Where can I find visio shapes for software development? - visio

Anyone have any ideas on where to get a really nice collection of visio shapes, e.g for the following purposes:
network diagrams
shapes to show solution deployments
any other fancy looking diagrams for software development?

Pavel Hruby has some nice stencils for UML and SysML on his site. I use the UML stencils all the time, because they are a lot easier to use than the ones provided by visio.

There is a nice bunch of visio shapes for gui mockups here.

The above URLS (at the time of writing) take me to a page titled:

Below is another option. Some are "for pay".

Correct Use of UML Icons for Source Control in Continuous Delivery Modelling

Working on a proposal diagram of a Continuous Delivery Model, and am looking for a way to represent Source/Version Control in the diagram. I don't see a specific icon for Source/Version Control in yED graph editor, and google searches don't seem to be helping much. I can't use the same icon as database since I also have a number of databbase objects in the same model as well.
Is there a generally accepted or official diagram shape/icon/whatever for source control (git, svn)?
No, there is no icon for version control defined in UML.
(Nor is there one for a database for that matter.)
You can download the full specification of UML on the OMG website.

Visual software tool for creating complex branching logic

Is there a visual software tool (no batch coding/programming language) which can enable an end user to create complex branching logic like this tool : http://www.visuallogic.org/VLTutorial.html . Any eclipse plgun-in similar to this. I want that complex logic expressed by the end user to be represented in XML form
A set of plug-ins called vIDE might help you - it's a tool based on GMF I am currently developing. You can check out the project here.
It's still far from stable or finished, but you can draw flowcharts in it which get dynamically converted to Ecore models (which in term can be exported to XML).
My current effort is to support generation of executable Python code from the drawn flowchart.
Take a look at UniMod
In term of pure flowchart diagrams (and not UML diagrams), I didn't find anything recent.
flowchartstudio is not supported on recent Eclipse version
flowchart4j (not free) is interesting (for Java programs, so no XML representation)
DRAKON Editor
http://drakon-editor.sourceforge.net/
It it supports visual programming in several programming languages, including Java, Processing.org, D, C#, C/C++ (with Qt support), Python, Tcl, Javascript, Lua and Erlang.
Why to use DRAKON than other diagramming systems?
No line intersections. You will never find in DRAKON diagram two or
more lines intersecting each other! Not seen in other diagramming
systems!
Silhouette structure. It allows to break one diagram in to several
logical parts. Not seen in other diagramming systems!
No slanting or curved lines. Only straight lines with right angles.
Icons are placed only on vertical lines.
Branching is done in a simple, visible and consistent way.
Each diagram has one entry and one exit.

What's the name for this type of flowchart?

Take a look at this; it's very obvious how it works and what its purpose is:
(source: json.org)
What's this type of chart called?
Can I make this kind of chart in Visio?
What software do you recommend for making this kind of chart?
It's called a railroad diagram. It can more specifically be called a syntax diagram. Not sure about Visio support but other tools can get the job done: What is a good tool for creating railroad diagrams?
(source: antlr.org)
If you have a grammar file you can try to get it working in ANTLR Works, which is specifically built for working with the syntax and grammar of languages.
These are called Syntax diagrams (or railroad diagrams).
They can be created with Visio or Creative Docs .NET
See here for more info:
Tool for generating railroad diagram used on json.org
It is a syntax diagram; not sure if there is any visio addon to paint this kind of chart.

How can I generate comparable spec documents?

Currently in my company we're using Excel as a tool to write specs.
On the kind of projects we're working on, spec changes are a matter of course, and constitute a lot of the work, beyond the implementation.
I'm looking for a tool that will allow me to write a spec, including screenshots and arrows, but with comparable content. i.e., something that will allow me to compare between versions of the spec.
Free tools are better, but I guess anything with a license of less than 100USD will be OK too.
MS Word handles text and pictures, and has a document diff'ing tool built in. Open Office (being a MS Word Clone) may have something similar, and is free.
Maybe XMLmind Editor will interest you.
There's an excellent free Sequence Diagram editor: QUICK SEQUENCE DIAGRAM EDITOR. It's artifact is an xml document with CDATA tag which encloses simple DSL used for SD declaration.

Which are the most useful resources to learn to draw the UML class diagram in Visio?

I am stuck at properly aligning the generalization arrow between the classes. I could not make them appear as in the UML books.
Visio UML stencils are not very good and is very frustrating to work with them. Have a look at http://softwarestencils.com/uml/index.html, there are some very nice, free stencil updates for Visio UML 2.0. It takes very little time to get used to them. After I used them I never looked back.

One note. If you want UML diagramm looks like classic book examples you should use Rational Rose instead of Visio.
