I am looking for some embedded databases. SQLite has some issues with the GUI. What about FireBird? How active is it's mailing list and forums? Does it follow all the rules of ANSI SQL? Is it suitable for production?

Is Firebird still alive? Are you kidding? It is only few weeks since Firebird 2.5 has been launched. We use it in our commercial products both ways, as a client server and as an embedded solution. We found it stable, powerfull and SQL compliant. Comparing with MSSQL there are two significant advantages.
Firebird is free;
Firebird is cross-platform.

I come from a primarily microsoft based background and typically work in C#, asp.net and sql server. I recently started working with firebird for one of my clients. I am enjoying working with it and I am using a tool called databaseworkbench for gui administration right now. I also here that IbExpert is a good gui admin tool. I plan to try it out and there are many others. I actually did not care much for the FlameRobin tool at all but that's just my personal opinion.
In my opinion if firebird shipped with a great built-in gui admin tool it would be much more popular. People struggle to figure out which gui admin tool to use and the gui admin tool you choose highly controls how you perceive firebird as a database because different gui admin tools offer different features and functionality. So far so good though here. The client I am working for right now has about 800 companies running the firebird db as a backend successfully.

Going to Firebird web site and checking their news, releases, and bigfix list will give you an idea how active it is. I am very pleased with Firebird and I can recommend it without blinking.

I'm using it on production for long time and big tables

dbvisualizer works pretty well with firebird.
I have found firebird to be pretty reliable. However, there are some gotchas.
Eg,
Select first 10 * from table_a;
instead of
select * from table_a limit 10;
Using an orm to talk to db usually takes care of these differences.

I think, Firebird Development Studio from SQLLY is close to something called IDE for Firebird RDBMS (regardless of the bugs that I encountered while using it), I haven't found other tools that has a refactoring feature that very helpful at development stage.

How to enable new table option in oracle sql developer tool

Sound a little harsh or spartan? Going much further in any of these areas would just open a big ole can of worms, and we’re committed to providing an optimal experience for the Oracle database. But, since we already support these limited features, there’s no real reason to hide it.
That post is from 2012, but as far as I'm aware is still mostly true.
Since creating tables would count as write access and a DBA feature, it isn't a matter of enabling the option for your MySQL database, it isn't supported. This is an area of functionality that only applies to Oracle databases. (Even though Oracle Corp. owns MySQL... this means the Oracle RDBMS).

Database creation and management

I was hoping you could help me with this project. I was tasked with the creation of a simple database that will include a few tables and some forms and reports. I have no problem with the design part, or the querying or any of the technical issues. I just have no idea what software I can use to actually have that single user database on one pc (i.e.not web based) where it will be tested. I would appreciate any guidance.
Use MS Access if you have it. The setup is minimal and it does not need a server of any kind.

A medical practice has approached us about using Filemaker as a fully-fledged EMR system with a HEAVY emphasis on using iPads to enter patient records, photos, digital signatures etc which can obviously be accessed on desktops as well. Ultimately they would like such a system to replace their current EMR and takeover all billing operations, patient scheduling and so forth. They only use Macs in their practice.
We have very little experience with Filemaker but found this discussing the Pros and Cons of it however it seems that Filemaker has come a long way since 2009 when that question was asked...
So overall I'm just trying to work out if Filemaker is suitable for such an application or what would be the pros and cons of using a combination of FMP12 and FM Go.
(Sorry if I've done anything wrong - first question...)

As a FileMaker Developer myself, I would say go for it. I agree with Mikhail - You WILL see results faster than any other platform. You can make changes yourself easily and live or you can get a FileMaker developer - just like you would need to get a developer for any application.
With an off-the-shelf application, they tend to be quite inflexible, however I am sure there are systems out there that allow some customisation.
FileMaker is a very capable product. We have written many applications for vertical markets, such as law firms and even a Harley Street plastic surgeon who gathers patient data on an iPad and even sketches the suggested surgery on a picture of the patient.
For those who think FileMaker is a baby, have a look at http://www.businessmancrm.com - this is a full ERP system used all over the world. This is not an advert, but a demonstration of what is possible with FileMaker.
Dollar for dollar, FileMaker will win hands down... and when it comes to time frames, there is no contest. We are open minded - We constantly look for other products to develop applications for ourselves and customers and we have not found anything more viable just yet.

