I have read many topics about UITableViews not refreshing on iPhone, but couldn't find anything matching my situation, so I'm asking for help.
In my class, which extends UIViewController, I have a TableView and an 'ElementList' (which is a wrapper for NSMutableArray) used as data source.
A separate thread adds a new Element to the array via the 'updateList:' method.
When this happens, I want the tableView to be refreshed automatically, but this doesn't happen.
By debugging my app, I can see that 'cellForRowAtIndexPath' is never called and I can't figure out why.
I tried to add an Observer, which calls the 'reloadTableView' method (it is actually called) but the tableView is not updated.

Notifications are executed in the same thread as the caller. Updating the UI should really be done in the main thread, so you should call -reloadData on the main thread:

Also note that you shouldn't release an object that you don't own. So don't call [element release] in your -updateList method. The release should be called by the caller of the function.
That didn't quite work for me - but very close. The method I used was -
[self.tableView performSelectorOnMainThread:#selector(reloadData) withObject:nil waitUntilDone:YES];
You can also do
[self performSelectorOnMainThread:#selector(reloadTable) withObject:nil waitUntilDone:YES];
so that you can implement a method on the ViewController to do all the UI stuff that you need.

My log result is always "Switch changed at index: 0". I feel like the problem is in that CGPoint line where I've tried combinations of replacements for "sender" ([sender superview], [[sender superview]superview], etc). I don't feel like that line is pointing to the view that displays the table.
What am I doing wrong?
Note added 10/9, 9:15 EDT: my goal is to be able to handle about 100 yes/no questions in the table, so reuse is a key. I want to scroll and have the table the state of each switch, as well as be able to retrieve them when leaving the view.
Tags is an okay solution, but a little clumsy because the cells - and therefore their subviews - are continually being reused, changing their rows - and therefore the tags they need.
Instead, I generally keep one of these around:

If you use something block-based (like https://github.com/brightsoftdev/iOS-Block-Based-Bindings/blob/master/UISwitch%2BBindings.m), you don't need to worry about getting the row, because you can reference the indexPath that is passed into tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: in your block.

for iOS6+ you could maintain a NSMutableArray queuedSwitches
in -tableView:cellForrowAtIndexPath: you would take a switch, if not empty and places it on the custom cell and assign it to a property. If empty you create a new one.
in -tableView:didEndDisplayingCell:forRowAtIndexPath: you would add it to quededSwitches and remove it from it cell.
This will just allocate enough switches for visible cells and reuse them.
the switches are all wired up to one action.

So i am trying to make an application that displays names of people in a tableview and on tap moves to the next view controller that shows an image of the person.
However when i add the search bar on the table view; i dont seem to have it right.
What am i doing wrong here?

Well, just by looking at the code what I can suggest you is, first remove that call to prepareForSegue method called in UITableView's delegate method, didSelectForRowAtIndexPath.
You are overriding prepareForSegue, so in your storyboard you should have a prototype cell from where you have to ctrl-drag to the destination controller and segue it accordingly. That's a basic concept. Still having problem? Let us see your console messages when it crashes.
I'm writing an app hat has many views and I used sliding views library (ECSlidingViews). The problem is when I fill an array with objects and fill the table with the objects in tableView:cellForRowIndexPath: method, it does present the data in the table, but when I go to other view and come back the data disappears because tableView:cellForRowIndexPath: is not called. First of all , it's not numberOfRowsAtSection and numberOfTableView. It's numberOfSectionsInTableView and numberOfRowsInSection.
Things you can do :
1) NSLog your numberOfRowsInSection. Note that , If it's "0" then your cellForRowAtIndexPath is never going to be called.
2) If you are using your UITableView inside some UIView then you should add :
[self.view addSubview:table];
3) Don't Forget to include :
#interface yourViewController : UIViewController<UITableViewDataSource,UITableViewDelegate>
Once check that you reframed the tableview in ViewWillAppear.
Some times if we set out of frame, CellForRowAtIndexPath will not call.
This question is related to UITableView issue when using separate delegate/dataSource, though I have a different problem. I'm just starting to learn iPhone programming.
Basically I have one main view with a table. On the event of a cell click, a sub view with another table is shown.
The datasource and delegate for the main view's table are set as files' owner, and I have added the necessary code in there to handle the table data and everything is fine.
But, when the second table in the sub-view seems to crash the application, I did the same thing, set the datasource and delegate to the file's owner and repeated the same procedure as for the main view's table. I have no idea why this is happening.
The sub-view has its only nib/xib file and its own outlet. If i do not attach any datasource to the subview's table, it takes the data from the main view's table; I don't understand why that is, since I have set the datasource to be the file's owner.
For example: the FirstView controller has a table FirstTable, the datasource and delegate are set to the owner of Files. I added the following in FirstView.m:

Everything works perfectly.
The moment I repeat this with a second table and a second view, the application crashes saying
reason: '-[UISectionRowData tableView:numberOfRowsInSection:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x69188d0'
I have done exactly the same for second table: implemented numberOfRowsInSection and cellForRowAtIndexPatch inside secondview.m and set the second table's delegate and datasource to the file's owner. If I remove the delegate and datasource for the second table, the application doesn't crash but has an empty table in the second view.
Any suggestions? or am I missing some key concept here ?
You can use same datasource and delegate methods for multiple tables.
You have to mention in which table you are doing operations.

Try this code. This app was done for the iPad. Change the dimensions as needed for the iPhone.
I had the EXACT same issue and fixed it by deleting my connection from the table view's datasource to the files owner. Then I pasted in the code below replacing the existing cellForRowAtIndexPath. I had to change the array name to match my array and then reconnect the datasource to the files owner, and it started working. Must have been a snafu in my function code somewhere.

I have a peculiar problem. I created a normal Objective C class called SampleTable. I then extended UITableView instead of NSObject. Then in the initWithFrame constructor I initialized the table. I also made a NSMutableArray object for the datasource. I also conformed UITableViewDelegate and UITableViewDatasource. I have overridden the necessary methods also.
Now I made an object of this class in another class, and added the object as a subview. The tableView is getting drawn according to the CGRectMake() coordinates I gave to the initWithFrame constructor. But it is not getting populated with the data. I don't know what the problem is.

You did never initialize the ItemArray within your code snippet. Remove the displayItemData method and change the initializer towards:

You could also simply call that displayItemArray method within the initializer. I feel that method makes no sense as it stands and hence my recommendation to remove it altogether.
Without trying it myself, I am still pretty confident that you can also get rid of that [self reloadData] within the initializer.
During the -(id)initWithFrame:(CGRect)frm method your code calls -reloadData on the UITableView. At this point in time your ItemArray is not available.
Therefore, when UITableView calls it's delegates -numberOfSectionsInTableView: and -tableView:numberOfRowsInSection: methods to get information on what to display in the view, they return one section with zero rows.
Nothing displayed!
It might be a (one) solution to change your initialization of the ItemArray:
