounts from any domain in the forest. You
can give domain local security groups rights and permissions on
resources that reside only in the same domain where the domain local
group is located.
Get-Member is not for getting user's group membership. If you want to get a list of groups a user belongs to on the local system, you can do so by:

Get-Member is a cmdlet for listing the members of a .NET object. This has nothing to do with user/group membership. You can get the current user's group membership like so:

If you need access to arbitrary users' group info then #tiagoinu suggestion of using the Quest AD cmdlets is a better way to go.
I wrote a PowerShell function called Get-ADPrincipalGroupMembershipRecursive. It accepts the DSN of a user, computer, group, or service account. It retrieves an initial list of groups from the account's memberOf attribute, then recursively checks those group's memberships. Abbreviated code is below. I couldn't get the following to work for a particular user:

It threw an error that I was not willing to troubleshoot.
I did however come up with a different solution using Get-ADUser. I like it a bit better because if you don't know the account name then you can get it based off of a wildcard on the user's actual name. Just fill in PartOfUsersName and away it goes.

Comparison can then be done via checking through the SIDs. This works for the logged in user. Please correct me if I am wrong. Completely new to PowerShell, but had to get this done for a work commitment.

The export process for the groups and their respective members was a little convoluted, but the below works. The output filenames include the type of group. Therefore, the email distribution groups I need are/should be the Universal and Global Distribution groups. I should be able to just delete or move the resulting TXT files I don't need.
