I am getting a lot of errors when starting RAD7. The server doesn't respond to class changes. Sometimes the server won't start. Sometimes RAD will not acknowledge modules that I added to the server. It is kind of buggy.
I know there is metadata in the workspace, are there safe ways to clean the metadata or RAD in general?

Another tip is to remove all projects in your Servers view in Eclipse, stop your server, start your server, open the admin console of your server and see that everything is gone in there as well. If you still see configured apps, remove them in the admin console. Shutdown server, start again and check for a clean startup. This ensures that your Eclipse server plugin and the server are in sync. Now you can add your projects to the server again; maybe this will improve the stability.
If not, a more drastic measure is to remove your server config in Eclipse (don't remove the server itself) and add it again in the Servers view.
You can also try to disable automatic publishing. You can go to Preferences->Server and uncheck the "Automatically publish..." If you are using WAS you additionally can double-click on your server in the Servers view, and go to the "Automatic Publishing" section and check "Never publish automatically". This might give you more control over when stuff gets published to your server, although it sometimes has a mind of its own and keeps publishing automatically in some cases.
eljenso has posted a good half of the answer. For the server not picking up resources, verify you are publishing. Right click the server and hit publish (I personally leave auto-pub off) The admin console / uninstall ear / then re-adding the ear is another way to go, however in RAD I've never needed to do this. In WID you need to do this as the publish is hopelessly broken in that God-forsaken tool.
RAD fixes:
Another half of the puzzle that you haven't touched on is making sure your project workspace is all up to date. Sometimes you will get bleeding (build errors) even though you know it's crabbing about nothing. When this occurs, close all the projects, optional step: shut down rad and re-open rad, re-open projects, refresh all projects, then do another build/clean.
ClearCase fixes:
If you happen to be using clearcase you're really in a world of hurt when things bleed for no reason. Before you do what I listed above, you'll need to do an update, restore (yes I'm aware update is supposed to do what a restore does and more - but it doesn't because it operates off of cached data, so it only updates what it thinks it needs to update. Unfortunately the caching algorithm is flawed), then refresh. This will guarantee all the files have been pushed to your file system properly, now you need to do the aforementioned step to make RAD pick up the [possibly new] file changes that just got pushed to your file system.
If you're working with a large project and you have RAD + clearcase, sit back and relax, it's going to be a while to let that restore finish. It's best to try just update, refresh + RAD fixes and see if that fixes the problem first. Restore should be your last ditch effort on a large project. (If you have a small project just do everything every time).
Eclipse can take a -clean parameter on startup. Perhaps this is what you are looking for?
If you really need to wipe all of the workspace meta, deleting the .metadata directory within the workspace should do the trick. Note that this wipes out settings, workspace layout, and even which projects are available (you will need to re-import all of your old projects, despite the fact that they are still in the workspace dir).
If you need to purge your metadata settings, try just deleting .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources first! That saved me quite a bit of trouble...

I have deployed my application on WAS 8 as debug. The server status is [Debugging, Synchronized]. When I put breakpoints and start the application, it doesn't stop at the breakpoints. I don't see the debugger thread start either.
I am using RAD 8.0.4 and JDK 1.6.0_31. I have tried cleaning the project and re-deploying but it still doesn't work.
I was able to get it working via a complete clean install of my app. Then removing it from the server via add remove. Clearing cache from the websphere/profiles/myprofile directory. and clearing all bits of my app from the profiles folder via a search for its containing file aka (myproject-folder). Then re-installed the app via add remove on the server and it worked for me.
Best guess I have is something was actually out of sync even though the server though everything was A okay.
WebSphere is a PITA and seems to get out of state too easily.
I'd restart the server and perhaps do a clean on the server (right click on the server, click "Clean...". If that doesn't work, you'll have to take a careful look at the location of your break points. They might not be on code that's getting executed. Place a break point further upstream if necessary, follow it down just to confirm the flow.
My system died, and IT has moved me to a new machine. The old HD has been stuffed into the box as a secondary, and I've access to my old data and development. I restored the files from the repository and whatever was missing from the old HD and I'm back to developing.
Trouble is, while my launch configurations are there in each project, I'm not seeing them in Eclipse.
Is there a way I can recover these, without going through the painful process of recreating all of them?

