I duplicated some folder with project's config to a new project a few days ago and made there some modifications (project name, paths, etc).
After few days a source config dir has changed and I am wondering how to diff that folders in 2 projects to apply that changes in new project.
If I select source file and then new file and select diff option in Netbeans - it works. But is it possible to make in on whole folder ?
I was looking for folder compare in NetBeans too. I found http://kenai.com/projects/netbeans-dircomp/downloads. I'll try that in a little while...
NetBeans does not have that feature.
You could probably hack together a shell script that would do this, based on find, etc. This search for 'diff a directory tree' looks like it has some good answer.
I would recommend that you put your source code under some sort of source code control system like CVS, SVN or Mercurial.
You could use those tools to generate a diff of the original project's config between the date you made the copy and 'now'... and then apply that diff onto the copy of the project...
Or, you could apply some of the strategies described in CVS manual for handling third party sources. I think the same concepts are available for svn and mercurial.
A very old question, but Netbeans does have a CVS feature now.
Go to Tools>Plugins and find CVS and install.
After that it is very easy to right click a directory, go to tools, then apply diff patch. That will patch all files in the diff file in that directory. Simple and smooth.

The best way to achieve it is to use a version control system (VCS) like git, svn etc. and add inside your project tree a special file call .[VCSofYourChoice]ignore. For example for git this file would be .gitignore for svn it would be .svnignore.
Once you created this file you add rules to exclude files or directories you don't want to share on your version control system of your choice. To find the syntax to use google it with keywords ".[VCSofYourChoice]ignore syntax".
Eclipse and eventually every IDE create specific files, in order to save project structure and other internals. Some of them prompt you to select in which folder you want to save these files, for example IntelliJ, but I am sure eclipse as well. So you every time you use and IDE and you import a project, some files are going to be generated. The cleanest way is to 1) select to save them in a folder not related with the actual project, and as it already suggested do not commit them and add them in an ignore list, on your VCS of choice (e.g git)
Recently, my work computer was suffering hardware failures so I had the pleasure of migrating data over to a new computer. A project itself is much smaller than the generated output and a significant portion of time was spent moving those generated output.
Currently:
C:\workspace\Project\src\...
C:\workspace\Project\bin\...
Ideally:
C:\workspace\Project\src\...
C:\workspace_output\Project\bin\...
NOTE: For me the source is linked so they don't actually exist within the project.
I was able to change one particular project by following the directions here. However, I have numerous projects and it would be a fairly time-consuming to apply that change to each project (create an "output folder" then point the project to that folder).
Is there a better way to define this behavior within Eclipse? I couldn't find a ${PROJECT_NAME} system variable that I could use (e.g. something like this). I'm fine if the answer is NO as it appears that I have to manually set this for each project. Maybe the next best thing is to write a script to automatically create folders and modify the .project and .classpath.
An alternative like:
Start Eclipse on new machine, point it to the old workspace
Clean projects
Then copy projects onto new machine
Use Eclipse on new machine.

In general you'd want to use some kind of version control system or source code management, such as cvs, svn, git, Perforce, Visual SourceSafe, etc. Barring that, you can also use File > Export (or right-click on projects) to export a project or group of projects from Eclipse and it will, by default, exclude any derived content (such as compiled code). Then you can import those projects into another Eclipse workspace.

I have used eclipse for years as a Java developer. I am now messing with all kinds of new technologies but still find myself using svn (don't ask its not my descision). Anyways I don't really like SVN command line as I find it almost impossible to sort through merge conflicts.
With that I was thinking about using eclipse (w/ subclipse plugin) as my SVN client whenever I need to do SVN type things. The one problem that I have found is that eclipse loves to create a .project file. I would never want to check this in as no one else is using eclipse. I know that I can add it to svn:ignore, but that has to actually commit that ignore to SVN as well, which I do not want to do either.
Anyway to create eclipse projects without the .project file. I know sounds dumb because I am sure that eclipse needs the .project file for all its projects. Would be nice just to create an SVN project (not Java project) and have eclipse leave off any other crap.

There is no way to create an Eclipse project without the .project file (at least none that I know of), but you can tell Eclipse which files to ignore, as well.
Just go to Preferences -> Team -> Ignored Resources and add the pattern .project.
This setting is purely Eclipse-internal and does neither affect your global svn-ignores (defined in ~/.subversion/config) nor will it add any files to the repository.
Also, when checking out folders from SVN using Eclipse, make sure to create a General Project, not a Java Project, so the .project file is the only file Eclipse creates.
.project is actually not the only file that will be generated - depending on the "project natures" you add to a project.
To really separate the project from the source folders, you'll have to create the project in a separate folder - say the workspace - remove the original source folder and add the source folders as external links - see: Project Settings/Java Build Path/Source.
We want to share an eclipse Qt project via an SVN repository.
Of course we need to share the .pro file of Qt to be able to build the project.
The problem is, that without the project files you can not handle the project in eclipse but we cannot use the same as they contain local references.
Also it would be nice to use the Eclipse SVN plugin to manage this.
I already tried to check out the project and create a Qt project on Checkout but this overwrites the checked-out project file.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

There are 2 rules for Subversion (independent of Eclipse, should be the same all the time):
If the tool will regenerate a file, and you don't have to change it:
==> don't check it in your version management (may it Subversion, Git, CVS, ...).
If the file contains parts that are manually changed by a user
==> it should be checked into version management.
If you have the second case (not clear from your question), you should try to change the paths to be relative, so that others could use your project at the same location.
If you cannot change that, stick to the location in the file system. Every developer has to use an identical setup.
If you have to support different operating systems, and the files generated by the tooling are not compliant (shame on the tool makers), you should hold templates for all operating systems in your version management, and should initially (manually) make a copy, depending on the operating system you are working in.
If you have to change that file for some purpose, you have to change the templates as well and should remember that all developers have to make a new copy after that.
Sorry, I don't know Qt and have never developed in a C-environment on different platforms, so my tips are pretty vague.
Finally I found following solution:
No .cproject .project file in SVN!
Import the code files from SVN (also the .pro file for Qt)
Eclipse will ask you to create a project, so create a Qt Project with the same name (or some else, but you will then have to delete the files)
When the project was created, revert it (right MB on the Project in Project Explorer -> Team -> Revert) to the state of the repo checkout
Done, now you can work with the project
I am using Subversive plugin for Eclipse to connect to SVN Code repository.
Our code base is so huge, that am finding it difficult to search for files.
I am not able to find files using Ctrl+F key also.
Is there anyway I can search for specific files in this plugin.

NO there is no search function in subversive (and not in svn either).
You can do a small workaround:
svn ls -R [YOUR_PROJECT_REPO_URL] > all_files.txt
will list all files in your repo into the file all_files.txt (Caution: This will take some time..maybe start it of friday and let it run through the weekend..). After retreiving the file you can just search via your favorite texteditor(or eclipse).
Sure this is just a workaround, and you can not update this textfile in shorter time, but if you do not rely on most current versions it is a workaround
