Best approach to debugging applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning on iPhone? - iphone

Need advice on how to debug this. I'm new with limited environments and have no previous embedded or smart phone programming experience so I could use some clues.
Already aware of:
Instruments, Clanger Static Analysis, manual code review, etc. Instruments seems to be very helpful in general but quite time consuming and freezes up a lot of the time! Clanger has also helped me a lot as well. It seems like I'm just consuming too much memory in general and I'm wondering what a good strategy is. Do I release some top-level objects? Is there a 'preferred strategy'?
Just wondering if anyone has tackled this successfully and if they have any other suggestions? Thanks all.

Things you should in general take care of
Release any variables which you do not need
Always handle didReceiveMemoryWarning and release any variables not in use
Stop any memory-heavy processes in applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning like audio/video playing, UIImagePickerController etc

This does not apply any more. imageNamed: had caching issues prior to 3.x OS versions. The issue does not exist any more and you should use imageNamed: (makes implementing retina display easier)
Do NOT use imageNamed: to create UIImage objects.

Basically you're receiving this warning because (unsurprisingly) the iPhone is dangerously low on memory. This can generally be for one of two reasons;
You have a memory leak.
You are allocating far too many objects and need to revisit your design.
For the first one you should run instruments and examine your memory allocations. This can really slow down your app (and requires additional memory) so try testing areas of your app one at a time. E.g. if you have multiple views switch between them a couple of times.
For the second you will have to examine things you are doing that could result in large memory allocations. For example if you're writing a Flickr browser you might need to cut down the number of images you have loaded at anyone time, or free up some unused ones when you receive this warning.
These are about the only general rules I can suggest without knowing more about your app.
Unfortunately there's no real way (that I know of) to get figures for current memory allocation from the iPhone OS. This makes it really difficult to isolate the areas of your application that are inadvertently memory hungry.

How to fix memory leaks in iOS applications?

I know this is an old question, but a few observations.
When you have a lot of objects that are leaking, focus on high level objects (especially your own classes). We do not care why the array was not released. We care about why the item that is keeping a strong reference to it was not released. XTubeManager and GlueTubeManager are probably good places to start searching, but I don't know what other high level objects appear in the panel on the left.
When you have leaks, it is very useful to use the “Malloc Stack Logging” feature. So edit your scheme (command+<; or “Product” » “Scheme” » “Edit”) and go to the “Diagnostics” section and temporarily turn on “Malloc Stack Logging”:
Then, when you select a leaked object, you can see where it was instantiated but using the memory inspector panel on the right:
Look for entries in that stack trace that are white (your code), as opposed to all the system items that are in gray. When you hover items in that stack trace, there is even a little arrow that lets you jump to the code in question. In my example, the leaked object was instantiated in viewDidLoad.
This will not tell you why it leaked, but you will be able to see where the object in question was instantiated in your code, and you can start your investigation from there, diagnosing why an object created at that point in your code still has lingering strong references.
Remember to turn off the “Malloc Stack Logging” feature when you are done with your diagnostics.
As an aside, when we see URLSession objects that were not released, that begs the question of whether you instantiated a URLSession object (rather than using the shared instance) and neglected to call finishTasksAndInvalidate. Ideally, you would have a single URLSession and reuse it for all network activity (or use the shared instance), but if you must instantiate sessions, make sure to invalidate them when you are done.
You do NOT need to use Instruments. That's the old way. Use Xcode itself.

Watching the video is a MUST, but the summary of the video is as such:
There are two type of memory problems. You just have to repeat a flow in your app 2-3 times to be certain the memory graph has caught it
Leaks. Xcode will annotate this with purple icon. Possible are: delegates, closures
Abandoned memory. Xcode will not annotate this. But it's still increases your memory footprint. possible examples are: A repeating timer that is never invalidated, NotificationCenter, A never ending DispatchWorkItem
For Leaks the memory graph is a loop ie two way.
For Abandoned memory the graph is NOT two way. It's just an object one that Apple categorizes as 'root path' referencing your object and never letting it go. For more on this see here
In this case, just because some tool says you’ve got a memory leak doesn’t mean you have one. The amount of data seems to be less than 1MB, that’s nothing. Your tool suspects there’s a leak because data was allocated and not released, but these are single objects. Quite possible that memory is going to be released or reused later.
Use your software for hours and check if memory usage gets larger.
Memory on mobile devices is a shared resource. Apps that manage it improperly run out of memory, crash, and suffer from drastically decreased performance.
so to fix it follow this steps
Open Xcode and build for profiling.
Launch Instruments.
Use the app, trying to reproduce as many scenarios and behaviors as possible.
Watch for leaks/memory spikes.
Hunt down the source of the memory leaks.
Fix the problem.