Honestly, not worth it.
It's a very clunky front-end for a database.
If you do decide to pick it up your basically stuck with paying a Filemaker developer for the rest of its existence.
One of my clients at the moment has had it for the last ~6+? years after only being with them for the last 8 months i'm trying very hard to push them away from it and onto a newer system.
I can suggest looking at Mastercare EMR, Profile and MMEX.
FileMaker is perfectly capable of it, of course, and I expect you'll be getting first results much faster than with any other approach, especially with the iPad. There's quite a few EMRs out there written in FileMaker. There are downsides, of course; it was always targeted to end users so it ended up fairly inconventional from a common programmer's point of view. Many programmers dislike this. Being end-user it suffers from many simplifications (well, not exactly suffers, actually; this makes development faster as there's fewer choices), but people always want something special so there's a huge number of workarounds to overcome these simplifications. These workarounds vary from relatively harmless to very hairy ones.
For example, to sign documents on iPad you need to add a webviewer control pointed to a generated HTML page via the "data:" protocol. The page is going to have a JavaScript that captures user's touches, paints them on a canvas, and serializes this into a string. Later a script will capture the string, store it in a FileMaker field, and change the generated HTML to use this string so the JavaScript can redraw the signature. This one is relatively simple and since the functionality cannot be obtained in any other way, it's in wide use; there's even a commercial module for around $300. A complex app may consists of dozens of such workarounds; anyone who is not a FileMaker developer won't be able to understand why you need a webviewer to capture a signature or why you use a strange contraption of invisible tabs to display what looks like a simple pop-up list. I.e. it's not like you read a book and work from there; be ready to read quite a few blogs and frequent forums and mailing lists.
That said, it's a good product nonetheless with unique capabilities (that iPhone/iPad client, for one); paired with a good developer it can be very powerful.
Having developed an EMR system at a recent position for 3 years, I can tell you from experience that the requirements for a true EMR system may quickly outgrow the scope of what is easy to do in FileMaker. A few really big, important EMR features come to mind immediately:
Insurance Eligibility verification: is there going to be a way to hit all of the major payers' web services or a third party aggregator to verify insurance eligibility from the iPad?
Insurance Card OCR: sure you can snap a photo of an insurance card, but now you have back office staff typing that information in from an image. We implemented OCR of insurance cards in our EMR and it was a huge cost and time saver.
Security / Privacy concerns: HIPAA compliance is a big deal, and is FileMaker suitably transparent to be compliant? Is there any way to audit who looks at a record? How is the data transferred across the wire?
E-prescribing: All modern EMR's support electronic prescriptions, which carries a complex set of rules and implementation details along with it, I would want to be certain FileMaker could be integrated with an e-prescribing gateway before proceeding.
My main concern with using any off the shelf, cross platform tool to approach a problem as big and complex as an EMR would be getting painted into a corner down the road, having invested a bunch of time and money into a solution that may leave you unable to implement a feature or requirement, whereas paying the up front price of developing a native iOS app (and web apps and whatever else you need to integrate with) would eliminate that possibility, but obviously cost more.

17/03/2014 I'm still receiving upvotes for this, be mindful of the date this was originally answered. Though the main three items listed are still entirely viable, the list will tend towards becoming stale. There are further database technologies available that are not listed.
You have a couple of immediately recognisable and free options:
SQL Server Express LocalDB
SQL Server Compact Edition
SQLite
The SQL Server Compact download comes with the ADO.NET provider that you will need to reference in code. The SQLite download might not have it so here is a link:

All three use SQL, though likely with a few limitations / quirks. Management Studio works with Compact and LocalDB, whereas with SQLite you will need another UI tool such as SQLite Administrator:

Personally I would avoid using MS Access in the face of other free options. You cannot go wrong with LocalDB, Compact, or SQLite. They are all lovely small databases that run relatively quickly in little RAM - personal preference as to the religious aspects about liking a Microsoft product I suppose :-)
I use Sterling for Windows Phone programming as it is built to use Isolated Storage. I have only seen articles on RavenDb, but I can tell you that it is a JSON based document storage framework.
Not to confuse the situation (go with SQLite, SQL Server Express LocalDB, or SQL Server Compact Edition), but there are other embedded / local databases out there, some are relational others are object-oriented:

Not all of these are free. SQL / LINQ / in-proc support differs across them all. This list is just for curiosity.
There is now also Karvonite, however the code gallery link is broken. When it's live again I'll be looking into this one for WP7 development.
I'd recommend SQLite. We are using it for almost all of the apps we develop where I work.
It's small and compact. It does require a DLL to be in the app directory, but you don't have to have other software installed like Access or SQL Server. Also, as stated by danielkza below, "SQLite is public domain, so you don't have to worry at all about licensing." That can really make a big difference.
You can use System.Data.SQLite or csharp-sqlite to access it in a C# app using the same methods as that of SQL or OleDB.
You will also need an application to edit/manage the database. The best one in my opinion is SQLite Studio. Here are a couple more:

The embedded version is an amazing variation of the server. It is a
fully featured Firebird server packed in just a few files. It is very
easy to deploy, since there is no need to install the server.
There is some very good dot net drivers
SQL Server Compact if you want to use the official microsoft solution. This has the advantage of being able to use replication with SQL server if you need that sort of thing.
SQLite if you want to somthing very simple small and free. This is what android uses for it's internal databases so it is very well supported and there are very good .NET bindings available.
One distinct advantage of SQLite is that it is cross-platform. So if you wanted to port your application to Mono.NET then you wouldn't have any modifications to make to the database implementation.
I do not like MS Access for this solution but a lot of people have included it in their answer. It is limited due to the proprietary format and platform dependence. It does have it's advantages though. You can manipulate data easily if you have a copy of MS Access, you can build queries graphically and create macros. You can easily integrate it with the rest of MS Office.
Out of all these SQLite would be my recommendation due to it being so compact, well documented and supported by a growing army of fellow developers regardless of platform.

