When programming and looking at all different apps I have realized that some apps in the app store don't have the lit highlight on the top, making it look more 3D. I have an app idea but I need to take the highlight off. The app have been programmed in Xcode, so if anyone answers, that would be great. Thanks!
from http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/MobileHIG/IconsImages/IconsImages.html :
If you choose, you can prevent iPhone
OS from adding the shine to your icon.
To do this, you need to add the
UIPrerenderedIcon key to your
application’s Info.plist file (read
“The Information Property List” in
iPhone Application Programming Guide
to learn about this file). Your icon
should still measure 57 x 57 pixels,
regardless of whether you take
advantage of the added shine.

I am new to xcode and mobile app design in general, but was able to pull together some resources and make a nice looking app optimizing for iPhone 5. However, I noticed a few problems with compatibility and am hoping someone can suggest to me a quick fix.
First, I take advantage of the entire iPhone 5 screen size, and when loaded on iPhone 4 or earlier the placement of icons is all awry. Would this be fixed by just making the entire view scrollable somehow? And if so, can someone point me in the right direction to accomplish this?
Second, I've noticed that if I am using my app while in a call (and therefore have the green notification bar at the top) it also causes misalignments for my objects. Is there a way to prevent this?
Thanks for the advice.
If you are targeting iOS 6 you should take advantage of Auto Layout. Here is a good tutorial to get started http://www.raywenderlich.com/20881/beginning-auto-layout-part-1-of-2
Add a Default-568h#2x.png launch image.
and check the all screen.
I've been a Flash animator for a few years and recently tried my hand at developing a simple iOS application using Flash CS6 and AS3.
When I began development I was creating for the iPhone 4S' screen size, however now with the release of the iPhone 5 the new screen size obviously doesn't fill the screen, resulting in the black-bar letterboxing at the top and bottom of the screen.
I have three questions to ask:
Is it possible to release two different versions of the app onto the App Store for separate devices or does it have to be universal? (I believe the answer is the latter but I can't find a definitive answer)
Is it possible to have a stage size that matches the iPhone 5's larger display but cut off the bottom (for example) for the previous iPhone sizes, in effect just adding some information to the bottom of the screen exclusively for iPhone 5 users?
If (2) is not possible, is there coding examples available change positions of items on the screen? For example, I have a title and taskbar as well as a background, could I code it to stretch to the size of the device screen rather than the stage? And would I need to alter the stage size or is there code available to do that for me?
I'm quite new to the programming aspect of AS3 and I'm sorry if there are answers that you feel that I should know, but I'm really thankful for your time to read and answer and I thank you in advance for your replies!

While all of your options are possible, you'll want to make sure your program dynamically lays itself out and resizes visual assets depending on screen size, pixel density and orientation.

You should look into doing number 3! 1 will be a hell to maintain, 2 will piss off users with smaller screen. If you design your application a bit more flexible, that would also mean you have an app that works on android ;)
I don't have any particular code for handling different screen sizes, but I remember reading about it back when Adobe introduced FP for mobile. This article gives a lot of good advice for delveloping for mobile (even though it is a bit old) -- maybe you can find something that is more up to date though google :)
I'm a bit confused on whether it is necessary to provide a plist setting for Icon file. Some references say just to set the default one (Icon.png). Others show to use every file you include in the bundle. Still others say it's not recommended to specify all of them. The technical Q&A article at: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#qa/qa1686/_index.html would indicate you need to provide plist settings for every icon though its just not clear whether that is how most do it.
What's the real deal here?
I think that you can either specify the single icon for your app, or use the array to specify each type of icon. It really depends on the app you're creating.
If your app is iPhone only, then you can probably get away with specifying the single icon (I believe if you have a Settings bundle as well, iOS will automatically scale your icon down, unless you specify the smaller settings icon as well).
However, if you are creating a Universal app then you should specify multiple icons - the iPhone and iPad sizes at a minimum.
I've created some avatars from vector artwork and saved them as transparent PNGs. If I place the PNGs in interface builder, the quality is perfect. When I place them using code, the edges are horribly jagged, as if the AA has been removed, yet it's the same image. Is there any way to place them with code and maintain nice smooth edges?
I've attached a screenshot below with the iphone ver on the right.
Thanks,
Chris
Apple compresses pngs using a special optimization formula. It is possible that this formula is causing your images to alter from the original. If you notice a difference that you cannot live with, turn off the optimization by going into your target's info panel and unchecking the Compress PNG files option under the build tab.
I have the same experience with this kind of situation.
Also when I change the hardware to iphone 4 it seems to be really good. so my suggestion to u is that unless u transfer ur app to iphone dont relay on the simulator.
You cannot really tell what will be the result on iphone by referring to simulator.
so dont panic, just check the image on iphone first before you get to any conclusion.
I want to write a simple program which can customize iphone icons like their positions or something like theme creators. and I want to know how some programs' settings are in the iphone main setting tab. I really need help.
thanx in advance
If you mean you want to retheme the springboard (the place where apps icons are displayed) you can't. If you want to retheme things inside your own application it is doable, but it really depends on the design of your application.
To get your apps settings into the Settings app you just need to add a Settings.bundle to your app, which a plist describing the preferences. There is documentation for it here.
There's an app that already does this for jailbroken iPhones. It's called iconoclasm, you can get it from Cydia.
