Have you developed for OpenFire (http://www.igniterealtime.org/)?
How has your experience? pros/cons/comments, please.
I'm evaluation several technologies now, and want to know what the community thinks about OpenFire.
We tried Openfire for a chat and message distribution project.
I really liked it at first. The documentation was good, the admin tool was good and the installation was easy.
But we could not make it perform. For some reason the login-process took a looooong time.
Also I have the impression that the project is dying.
We ended up with ejabberd, which works well and was also easy to set up.

I want to build simple web based app, where users, for example, could push the spacebar button, and then do something further, like answer a question, and while other users at the same time only sees that this question is not available any more for answer. When user submits answer, everyone see it.
All right, here is an example. I have seen TV shows, where four players have one button, if one or two of them know answer, they hit a button, and one lamp turns on and the first is allowed to answer, while other keeps their mouths shut. I want to build the same idea, but in the web.
But problem is that, I don't know where to start, what keywords I should search for help on google and so on. I see, that it might work on HTML5, maybe JavaScript and so on.
I have idea using Ajax, but request it every second to get latest actions made seems rubbish. Also I found one service called Pusher, but it has limited users in one time, which doesn't fit my needs.
I need just ideas. Thanks.
Before you read the rest, a disclaimer: I work for Realtime.co but I do believe I can help here so I'm not trying to "pitch a sale".
You can check out Realtime (www.realtime.co). It's basically a set of tools for developers to use real time technologies on their projects. It uses websockets but does fallback to whatever the user's browser supports (such as long polling, for example).
Behind Realtime you have a one-to-one/one-to-many/many-to-many messaging system that will transport your messages to and from your users.
There's also a plus which is the fact that the Realtime framework is actually cross-platform. This means that you can even have your web users communicate with iPhone users, Android, users, Windows Phone, desktop applications, server applications, etc..
You can learn about the JavaScript API here: http://docs.xrtml.org/getting_started/hello_message.html#javascript.
You only need to register at Realtime.co as a developer and start using the free license.
I really hope that helps.
Okey, I think I will go with node.js.
Writing all this previous post, made me think in right way :)
Just looking for some help/suggestions with this. I require my own server for an upcoming project that will be hosting users websites. I want to build a control panel the user can log into and modify their website which will be stored elsewhere on the server. This all seems easy enough, It's just managing domains and emails that confuse me.
What should I look for to manage domain names and point them to the correct website and also what would be the best way to manage email accounts/set up new ones etc. I want to avoid cPanel/WHM if possible, I'm looking to control most things through the control panel I will be building. So any suggestions on this would be useful as well, as I will be wanting to add email accounts through php (Can be done using a shell I assume?).
I will also be wanting to measure bandwidth used on the websites contained in each users directory, any suggestions on making this possible?
I'm really looking for some suggestions on what software to use to set this up, any advice would be really helpful!
Thanks,
Graeme
It sounds like you've got a lot of creative room. May I suggest a web framework? Django. With it you can build out a nice control panel, it's template system is clean and concise. It's also based on Python and thats why I suggest it. If there is a python module for it, you can use it in Django... so things like altering, creating, etc. local data/files is a breeze. you simply us Python (you can even forget it's "django"), crunch your data and then spit it out (into django... out to templates.. to display to the user).
You'll likely want AJAXY biznazz, their is a nice Django App for that, Dajax. Django has a rich and helpful community and tons of resources. Just hop on GitHub.com and search for Django, You'll find tons of stuff.
Im building a DNS Control Panel with it. Which sounds like a minimal version of what you're doing.
I help out at a local soup kitchen, and they are wanting to create a website. Most of their criteria are pretty simple, they want to be able to have a calendar, post pictures, and have a blog. However they also want to be able to manage volunteer's. They want to be able to post a event, have a list of jobs that they need volunteer's for that event, and allow people to sign up for the jobs. I would like to base this website on a well known platform like DotNetNuke, WordPress, or Drupal. Before I go and code my own plugin for managing volunteers I decided to see if I could find a platform that already has a module available. So far I have not been able to find anything. Has anybody heard of one or used one in the past? I would appreciate any suggestions.
There's a whole range of ways to do this, but I haven't ever seen a dedicated solution (plugin or otherwise).
On the one hand, a blog could do all that you're asking. Posting pictures and blog entries? That's wordpress all over. Want a calendar? We have a plugin for that. Want to let volunteers sign up for stuff? Let them post comments.
On the other hand, the problem you're describing isn't unique: In my own experience I've wanted the software you describe. May I suggest that, if you have the time, you make something totally awesome for the volunteer community?
Our company, Wired Impact, recently released a plugin called Wired Impact Volunteer Management that provides exactly the functionality you're looking for. You can learn more and download the plugin at https://wordpress.org/plugins/wired-impact-volunteer-management/.
Does anyone know what tumblr is written in? I have been trying to figure it out.
It's PHP...

spiteshow:
I wonder if the Tumblr guys are using a framework or if it is all home brew.
Both: it’s a homebrew framework to add MVC structure and a useful secondary function library to PHP 5 that we started in 2006 and have constantly evolved into a very finely tuned framework for our needs. The same framework runs some of Davidville’s former consulting-client sites as well as all of my personal sites and projects. It’s not available publicly anywhere, but we may release it in the future.
The lead developer's blog features a lot of PHP-related material, and Tumblr was advertising for PHP developers a while ago. This isn't strong evidence, but it's possibly indicative and it's the best I could find.
Here's the full stack as of 2013.
"We're a LAMP based stack (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) with Scala for our many services. Other pieces of tech we use currently in production are Memcached, Varnish and Redis."

I just logged in to my account and added the index.php and it worked, so it must be php.

I had a nice and hacky Perl script to automatically scrape and download sales report files from iTunes Connect. As of today, Apple overhauled the sales report site. It looks a lot nicer, but it uses a lot of JavaScript and simple scraping isn't going to work any more.
So, does anybody know of a way to scrape this new site effectively?
Some previous questions point to various scripts and online services. I presume they are all broken now as well. If you know of one that is still functional, please let me know.
http://code.google.com/p/appdailysales/ was just updated to support the Sept 2010 iTunes connect changes.
Edit: please use http://www.apple.com/itunesnews/docs/Autoingestion.class.zip or something based on that, like https://github.com/danieldickison/appdailysales
