I am trying to figure out how to copy a ringtone file (.m4r) embedded in the app to iTunes when connected. After the file is copied into iTunes, they can simply sync the file like every other file. I know this is possible, since there are other ringtone apps that do this exact same thing. If someone could point me in the right direction or maybe provide some sample code, that would be great. Thanks.
You can share files from your app's Documents directory with iTunes. Simply add the following XML to your info.plist:
<key>UIFileSharingEnabled</key>
<true/>
Now, files in your app's Documents directory will appear in the File Sharing section of iTunes. Is that what you're after?

I was wondering whether my app's sqlite database will be transfer over to desktop when user sync the app with iTunes or do I need to do some coding to ensure that it will be transferred?
Please advice. Many thanks.
You can transfer the content of your document directory's document folder contents by adding UIFileSharingEnabled key to your info.plist.
Please check the below image:
After adding this key to your info.plist, when you sync your iPad with iTunes the documents inside the document folder will be listed in iTunes as shown below:
This is a nice tutorial for starting the iTunes filesharing: How to integrate iTunes file sharing
We not only can backup our files on itunes but also in icloud....
this is how the app data is persisted along the the app updation ,ios upgradation....
As you long you put your data files in standard locations within the app's sandbox and you don't explicitly flag the file as a file that shouldn't be backed up, then the data files will be backed up to iCloud or iTunes (depending on how the user has setup device backups).
It depends on your file scheme, you can decide which information is necessary and should be backed up and which one should not because it can be easily recreated.
Look for the "Where You Should Put Your App’s Files" section

I have made an iPad application. Now i have a requirement to upload any file into my application shared/document folder from my System through iTunes.
I have learned from this link http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4094 that we can make our application for File Sharing. If our application has enabled File Sharing then our application will be seen under File Sharing Tab in iTunes.
So i want my app to be seen under File Sharing Tabs so that i can share any file into my application.
Please can anybody guide me through this.
Thanks
Just define this key in your info.plist file -
<key>UIFileSharingEnabled</key>
<true/>
I have saved an musicfile in the iphone path called-"/var/mobile/Applications/92B12BF1-88E1-4FD5-93DC-8311EC3B072A/Music" programmatically .Can I see those files in the iphone ?.Please tell me ,thanks in advance
Yes, you can set in your Info.plist the itunes file sharing property, which will make all files in your app's Documents directory visible to users, both to copy to the desktop and to save files from the desktop to the phone: "Application supports itunes file sharing" and check the box.
Not unless you jailbreak the phone. Other options are
1) store your file under <Application_Home>/Documents, then you can fetch the file from iTunes. You need to set UIFileSharingEnabled key in your Info.plist to YES.
2) run your program in your iOS simulator and examine the file.
92B12BF1-88E1-4FD5-93DC-8311EC3B072A is a GUID, which means it will change.
Second, the only way for you to "view" files outside of your applications sandbox is to be jailbroken.
I am creating a simple application in xcode
Now i need to create ipa for that file.
By google i found some info regarding this.
create a folder named Payload and copy the app file,Zip the fine and rename zip to .ipa.
But i have a doubt in the this path users/username/library/application support/iphone simulator/4.1/Applications
i found a folder named with random alphabets and numbers.
In that i found documents, library, tmp folders along with my application.app.
is i need to copy all the 3 folders into payload or just my application.app is enough.
And i did n't get my icon in over the .ipa.
How can i get it.
can any one pls help me.
Thank u in advance.
If you go to Build and Archive in Xcode, it will package your app into an .ipa for you.
When in Organizer, click on your app, then click on the Share... button, then choose Save to Disk...
Also, I wouldnt suggest manually creating your .ipa files.
Apart from using Build and Archive, you can also try dragging and dropping your .app file onto iTunes. Then when you do 'reveal in finder' for the app, you'd see the IPA.
As far as I know, from iOS SDK 3.2, file type handling is added and an iOS application can associate itself with some file type so that other applications can open this kind of file with the application.
Because of the sandbox mechanism in iOS, I wonder when a file in appA is opened with appB, which registered itself with this kind of file, what will happen? Is this file copied to appB and both appA and appB keep a copy of this file? If the answer is yes, is it possible to make appB open the file under appA's document folder? I cannot find any Apple documentation on this.
For example, appA stores a Keynote document in it, if I open this Keynote document with the Keynote app, is it possible to let Keynote app to edit this document in place so that after editing, appA can see the updated document?
Any help is appreciated.
There are a few different questions in here.
When you register your app to handle types of files using the info.plist entry Document types your app will be on the list of apps that are shown when you perform an action with that file (for example tapping a file attachment in an email). Then when your app is launched, the method application:didFinishLaunchingWithOptions: is run as normal, and the launchOptions dictionary will contain the path to the file that was sent to your app. What you do with the file from there is up to you, but it is a copy of the file, not a link to it. So if the user makes changes to the file in the original app they must 'launch' your app again, with the new file.
See here for more info: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/uikit/reference/UIApplicationDelegate_Protocol/Reference/Reference.html#//apple_ref/occ/intfm/UIApplicationDelegate/application:didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:
You can't access any other app's document folder with the current SDK.
Also, for sharing documents in iTunes (like Pages, Numbers etc), look into the two info.plist entries Document types and UIFileSharingEnabled. (Apples docs: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/General/Reference/InfoPlistKeyReference/Articles/iPhoneOSKeys.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40009252-SW20) Basically, by setting UIFileSharingEnabled to YES you will expose the /Documents directory of your app in iTunes. Then again it's up to your to show the user once they are back in your app what's in that directory.
Sndbox implemented over standard unix permissions control. All applications are stored in folders with unique name (actually, GUIDs), however owner for them is the same mobile:mobile.
So it looks like they just sends full file path to application which opens the corresponding file.