What are Recommended Ways to Optimize Memory and Usability Speed of custom UITableViewCells with multiple UIImages?

I am using a custom UITableViewCell with 3 UIImages in a UITableView with 50-100 rows. Its similar to a UITableViewCell the Facebook iPhone app uses for its news feed view.
The application has 4 similar UITableViews which may be open at the same time via a UITabConroller.
The images are lazy loaded, there is a cache on disk so that no images are loaded twice from the server and there is also a NSMutableDictionary for images allowing in-memory reuse of the same image eg: a users profile picture appears multiple times
This setup is extremely fast but takes a lot of memory even after using the NSMutableDictionary for image reuse.
I tried a variation without the NSMutableDictionary where images are either loaded from the server or pulled from the disk cache every time cellForRowAtIndexPath is called. This setup is extremely memory efficient but causes a noticeable lag in the UITableView scrolling.
A mid-way approach is to free the NSMutableDictionary for images when a low memory warning is received.
Will really appreciate recommendations to optimize memory usage and speed in this scenario and or an insight into how the Facebook iphone app or three20 execute this conceptually.
I have an app that is very similar to yours in many respects (uses Three20, has several tabs across the bottom, each tab can have a table, each cell can have one or two images); and the approach I'm taking is the one you mentioned near the end of your post:

Personally, I quite like iOS's approach to memory management, of warning me when memory is getting tight. The Mac/PC approach of "just use all the memory you want, we'll swap it out to disk if memory gets tight" has the disadvantage that even though the OS is the only one who really knows how much pressure there is on memory, it isn't telling you. I think what every polite app would really like to say (if apps could talk) is, "I'd be happy to use as much memory as you'll give me, but I don't want to be a bother, I don't want to slow down any other apps, so if you could please give me a hint as to how much memory I can use without causing problems, I would appreciate it."
Well that's what iOS's memory warnings give you, in my opinion. So, just keep as many images cached in memory as you want; and when you get a memory warning, empty the in-memory cache. To me it's really the best of both worlds.
Also, you should definitely take a look at Three20's TTURLCache, although I can't tell you a lot about it because I haven't dug into it very much. What I do know is:
If you retrieve your messages via TTURLImageResponse, it will automatically cache them in TTURLCache's image cache.
You can also store and load your own images (and other data) in the TTURLCache.
Three20 seems to take an approach similar to what I am talking about. Take a look at this code from Three20Network/Sources/TTURLCache.m (the NO argument means don't remove from disk, only remove from memory):

In addition, that class also allows you to set a maximum size for the in-memory cache, but by default there is no maximum size.
you would purge images when they go offscreen, then read the images from the locale cache on demand from a secondary worker thread when needed. since one can zip through tables, add support for read cancellation (esp. for requests which come off the server). NSOperation is a good api for this.
if you know your table's small, then you could opt to avoid purging in such cases.
also, rescaling the image to the size you'll display it as is often a good idea (depending on how far you want to take an optimization). assuming the source is larger than the displayed size: this will reduce memory requirements, drawing speed, disk space, and disk read times.
you can also read three20's sources to see what they have done.

iPhone and Vertex Buffer Objects

I've just started playing around with opengl es on the iphone the past couple of weeks and i'm looking at refactoring some of my code to use Vertex Buffer Objects(VBO). Before I do though I would like to make sure it'll be worth it. The problem is that afaik the only reason you create VBO's is to shift a chunk of data onto the graphics card so that it doesn't need to be retrieved from system ram when it's used. The iPhone however does not have any dedicated ram that I'm aware of so i'm struggling to see why I would benefit at all from using VBO's. I have seen talk around the internet with conflicting opinions and apple certainly want dev's to use it so there's probably still a reason to use them but just wanted to see if anyone on SO had an opinion to add.
I saw no performance improvement on an iPhone 3G. I moved a bunch of stuff to VBOs, but eventually backed it out as it made it more difficult for me to pursue other performance gains. It's not the quick 25% performance increase that I was hoping for.
I've read somewhere that it can make a difference on the newer hardware (3GS), but I don't have references to back that up.