I realized that there is another option that everybody here forgot to mention
So long as you don't need relational tables you could use CSV file read as a dataset via ADO.NET. (More of a lulz suggestion than anything else but would be suitable in some cases and doesn't require additional libraries for a MS deployment.
If you are building a project with .NET 4.0.2 or greater and want embedded database support, consider SQL Server Express LocalDB.
It's a relatively new addition to the Express family that features a smaller installation footprint and reduced management overhead (when compared to other editions of Express), yet it maintains the programmability aspects of SQL Server. That is, unlike Compact Edition, LocalDB does not require the installation of a separate ADO.NET provider to communicate with SQL.

You could use Sql Server Express Edition as its free and is equally powerful until and unless you want functionality like mirroring etc. Have a look at this.

An alternative that hasn't been mentioned if you don't require it to be a free database is VistaDB. It's all managed code, provides tons of features for an embedded database, and offers pretty good performance. A pretty good bridge between SQL CE and SQL Server Express since the majority of your VistaDB stored procedures will run without modification in SQL Server Express. I've been pretty pleased with customer service at this point as well. I've been using it at work. No services to start. An empty DB is around 1MB and the DLL is pretty lightweight too. Has ADO.NET providers and such things. I liked it a good bit.

Management is thinking of changing out Content Management Systems. What do you use/recommend?
What UCM solution is your company using?
How big is your company?
Are you happy with the implementation?
Current setup:
The company I work for uses Oracle ECM (formerly Stellent UCM).
We have somewhere over 10,000 employees across Australia, New
Zealand and Indonesia.
It works! Having worked with the system for a while now. I can see
where the initial implementation went wrong. Its 3 years later and
it is Rewrite Time! (Three year itch?)
1) CMS: Oracle's BEA Aqualogic
2) Size: 10,000+
3) Experience: As an end user with full community and content admin privileges, I find the tool to be outdated and stifling in terms of knowledge sharing and trying to get the benefits that exist in social networks. Perhaps this is due to the implementation, and not an inherent weakness in the product. Not sure of the future direction of the product either, since Oracle recently acquired it.
Our external business orientated site is running joomla which once you get passed the learning procces of how it constructs sites, is very good for a multi-user environement.
Company = 25+ people
We use Plone open source for the internal site...
We use a DotNetNuke intranet site. I think we need to upgrade or redesign cause I like Joomla much more.
1) We are moving from Microsoft Content Managemet Server 2002 to Sitecore 6.0 though we have internal PHP Wikis and Dot Net Nuke sites that have user content as well.
2) 1,000-2,000 people with about 3500 pages of Web content to migrate.
3) I'm content with it so far. There is still a lot of work to do in the migration and it will probably take a couple of years to move everything over, which includes legacy ASP and ASP.Net 1.1 and 2.0 sites that haven't been worked on in a few years as well. It would take a lot of things going easily for me to be happy with an implementation of this size.
Drupal. I've used it for small and medium sized projects.
1) We're using a CMS that was custom written in vbscript and sucks horribly. We're going to start using MODx for our external stuff, but we're not sure what's going to happen with our internal stuff.
2) A university with about 30,000 students (about 10,000 of which have ties to my department).
3) MODx looks cool, but haven't had much of a chance to use it. As stated previously, our other CMS sucks.
Tridion. And yes, there is that 3-year itch. Is Oracle on a new release or did the first implementation just look wrong now? I remember Stellent being on the development team's shortlist.
Us:
Mid-sized (small?) 700+ employee company, with over a dozen websites, but not all sites have the CMS implemented. In-house development team has worked on, and still support, a few custom solutions. Legacy code never dies. :-)
All of the CMS we researched had compelling features, but for content re-use, cross-site sharing, and programmability we found Tridion to be a good fit (compared to Ektron and RedDot). Our mandate was to stay ".NET programmers" and not have the tool take over the site.
I'm comfortable with and like with Tridion, but admire those of you who've done CMS with multiple platforms.
1) My company currently uses Word Press or no CMS at all. We are however working on a CMS that will work exactly as we want it to.

In my daily work, I use Tridion, and some of my colleagues use Hippo. At home I use Plone.
Institution-wide we see a variety of systems.
A few Plone sites. I'm a Plone fan.
The centre within which I work is somewhat multi-institutional (a good history of collaborative work) (one of two research centres situated within the same building) and the Plone sites that I'm setting up are fitting very nicely with diverse user/group requirements.
Companies I worked for usually developed CMS systems inhouse I've mostly worked for webshops and when cranking out websites is your core business the best way to get an edge is to be on top of this sort of thing.
So custom CMSes for:
Simplicity, just deliver what the client wants and nothing else.
Understanding it, it's developed in house so you can usually just talk to the guy who wrote it.
Profit, it's easier to ask for license fees.
We use the Alterian Content Manager application. It is very robust and suites our needs well.
