I want to embed image processing into C#.net web application.

One way would be to create CGI files that could be called by a web server. Have a look here and here.

I was thinking about this more and I think that you could also use matlab for web applications through python. Specifically, mlabwrap would give very nice interface to matlab. mlabwrap is very good, i personally use it to access matlab from python. Thus you could build web app using python's pylons or django and access matlab through mlabwrap.

You could have a look at Matlab Builder NE, a Mathworks product for creating .Net components that might be perfect to integrate with your .Net web app:

No personal experience with this, but it sounds like something that would suit your needs perfectly.

Using Compute Engine in Eclipse with GWT

I'm planning on making an online game using GWT (HTLM5/JavaScript) and Google Compute Engine for server. I used to make a turn-based game using AppEngine (servlets) and that worked fine. Is there a way (plugins etc) I can develop a Compute Engine project within Eclipse? Or what would be the best work flow in this case. Cloud9 seems interesting but, I'm not sure how does it integrate with an GWT/Eclipse project....
My aim is to make developing and debugging client/server stuff as fluent as possible, so other ideas are welcome too :)

web applications, dynamic charts and simulation tools? (for MATLAB users)

We are a group of students of chemical engineering mostly proficient in MATLAB and Simulink but with almost no clue of web programming.
Our idea is to develop some online examples by using interactive graphics with dynamic effects and 2D/3D simulations. We know that MATLAB has some solutions but the compilers are not available for the student version. Furthermore, we want to promote the use of free open source alternatives (SciLab, Octave, NumPy)
Ideally, we would like to use a 4GL which includes a free library for numeric analysis and combine it with graphic user interface framework for web applications.
An good example will be Easy Java Simulations that generates java code and can be easily implemented online. However, we are looking for something that can be executed without java or another plugin (see google chart tool)
Although we are willing to learn (Python, Java), we would like to start with the easiest solution towards a painless transition for a chemical engineer ;)
We will really appreciate our recommendations and suggestions!

Java Web Framework Prototyping tools

At the moment Iam evaluating java web frameworks. More precisely Iam talking about GWT, JSF2 and apache wicket. One very importent criteria in this evaluation is prototyping.
The prototyping process in my company can be described by the folloing:
The customer can produce GUIs with an easy to use WYSIWYG editor, by drag&drop-ing web components on the corporate predefined website structur. There is also a need for some litte dynamic being like navigation from one frame to another.
So Iam looking for tools. These tools should not only provide nice GUIs but also deliver
some basic code, which can be forwarded to the development. The aim is to avoid missunderstandings between designers and developers as much as possible. More or less the
developers just have to implements the code, but not to implement the optical requirements.
In addition it would be desirable to customize the components thats been used in the WYSIWYG editor. Does anyone know any good tools for the mentioned frameworks (GWT, JSF2, wicket)?
One of the challenges with WYSIWYG tools for UI is that you generally have to pick between rapid prototyping and maintainable code. Even then, as soon as you want to do something that's not supported by the prototyping tool, you can implement it as you would without the prototyping tool, but your round-trip functionality (namely turning your app back into something that can be edited) is broken or crippled unless extra work is done to generate the metadata that the editor needs.
Upgrading between major releases is another issue. Vendors and groups who have developed these tools have a historically spotty record of when they stop supporting older versions, reasonably because of limited resources and sometimes difficult problems with how to track solid innovation happening in the framework itself.
My suggestion instead is to prototype with an RIA prototyping tool like Balsamiq Mockups or use a grid system like 960 Grid to generate rapid prototypes, then use a web development framework that allows your developers to run the code with or without the backend server. Wicket has a tag called that is great for this kind of thing -- web devs can fill a div with stuff that a component should generate, and Wicket devs can wrap the contents of that tag with after they implement it. Both parties can coexist for a long time that way.

There's nothing like this for Wicket that I know of. The closest you would get to any kind of resource reuse from your customer would be to give them a drag and drop HTML editor - the resulting HTML could then form the basis of Wicket page/panel layout.

What languages can be used to make dynamic websites?