Select Launch Configuration and hit Next.

I'm using Eclipse to develop a website, and I don't want to run Apache, PHP, and MySQL on my local computer. I already have a remote Linux server set up to do that. What I want though, is every time I save a file, Eclipse should upload that file to the Linux server. Dreamweaver does an absolutely perfect job at this task, but I prefer many other features in Eclipse.
I am well aware that there are many, many posts on Stack Overflow about this topic. I have reviewed them, but none seem to quite meet my needs. I'll go through all the possibilities I know about, and talk about why they're not quite right:
Aptana - I specifically excluded this in the question's title. Yes, it does what I'm asking for, but if you install it as an Eclipse plugin, it totally takes over your Eclipse. I only want this one feature, not the whole 800-pound gorilla that changes everything.
Remote System Explorer - I want the primary version to be on my hard drive, not the remote server. This is because I want faster file open, and code completion.
GIT or SVN - When I see other people ask this question on Stack Overflow, someone usually answers "use Git or SVN." Well, I'm already using Git. When I want to sync the entire project, and not just iterate on one file, I will do it using Git. But standalone Git is way too slow if all you want to do is see your changes working. I also don't want to see hundreds of meaningless commits. PTP, mentioned below, is a little better and a little faster, but not fast enough.
PTP - This is an Eclipse plugin that not too many people seem to know about. It has the ability to sync a local folder and a remote folder using Git, and it can do it automatically every time you hit save. This is absolutely awesome, but unfortunately a little slow. When I hit save in Dreamweaver, the change is uploaded to the server in less than one second. The PTP Git operation takes 10 seconds on a tiny project, and I bet that wait gets larger with a larger project. I'm a huge believer in super-fast iteration, and all that PTP waiting will really slow me down.
WebDAV and FTP support for Eclipse - It seems like this is no longer actively developed.
FileSync - Pretty neat, but only supports local filesystem folders.
Are there any other options that I've overlooked? Or are my requirements so specific that there's nothing that fits me right. It seems like there would be other people who want exactly the same thing.
This is my suggestion and it is not quick way to do this, but very customizable.
In eclipse you can set external tools.That means, you can set a php/java script file as external program and send some params that eclipse gives you(${resource_loc} ${project_name} ${resource_path}).
So with script file you can login to SSH or FTP or what ever you want and sync your file or project with remote system.
Just in External Tools Configuration window in eclipse you must set Location to /usr/bin/php
and in Arguments, you can set script path with eclipse variables as script args.
At last you should assign some short key to external program IF Possible.
Did you consider set up Samba server on your Linux and work on you local computer but store project in remote directory served by Samba from Linux or use mentioned FileSync to sync local working directory with network directory (which for Windows look like local and thus FileSync should work).
Or Dropbox?

You are constrained heavily I see. Maybe you have on remote host rsync? You could write small utility to manage if your local folder changed (for Windows: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365261(v=vs.85).aspx) and then synchronize folders with rsync via ssh (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-use-rsync-to-sync-local-and-remote-directories-on-a-vps). This would be completely independent from Eclipse.

Now I am in 2021, and most of the above methods cannot work at all.
Finally, I find a small plugin in Eclipse that is very easy to upload the files (may be not auto-load, but is very easy).
Install the "Alibaba Cloud Toolkit" plugin in Eclipse Marketplace;
Using the right-click "deploy" item to deploy the selected files/directory to the remote directory.
There is also a problem. In my eclipse, the inside Terminal is blank (for all terminals including local terminal and SSH terminal), the blank terminal

