I have a new MVC-2 project where I added the area 'member'. I created a controller named: 'profile'.
This works: http://localhost:1234/Profile (loads up the index() function)
This however doesn't: http://localhost:1234/Member/Profile (i get a 404 error)
Am I missing something here?
There's no reason for this not working. From the default project template:
Right click on the project Add -> Area : Member
In ~/Areas/Member/Controllers add ProfileController containing a default Index action
In ~/Areas/Member/Views/Profile add Index.aspx
Run the application and navigate to /member/profile => it shows the newly added page
Can you check your Global.asax.cs file, see whether it has the following code in Application_Start
AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas();
If http://localhost:1234/Profile works, you might need to check the namespace of your ProfileController. It should be:
namespace YourProjectName.Areas.Member

TL;DR:
The Backend Layouts of the site package tutorial (Default/Standard and Two Columns) do not show up for new pages in Appearance -> Backend Layout. The error message in this thread (1.html) is an artefact of prior Backend Layouts which came from the original old site setup.
Solution:
To make the Backend Layouts of the site package tutorial show up there, I had to edit the root page of the site: Resources -> Include static Page TSconfig (from extensions) and add site-package from the Available Items list.
This can also be achieved without "Resources -> Include static Page TSconfig (from extensions)" but via file ext_localconf.php in the root of the site package extension (gpcf_theme):

I'm still trying to bring an existing (older) web page into Typo3 11 following the TYPO3 Sitepackage Tutorial.
Currently I get an

Tried resolving a template file for controller action "Standard->1" in format ".html",
but none of the paths contained the expected template file (Standard/1.html).

I can't find the reason of this error, because I have no idea, where the needed template Standard/1.html is requested from.
Is this some kind of hard coded default if nothing else is found?
If this is the case, the real problem is, that my customizations to the Sitepackage Tutorial source code seems to be wrong, but it never produced any different error despite the above one, which isn't really helpful. Ok, this is speculation, because I don't know.
As you can see, the site package was renamed to gpcf_theme, it's available in the backend and applied as root template to the site. No other template is active (AFAIK). A simple newly created test page creates above error.
If I uncomment in Configuration/TypoScript/Setup/Page.typoscript the lines so that:

same error, no hello world.
Any idea how to locate the reason for my misery?
Maybe the fix is really simple. Try to go into the backend:
Edit the homepage
To to the "Appearance" tab
Set the Backend Layout for this and subpages
Save your change
There is a good chance that it is working now.

In TSConfig is the definition of the backend layouts, columns, labels and what is written in the pages.backend_layout db-field
DB columns if the value makes sense pagets__<yourTemplateName>
The TypoScript that reads this db-field cuts of the pagets__ takes the rest, adds .html and searches in the paths defined in the TypoScript below.
check if the Folder and Filename of your Template file are correct.

as you noted that you have renamed the site package you may have missed some occurrences of the original package name and so some configuration is missing or pointing to nirvana.

My original intent was to categorize actions according to the actual type of content they return (eg. html, fileresult, ajax result, etc) in my ASP.NET MVC code. To determine if an action returns html, I need to check if the action actually returns a ViewResult, including actions like the following which has a return type of ActionResult but actually returns ViewResult using the View method.
So I wanted to check if an action actually IsUsingMethod(mvcViewMethod) and as long as it calls any of the View method, I will consider this action as returning html. But now i couldn't get a reference to the mvcViewMethod.

As suggested by Patrick, I checked out the class browser and only see this:
I don't see any View methods. This is much less than what I see in ILSpy of the same dll, where I can see the View method clearly defined:

In the class browser, if I right click this action and choose "Select methods that I use (Directly or Indirectly)", I will see this query result:
I still couldn't see it uses the View method.

I try to create an action to output a JSON.

The technical reason is: No template was found. View could not be resolved for action "list" in class "My\MyStorelocator\Controller\StorelocatorController".

From my understanding a classname like Tx_MyStorelocator_View_Storelocator_List should be correct. But its not working
You will need to create an empty file for the HTML view for your controller, e.g. Resources/Private/Template/Storelocator/List.html, even if you do not plan to use the HTML view or if you just return the content yourself (which is perfectly fine).
The reason for this is simply technical limitation.
First of all, TYPO3 now has a built-in JSON view, described thoroughly here: https://usetypo3.com/json-view.html. It lets you easily define which properties you'd like to render.
The error message means that your Controller is still pointing to the TemplateView - because thats the error the TemplateView throws if it can't find the defined template file.
You can specify which view to use to render within your controller. You can either set a default view via the $defaultViewObjectName property, like so:

Your path syntax is probably out of date. Instead of writing a render() function in Classes/View/Storelocator/List.php, try writing a listAction() function in a Classes/Controller/StorelocatorController.php file. Extension Builder should have created this file for you, if you made an aggregate model with the usual "list, create, edit ..." and such actions.

Keep in mind that there is a mismatch between the documentation and the Extension Builder generated PHP code files. Developing TYPO3 Extensions with Extbase and Fluid has some parts up to date, and other parts still using old syntax.
I've asked a question like this previously but I believe this is different (that one was just a general question).
I implemented Zend_Navigation.
For menu I used DB Table to store menu items and did recursion on Array-s to get the tree of menu items.
All of this action takes place in my module called Menu. Inside I have:

Bootstrap.php
inside index controller I have a function menuGenerator($menu_id)
So following tutorials on Zend_Navigation, the menu is initialized in the application bootstrap.
my function inside application's bootstrap looks like this:

By default, Zend Framework's autoloader doesn't autoload controllers in the same way it loads other components (models, view helpers, forms, etc), so PHP throws the error saying it can't find the class. The quickest way to get around this is to explicitly include the controller in Bootstrap.php. The following should work:

It's pretty unusual to call a controller method during Bootstrap since there are many bootstrapping tasks upon which controller actions depend. In your case, the controller method menuGenerator() is not actually an action, so presumably it will not be a problem.
Nonetheless, it's still unusual enough that I would move the menuGenerator() method out into its own class. Then invoke that operation both at Bootstrap and in your controller.
I am creating new Eclipse RCP application. I used "Hello RCP" as template project to create a new project. It works fine. Then I tried adding new menu. I used two extension points "org.eclipse.ui.commands" and "org.eclipse.ui.menu". I created handler class and also defined the menucontribution location uri(). But my menu is not showing up. I strongly suspect my location uri is wrong. But I dont know how to correct it. I have pasted my plugin.xml contents here. Let me know if anyone has a solution. You can use ApplicationActionbarAdvisor class to define menus and commands for toolbar as well as menubar.
Firstly you have to declare the commands you want to add in your app like below:
private IWorkbenchAction newAction
Then with the help of ActionFactory class, you have to define the commands in makeActions() method like below:

Now, after declaration you have to add the commands in menus by using fillMenuBar(IMenuManager menuBar) method :

Sometimes, you have to use IContributionIem class for declaring commands because all the commands are not in IWorkbenchAction class.
