Do you have any idea on how to have a getdate() function in EnterpriseDB PostgreSQL? I upgraded to EDB-PSQL, and when I try to restore old data from the free PSQL, it returns error on some tables since there is no getdate().
I believe this should automatically be created upon creating new database? But it didn't. :( Only a now() function.
Can I create the function instead? Help!
If getdate() is like now() (as with SQL Server) you can simply say
create function public.getdate() returns timestamptz
stable language sql as 'select now()';

I have a postgres timescale database running in docker. For the purposes of api testing I want SELECT NOW() to return lets say 2010-12-01 23:00:44.851242 +00:00. Basically every time I start up the container I want it to think the current date is some time in December 2010.
How can I achieve this? I cant seem to find any command to set current time in postgres. Do I need to change the system time in the docker container before the database shows up? Is that even something I can do?
You can achieve this by creating a custom now() function in a separate schema and then adjusting the search_path to prefer that function over the builtin now function:

You don't need a FROM clause in Postgres to begin with.
The function seems to return the number of days since 0001-01-01 which can be express in Postgres as:
select current_date - date '0001-01-01';

MySQL's ON UPDATE clause is shorthand for a before trigger that keeps the row's value to whatever is specified. So, yes, you can use a before trigger to achieve the same.
In fact, I vaguely recollect a mention of a built-in trigger somewhere in the Postgres manual for this specific use-case — but I can't seem to recollect where. At any rate, the gist of it is something like:
create function foo() returns trigger as $$
begin
new.testStartTime := now();
return new;
end;
$$ language plpgsql;
create trigger before update on bar
for each row execute procedure foo();

I'm currently writing some installer script that fires SQL files against different database types depending on the system's configuration (the webapplication supports multiple database server like MySQL, MSSQL and PostgreSQL).
One of those types is PostgreSQL. I'm not fluent with it and I would like to know if it's possible to make a statement into a define/populate SQL file that makes an SQL query conditional to a specific PostgreSQL server version.
How to make an SQL statement conditionally in plain PGSQL so that it is only executed in version 9? The command is:
ALTER DATABASE dbname SET bytea_output='escape';
The version check is to compare the version with 9.
Postgres does have version() function, however there is no major_vesion(). Assuming that output string always includes version number as number(s).number(s).number(s) you could write your own wrapper as:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION major_version() RETURNS smallint
AS $BODY$
SELECT substring(version() from $$(\d+)\.\d+\.\d+$$)::smallint;
$BODY$ LANGUAGE SQL;
Example:
=> Select major_version();
major_version

However real issue here is that AFAIK you can't execute your commands conditionally in "pure" SQL and best what you can do is to write some stored function like this:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION conditionalInvoke() RETURNS void
AS $BODY$
BEGIN
IF major_version() = 9 THEN
ALTER DATABASE postgres SET bytea_output='escape';
END IF;
RETURN;
END;
$BODY$ LANGUAGE plpgsql;
I think that you should rather use some scripting language and generate appropriate SQL with it.
Or you could just use
select setting from pg_settings where name = 'server_version'
Or
select setting from pg_settings where name = 'server_version_num'
If you need major version only
select Substr(setting, 1, 1) from pg_settings where name = 'server_version_num'
or
select Substr(setting, 1, strpos(setting, '.')-1) from pg_settings where name = 'server_version'
if you want it to be compatible with two digit versions.
Maybe you could make things dependent on the output of
select version();
(probably you'll have to trim and substring that a bit)
BTW (some) DDL statements may not be issued from within functions; maybe you'll have to escape to shell-programming and here-documents.
I have a sybase 15 DB and for one of my tables, I want to make a column default to the current date/time of the row insert. Is this possible?
In a sybase text, the following is said:
ALTER TABLE sales_order
MODIFY order_date DEFAULT CURRENT DATE
On my DB this doesn't do anything, as CURRENT DATE is not recognized.
using getDate() is a valid solution, you must have had a syntax error. Try it like this:
create table test_tbl (
date_data DATETIME default getDate() NOT NULL
)
Try using getDate() instead
... DEFAULT GETDATE() is correct. the case is irrelevant; mixed case may indicate a Java method, but it is a straight TSQL Function. Please post the exact error msg if you want further assistance.
Also, the ALTER TABLE method sets the Default for future INSERTS; if you want the existing data changed, you need to UPDATE (good for small tables) or unload/reload the table (demanded for the large).
Watch the NULL/NOT NULL: you do not want to change that without understanding. Again, the existing/future issue needs address. NOT NULL prevents NULL being explicitly passed as an INSERT VALUE.
CURRENT_DATE is a SQL standard that isn't universally adopted.
As noted elsewhere the getdate() T-SQL function should be used instead.
