I'm building an app (not necessarily a twitter client) and I'm trying to figure out how developers create the buttons above and below a table view where a user presses them to either reload newer data or reload older data into a table view. Does anyone know of any tutorials out there that does this or know of an easy way?
If you want fixed buttons, you can just make your table view not use the full screen and add the buttons in the space. If you want the buttons to scroll with the table view, you can add a header or footer view to the table and put your buttons inside that.
Check the Three20 project. I believe there's a tableview there that does that.
It's actually not that hard to add inline buttons to a tableview. First you check and see if there's actually more data to show. If so, you want to add 1 to the number of rows returned from the datasource. When asked to draw that last row you return a cell that contains "Press for more" caption as well as a hidden spinner instead of the standard cell that shows your normal data.
If the user presses that last button the table view handler turns on the spinner then fires off a network event. Once the network request completes the data is processed and added to the same tableview datasource that was used to draw the first table.
Now all you have to do is tell the tableview to reload itself and the new data will show up. If you want to limit the amount of data shown you can prune out N number of items from the head of the datasource before redrawing so the memory-use stays manageable.

I have made an uitableView and I am fetching data from json from a webservice
now i want that I get first 20 object first and load it in my tableView. it is happening properly
Now I want that when user scroll to the footer ..next 20 data should be fetched and it should be shown in tableView..
I am stuck here ..can anyone give me any idea how to proceed next?
May be you can put Load more button in footerview and by tapping that you can load another 20 records from server ?
Another method is to implement Pull To Refresh and modify it as per your need.
You can use a ready made implementation of a UITableView with pull-to-refresh functionality.
Have a look at EGOTableViewPullRefresh or for a simpler implementation to PullToRefresh.
If you are interested in implementing this yourself, one approach is to add a subview to your UITableView (e.g., UILabel showing the "pull to refresh" message); then "intercept" the delegate methods when the user scrolls down (or up) and calculate whether the subview came into the viewable frame. Then issue the reload.
Another approach would be adding a last row to your table; then when the tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: method of your data source is called, return a cell with the "pull to refresh" message and do the refresh.
But you will be better off using one of the suggested implementations.
To know if you reached the button of the table (aka: seeing the footer) I think you could use this:
How to know when UITableView did scroll to bottom in iPhone
I have a scrollview which has several table views as sub views...
say that I have selected a cell in one of the sub views. Now when I select a cell from another view, the cell I selected previously should not be highlighted.
How do I do this? I know I can do this using the first responder, but I am not sure how to do it.
Would anyone be able to help me out in this?
Thanks
From the apple interface guidlines:
Always provide feedback when users select a list item. Users expect a table row to highlight briefly when they tap a selectable item in it. After tapping, users expect an immediate action to occur: Either a new view appears or the row displays a checkmark to indicate that the item has been selected or enabled.
In rare cases, a row might remain highlighted when secondary details or controls related to the row item are displayed in the same screen. However, this is not encouraged because it is difficult to display simultaneously a list of choices, a selected item, and related details or controls without creating an uncomfortably crowded layout.
I don't think apple will approve an app that leaves a row highlighted (I had an app reject for that very reason). You should perform an action and then immediately unhighlight it. In some rare cases you can leave it highlighted while showing a related view.
However, if you store the current cell you have selected, you can call -deselectRowAtIndexPath:animated: on the tableview to deselect a row.
I have requirement and I am not configuring out what to do for displaying first 10 contacts in the first page(table view), after 10th contact, it should display remaining 10 contact in second page(table view).
It should also display toolbar as soon 11th contact is added in table view showing the "Next" and "Previous" .
Please let me know from where I should start?
Any tutorial or reference is appriciated
Pagination is nothing else than going through pages, just like you described.
If you want to use pagination show only as many entries as will fit on the screen, so the user always sees everything and doesn't need to scroll. You could still use a tableView and disable the scrolling though I still think a tableView is a very good way to show large amounts of data.
To navigate through your data some of these three approaches may give you an idea:
Buttons in a UIToolbar to go forth and back
UISegmentedControl in a UIToolbar
UIPageControl at the bottom, whole content is in a UIScrollView, user can swipe to go through pages
I want to make a grouped TableView similar to the Apple iPhone contacts application.
I need a lot of standard fields which can be edited, but I would only like them editable once the edit button in the navbar is clicked.
This has been bothering me forever that I could not find a good tutorial.
Thanks in advance.
This is not easy. I just built the same thing because there is nothing available from Apple. I ended up creating a single table cell with a UILabel and a UIView on it. The UILabel is for when the cell is in read mode, and the UIView is for editing. The UIView contains a number of UITextFields. These are the individual fields. I also had to implement drawing code to draw the lines between the fields. Then I had to come up with the code to pass in an address object, load it into the fields, format the text for the label, switch in and out of editing mode (with animation), and finally handling saving of changes and canceling. As yet it doesn't handle tapping the address type to select that from a popup list, but I have most of the code in place for the rest.
This could have been done using individual table view cells for each field. But then you can't select the whole thing the way it does in contacts and adding and deleting addresses becomes trickier.
I have used TableView and i am displaying Data coming from the Web.NOW I WANT TO PERFORMING the Paging TableView so after 5 record i want to show "showmore" Option and by pressing "showmore" It Display remaining data so how it is possible?
In your table view, include a cell with the text "Show more...". It should probably also contain a UIActivityIndicator that is hidden at the moment.
If this cell is tapped, show the activity indicator and load more content from the Web in the background.
When you have received a response from your web service and have parsed the results, send your table view a insertRowsAtIndexPaths:withRowAnimation: message to have it load the new data.
Depending on whether you want to keep the "Show more" cell or remove it now, either hide the activity indicator and re-enable the cell or delete it by calling deleteRowsAtIndexPaths:withRowAnimation:.