I also tried to uninstall Alibaba Cloud Toolkit, CDT, TM Terminal, etc.
But the inside terminal does not work anymore.
So I use the terminal in RSE now and put its view, as I just want to run my code on the remote server.
I've been using Eclipse a lot recently, and haven't had any problems with it. Last night, I was working on it perfectly fine. However, this morning, whenever I load it up, the program stops working half way the loading splash screen (before the actual workspace opens up). The information says "Loading Workbench" and just stays there forever. When I click on it multiple times, I get a message saying that Java(TM) Platform SE binary is not responding.
Google hasn't been a ton of help, and seems to just give a lot of responses about Minecraft. I'm slightly confused as to where I need to start looking, since nothing had changed since I successfully used it last. No updates to Java or Eclipse or anything else. Thanks for the help, and let me know if you need any more information!
I was actually able to fix it by just renaming my WorkSpace to WorkSpace1. Apparently it got corrupted somehow, and with the rename Eclipse was able to recreate a new one. Here's the link that helped me out:

Two things to check when you have problems with Eclipse:
First, always check the .log file, located in the .metadata directory (<workspace path>/.metadata/.log) of your workspace (not the Eclipse installation directory). Keep in mind that this is a hidden file under Linux or Mac OS. It usually contains the exception that is causing the crash. I usually delete any existing .log file before firing up Eclipse, just to make sure I am looking at the relevant log entries (the file will be recreated at startup).
If #1 does not help, you can try deleting the .metadata directory altogether. It will be recreated on startup (this is basically what you did by changing the workspace). In my experience with Eclipse, I noticed that some files can get corrupted inside .metadata, making Eclipse act weirdly. Keep in mind that this directory contains customizations you made in Eclipse and its plugins for the workspace and you might need to make them again.

Eclipse tends to be weird sometimes. If you move stuff around outside of the directories it was initially installed in, it usually won't load. I don't know if that's what you did, but your best bet is to back up your workspace, and reinstall eclipse. I'm sure that will do the trick.
Try a reinstall if possible or else, check the eclipse error log, which would be present at'/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.ui.workbench/log'.
This will help you knowing the problem.
We use Eclipse (Indigo, with STS). Certain of our projects take inordinately long to build. Often the progress indicator sticks on, say, 87%, for 30 seconds.
I'm trying to find out what Eclipse is spending it's time on during the build cycle. I hope to be able to optimize the build or disable components that are causing it to be so slow. I'd like to see a log file saying ("compiling java code", "processing resources", etc).
I've poked around the log files in the .metadata directory. I've looked on the Eclipse site for tips. I've tried using "-debug" when starting Eclipse. I still can't find the information I'm looking for.
Is there any way to get Eclipse to spit out a log of what activities it is spending its time on when it builds a project?
What kind of projects are these? Java? Dynamic Web? Two things to look at for hints about what's going on are in the project Properties dialog; look at the Builders section and the Validation section. Try disabling the validations to see if that makes a difference in your build times.
To get some insight into what's happening at the times when the build seems to hang, try setting the -debug and -consoleLog options, as described here.
Disable your virus scanner software for your workspace and project directories. I increased the speed of my build in that way.
You can go to edit Windows->preference->general->workspace->build order to edit the default that exist according to your project need.
And check the maximum number of iteration when building with cycle.

Since eclipse is a Java application, the usual debugging tools are at your disposal. In particular, you might try connecting to eclipse with JConsole and inspect the thread dump taken when the build "hangs", or run eclipse within a profiler.
You might find out things like a validator trying to download an xml schema, and waiting for the timeout since eclipse is not configured to use the corpoate proxy server - something which is very hard to find out by other means ;-)
Look into Apache Ant build scripts. Eclipse has support to auto generate them as a starting point instead of coding the whole thing by hand. The shop I worked in used tuned ANT scripts to optimize and control build order. We then piped output to log files using shell scripts.
You can try and replace with this aapt . My build for a particular project went from 3 minutes to 41 seconds....
This is an old post but thought of sharing my solution. I was using eclipse Luna and I noted that when you keep on working on a GIT branch without checking into git over the time the build becomes very slow. In my case I just deleted the folder .git and the file .gitignore and the build was very fast. Please note that this will disconnect eclipse from git, therefore use this aproach only if you know how to connect back to git branch using git commands.