So, there are several languages which will allow you to create a website, as long as you configure the server(s) well enough.
To my knowledge, there is:
PHP
ASP.NET
Ruby(on rails, what is
that all about?)
And thusly, my knowledge is limited. Ruby and ASP, I've only heard of, never worked with. If there are other languages, I suppose they have some way to make files containing the needed html. It would then suffice to add a line to the Apache config to associate the file-extension.
And if other languages: are there any notable characteristics about the one(s) you mention?
ANY language can be use to make a dynamic website - you could do it in COBOL or FORTRAN if you were twisted enough. Back in the olden days (about 10 years ago) most dynamic websites were done with CGI scripts - all you needed was a program that could read data from standard input and write data (usually HTML) to standard output.
Most modern languages have libraries and frameworks to make it easier. As well as the languages you have already mentioned, Java, C# and Python are probably the most common in use today.
Typically a web framework will have:
a way of mapping URLs to a class or function to handle the request
a mechanism for extracting data from a request and converting it into an easy to use form
a template system to easily create HTML by filling in the blanks
an easy way to access a database, such as an ORM
mechanisms to handle caching, redirections, errors etc

How can you forget Java ? :)

It runs on Windows, Linux/Unix, Mac OS X, and has been ported to the Java and .NET virtual machines.
Python is a perfect scripting language for web applications, e.g. via mod_python for the Apache web server. With Web Server Gateway Interface a standard API has been developed to facilitate these applications. Web application frameworks or application servers like Django, Pylons, TurboGears, web2py and Zope support developers in the design and maintenance of complex applications. Around libraries like NumPy, Scipy and Matplotlib, Python is a standard in scientific computing.
Among the users of Python are YouTube and the original BitTorrent client. Large organizations that make use of Python include Google, Yahoo!, CERN, NASA,and ITA.
This could be for your interest.
Virtually thru CGI all programming languages that produce output may use for web page generation.
Basically, you can use any language (if you are hosting your own server)
Very closely related and very interesting is this article where LISP has been used to build a very succesfull website.
Python has a 3rd party module CherryPy which can be used with or without a http server.
Amongst others: Erlang (YAWS, Mochiweb), Python
JSP has the advantage that it automatically wraps your code in a servlet, compiles that to bytecodes, then uses the just-in-time Java compiler to recompile critical sections into native object code. Not aware of any alternative which allows optimizes your work automatically in this way.
Also allows you to develop and deploy on any combination of Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux.
If you'd like to choose one for the beginning, you should check out PHP first. It gives you the basic clues about how dynamic sites work in general.
After you've become familiar with the basics, I recommend ASP.NET.
Fist off, you should know that ASP.NET is a technology and not a language. (It actually supports any language that can be used on the .NET platform.) Also it is not to be confused with classic ASP. (The old ASP was much more like PHP.)
ASP.NET is very easy to begin with, and after you have some clues about its concepts, you can always dig deeper and customize everything in it. The http://asp.net site is a very good starting point, if you are to learn it. I think it is really worth the effort, because even if you choose not to stick to it, it will give you some interesting ideas and concepts.
I tell you its most important advantages:
The code is compiled (and NOT interpreted like PHP), and it has a very good performance. (In a performace comparsion, it is 10-15 times faster. http://www.misfitgeek.com/pages/Perf_Stat_0809.htm)
It can be run on Windows without effort, and on Linux / Mac / etc using the Mono project.
It implements the Separation of Concerns principle very well.
It has most of the general functionality you'll need built-in. (Such as membership, roles, database management, and so on.)

What programming languages are best suited to create technical charts for stocks on the server side and then stream out to http and see it on the browser.

It is hard to say what is "best".
This is something that Python can do well since it has add-on libraries for complex mathematical data manipulation such as NumPy and for quantitative finance such as Quantlib. Matplotlib is a very flexible Python charting library.
In addition, there is an IronPython-based spreadsheet called Resolver One that is popular in the financial services industry and they have an add-on that turns any spreadsheet into a web application.
If you did decide to use Resolver, you should be able to use almost any Python or .NET library and integrate it with your application.
I would suggest that you take a look at SVG as the graphical format for the technical charts because you can zoom into these charts in the web browser.
Any language with a graphical library will do. I know of implementations in Perl, C++, and Java
The perfect language for you would be Scala, here's why. You can write your serverside program using Scala, and you can then use the Scala.js framework to display the output(The Chart) to the browser(Client Side). The output will then be handled using Javascript.
Many websites currently use this method, for example, Twitter and Facebook.