Rob didn't see an improvement for his setup, but here is an interesting post that did see a large improvement.
The main reason to existence of VBO's is the presence of static data on 3D models. The first bottleneck you encounter is the slowness of copying data to video memory (by using the unavailable glBegin/glEnd block or glVertexPointer, glBufferData and friends).
Let's imagine the old "flying toaster" screensaver. All toasts are static (changing only the position) - why waste resources copying them every frame from CPU's memory to GPU's? Copy it once with buffers and draw it with a single command. And, depending on how you do animations, even the animated toasters can be described in a static fashion.
My first 2D game I started without VBOs. When I changed to VBOs, no difference (like Rob). But, when I refactored to use more static buffers, FPS gone from 20 to 40. Since my goal was to reach 30, I was satisfied. I had some ideas to refactor even more, leaving everything static, but I don't have time now (game is on review, next one to come).

Making good use of XCode performace tools

What are the best practices, tricks, and tutorials for using XCode's performance tools, such as the Leak Monitor and the CPU sampler, for someone trying to debug and enhance performance of an iPhone application?

It depends entirely on the application and on what you are trying to do. Are you trying to optimize the whole application or are you focused on a particular problem area? Are you trying to reduce memory usage, reduce CPU usage, and/or make the app more responsive?
Before you start the performance analysis, use the static analyzer to analyze your code. It will often find memory management problems that would lead to leaks that would cause your app to potentially crash on the device.
Once all of the analyzer identified problems have been fixed, the best approach is to start by identifying perceived performance problems. That is, focus on performance problems that the user would notice. Then analyze those. If you can get away with it, do the analysis on the app running in the simulator as the turnaround time is faster.
If the problem is one of bloat, use Object Alloc and Leaks to figure out why.
If it is one of laggy/sluggish behavior, use the CPU tools to figure out where the cycles are going. Keep in mind, though, that sluggish behavior may not be because of CPU usage, but may be because the main event loop is blocked by something, most likely incorrect concurrency patterns. In that case, you'll see all samples on the main thread in some kind of a lock or wait function.
Beyond that, you'll need to identify specific scenarios to yield specific answers.

iPhone Out of Memory WEIRD crashing

My app crashes after about 20 minutes with status 101 (Out of Memory, I believe)
Debugging using Instruments - ObjectAlloc and Leaks gives me no clues. The ObjectAlloc graph stays at a nice constant level of around 1 million bytes (1MB), as does the Net # of allocations. I have got rid of all leaks.
I thought it could be something to do with number of threads, but graphing these in ObjectAlloc also shows them to be constant.
Can anyone point me in the direction of another tool, or another avenue of investigation?
Fix everything Clang finds. LLVM Clang Static Analysis
Remember that objects allocated by the system (and that includes things like images and sounds) don't get tracked in Instruments (although the top level retain counts do, of course). So it's feasable that you're loading images, say, which won't contribute much to your memory usage as show, but can drain a lot of actual memory!
If none of this strikes any chords, you could try the subtractive debugging approach - (take a copy of your project) cut out chunks of functionality until the problem goes away or you get the smallest possible thing that reproduces it. That should at least help you to find where the bottleneck is. Admittedly this will be hard (a) because you'll have to wait 20 minutes or so every time you test (but if you make this a background procedure it's not so bad) and (b) because the nature of memory problems is that there may not be one single cause, but a critical mass of smaller causes.

My experiences with Object Alloc have not been that great. It does not always give you the actual memory used by your application.
Instead, use Object Alloc with Activity Monitor. Make sure you use the "Physical Memory Free" and "Physical Memory used" options in the activity monitor. That will tell you exactly how much memory your application is using.
What do you mean by "nice level". It does not rise over time, at all? How much memory total - it could just be the phone needs some memory for some other app and yours is a little too big to stay up.
The error code 101 means that iPhone OS force quit your app. If you're using UIImageViews in your application, be sure to manage the memory on them. I've found that once my application goes over 10/12 MB, the iPhone terminates it.
If you're not using any image views (or large images), then your backend code is eating up too much space.
All I can say is you need to look at your allocation more carefully and manage what views you keep in memory at any one time.
Run your application in Instruments (Run -> Start with Performamce Tool -> Leaks) to see where your memory is getting allocated.
