Have you declared switchToNoGridView and goBack in the class interface for MainView?
This warning means that the method signatures could not be found in the class of the instance that you are calling the method on; since message dispatch in Objective-C is done at runtime this is allowed, however a warning is shown.
I'm not quite sure from your code, but I think you're encountering one of two errors. Either:
You haven't declared the methods switchToNoGridView or goBack in the MainView class declaration. For Xcode to know that an object responds to a method, you have to include its definition in the class header file, like this:

This assumes you actually want to declare them as (void), of course - they can have return values, but since you don't do anything with the result of the call in your code, I'm assuming they're void. Or:

Since we can't see your property or instance variable definitions for GridView.h, nor can we see the current method declarations in MainView.h, it's possible that you have a static method +(void)switchToNoGridView and +(void)goBack declared on MainView, but you're calling it on an instance mainView of MainView. For example:

If I move everything to the one file instead of 4 separate files for the respective interfaces and implementations, the compiler instead complains that _aVar is private. But _aVar should have been automatically synthesized in my ViewControllerSubclass.
Still keeping everything in 1 file, if I move the initial property declaration to a class extension:

The build still fails saying that _aVar is private.
If I go back to the 4 file setup for the respective interfaces and implementations xcode builds without even a warning.
If I then run the code:

Subclass value: 5
It makes sense that NSLog(#"Super value: %d", _aVar); produced a result of 0 because this variable is supposed to be private to the superclass. But then, why does NSLog(#"Subclass value: %d", _aVar); produce a result of 5??
This is all very odd.
You are confusing several different issues, and I'm somewhat confused when you talk about jumping between files and you don't specify where your errors are happening.
Anyway, there is the issue of instance variable visibility. If you declare your iVars within the interface scope, they are, by default, protected.

When you synthesize iVars, the instance variables themselves are private, unless you explicitly specify them.
Methods will always fire on the most derived implementation.

The first thing it does is call the base class implementation...

Of course, it calls super, but that part's not important here. The next line assigns 5 to self.iVar. But, which iVar? It calls the property setter method on this object. What type is this instance? It's a ViewControllerSubclass. Since you have given both your base class and its subclass the same name (and declared the property as part of the class extension), they each have their own private-scope instance variable .
However, a method is called on the most derived implementation. Thus, self.iVar will set the instance variable of the subclass. The instance variable for the base class remains unchanged.
When you NSLog the value, you are accessing the private instance variable of the base class, which has not been changed.
Now, after the base class viewDidLoad finishes, we get the code running for the subclass. It logs the value of its private instance variable, which was changed as a result of the base class calling the property setter. So, it will now print it's value, which is 5.
When you make the superclass declaration public, the compiler won't attempt to re-synthesize the property; it assumes that's been taken care of in the superclass. Thus, _aVar is not in scope anywhere in the subclass. It's private anyway, so even when you put them all in the same file that's why you see those errors.
However when you make the superclass property declaration inside the class extension, the compiler will auto-synthesize the property for both the superclass and the subclass. This ends up with both classes having private instance variables _aVar (with two distinct addresses). However, when the superclass viewDidLoad method sets the property, the method invokes the subclass's accessors, which set the value of the subclass's private _aVar variable, and not the superclass's. So that explains why you see the superclass value not changing.

I just tested your setup and could replicate your error. I came to the following conclusion:
You need to declare your #property in a .h file. If you want a private variable, declare it in .m in the category #interface (the one with the parentheses).
I am getting an issue when calling a method of return type -(void) in same class
Issue is:Instance method - someMethodName not found (return type defaults to 'id')
Declare someMethodName in your .h file.
The problem is that Xcode can't find a declaration for the method. In most recent version of Xcode you don't need to provide a declaration for a method if the implementation is in the same .m that you are calling it from. e.g.:

I have a class called ToolbarView which is a subclass of UIView and basically creates a UIView that has a disappearing / reappearing UIToolbar on top. I also have a subclass of ToolbarView called DraggableToolbarView enables the user to drag the view around the screen.
I need to create a delegate for ToolbarView so it can notify another object / class of when the toolbar reappears and disappears. I also need to create a delegate for DraggableToolbarView so I can notify another object / class when the view is dragged. DraggableToolbarViews delegate will also need to notify another object / class of when the toolbar reappears and disappears.
So I decided to implement ToolbarViewDelegate, and have DraggableToolbarViewDelegate inherit from it and have its own method like following:

When I do this only the DraggableToolbarDelegate methods are responding. However when I also do [drabbleToolbarView setToolbarViewDelegate:self] it works. I've tried doing each delegate separately without inheritence and it works fine so I believe the problem isn't in any other part of the code.
Anyone might know why? I figured by making the protocols inherit, I wouldn't also have to set the ToolbarViewDelegate for a DraggableToolbar object.

In your code, any given DraggableToolbarView instance has two properties to connect to delegates, one called toolbarViewDelegate which it inherits from its superclass, and one called draggableToolbarViewDelegate which is defined in DraggableToolbarView itself. You've got to set both of those if you want the controller to get all the delegate messages.
What you're trying to do is possible, however. You need to use the same property name in both your view classes, so that there is only one delegate connection for any instance.
First, change the name of the delegate in the superclass. (Note that you don't need, and indeed shouldn't bother, to declare an ivar for the property -- it's created by #synthesize.)

Finally, a terminology/explanatory note. In response to your previous question, Caleb used the correct term for "stacked" protocols, and Richard did not. Protocols don't inherit from each other, but one protocol can adopt the other. The relationship is similar, but distinct. When an object conforms to a protocol, it promises to implement the methods declared in that protocol. No implementation comes along with the protocol. The same is true of one protocol adopting the other -- the methods are just declared to exist in both. When you write:
#protocol DraggableToolbarViewDelegate <ToolbarViewDelegate>
you are saying that any object which promises to implement DraggableToolbarViewDelegate's methods will also implement the methods from ToolbarViewDelegate. That's all that it means. Again, no implementation comes along with that promise.
In this case, that means that a DraggableToolbarView can expect its delegate to implement the methods in ToolbarViewDelegate.
You have not given the entire code, but from whatever is out here,
Make sure that
Your ToolBarView and its subclasses have an id <ToolBarViewDelegate> delegate as a property.
Your DraggableToolbarViewDelegate extends NSObject protocol.
and your other ViewController object conforms to delegate protocol and not the toolbarview.
Once your controller gives implementation of delegates methods and conforms to the protocol, set the delegate of view's object to self and then use delegate property set in the view to call these protocol methods.

You must set the History instance as the delegate property of the AccessNumber instance.

The code seems a little bit funny but you are not telling your "AccessNumber" class who is his delegate, even though you are making the "History" class implement the protocol established by yourself (otherwise you would get a warning).
You have to set the delegate for the "AccessNumber" class like this when setting it up from within "AccessNumber.m":
self.delegate = historyInstance;
or like this when setting it up from within "History.m":
accessNumberInstance.delegate = self;
There are very vew situations where you should retain a delegate, normally your delagate will outlive the object. So change your property from retain to assign. And be sure you are setting the delegate. Where are you doing it? If your object really depends on it you should be passing it in the constructor (iniWithDelagate). Try doing a NSLog before calling the delagate method just to see if it isn't nil.
I'm arranging my methods into groups using #pragma mark in implementation. But sometimes, the method implementation code appears below the code that calls this method, and I'm getting "Instance method not found" warnings. It happens when I'm using private methods. How to fix that?
Simplest method is to use a anonymous category. Add something like this to the top of your .m file, before your #implementation:
