List of cities in HTML page - forms

I want user to select city during filling his profile. What is the best way to do it in web application?
I there any other way than just store a list of cities in my DB. Maybe some public API?

The best way to do this is with a big database, unless you want to allow the user to type in a city name.
Fortunately for you, you don't have to go out and make the database yourself. Here's a directory of free databases: http://www.sqldumpster.com/databases/geographic/

I'd just go with a simple text field with an auto-completer. You can get a list of cities but you'll have to keep it up to date and you'll have to worry about nonsense like the difference between "Saint John", "St John", and "St. John".
Sending an entire list of cities to the client will just be a user interface nightmare, a selection list would have thousands and thousands of entries and you'd have to send a lot of data to the client; there's no reason to hate your visitors that much.
The auto-completer can use the currently chosen cities to provide suggestions for new cities. If you have city names in several places, then just keep a master city list somewhere for the auto-completer and updated it with new entries every day. You will end up with a list of cities but the list will build itself.
A simple text input will work the same everywhere and just about everyone can type out the name of their city pretty easily.

You could store them in a text file, have a copy in your server (for validation), and load the cities via AJAX.
That approach will break, however, for users without JS.
And, to be snobby, can you define best? Best in what sense? Fastest? Lightest? Awesomest? Most Pythonic? I'm not sure what you mean by that.

should I create a seperate model (collection) for this?

i am building a small web app with MERN, i have a collection that holds "name, email, password, avatar url, and date" and i am going to add to the users some info like a "bio, hobbies(array), "visited countries(array), and another array"
question is, should i create a diffrent model for the users info, and add owner field that refers to the other model?. or should i put all of them there,
also i might add the following and followers option in the future.
The user's info should be in the user collection, I could see there is no reason to have a separate collection for it. If you want to reduce the responses from listing users, you could use populate to remove unnecessary fields.
Regards to the following and followers, I think there are 2 approaches:
Adding a new field which used to store id and necessary metadata (name, avatar) of users to the existing collection
Create a new collection which is a combination of users and users they are following, or are followed. You then could use Virtual to get this information from the User collection.
Personally, I prefer the first approach although it requires more effort to maintain the list to be accurate. E.g remove an item out of the list when your follower stops following you.

Firestore Structure for public/private fields

I'm after some advice on a Firestore DB structure. I have an app that has a Firestore db and allows a single user (under the one UID) to create a profile for each member of their family (each profile is a document within the collection). In each of the documents, there are the personal details of the family member (as fields. For example, field1 = firstname, field2 = last name, field3 = phone number and so on). This works well but there is one other detail I need to attribute to each and every field within each profile. I need to be able to set a private or public flag against each individual field (for example: firstname has public flag, last name has private flag, Phone number has private flag and so on..). It would be nice if each field could have nested fields underneath (such as a "private" bool field) but that's not how Firestore works. It seems to be Collection/Document/Collection/Document/and so on...
If I didn't need to private/public flag, I would not have an issue. My data would fit perfectly to the Firestore structure.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might best achieve this outcome?

Family Profiles current structure without flags
You can use structure above. With this structure you can fetch private data and public data separately whenever you need. But I have to tell you if you want to show only first name to other users in your app you can use queries on what to show to users. And also always use unique ids to store data rather than hardcoded Names such as JaneDoe or JoeDoe. Otherwise you can face some problems in the future regarding fetching data from firestore.

Structuring cassandra database

I don't understand one thing about Cassandra. Say, I have similar website to Facebook, where people can share, like, comment, upload images and so on.
Now, let's say, I want to get all of the things my friends did:
Username1 liked you comment
username 2 updated his profile picture
And so on.
So after a lot of reading, I guess I would need to do is create new Column Family for each single thing, for example: user_likes user_comments, user_shares. Basically, anything you can think off, and even after I do that, I would still need to create secondary indexes for most of the columns just so I could search for data? And even so how would I know which users are my friends? Would I need to first get all of my friends id's and then search through all of those Column Families for each user id?

Ok so i did some more reading and now i understand things a little bit better, but i still can't really figure out how to structure my tables, so i will set a bounty and i want to get a clear example of how my tables should look like if i want to store and retrieve data in this kind of order:

So let's say i want to retrieve ten last uploaded files of all my friends or the people i follow, this is how it would look like:

Now probably the biggest challenge would be to retrieve 10 last things of all categories together, so the list would be a mix of all the things...

With sql, you structure your tables to normalize your data, and use indexes and joins to query. With cassandra, you can't do that, so you structure your tables to serve your queries, which requires denormalization.
You want to query items which your friends uploaded, one way to do this is t have a single table per user, and write to this table whenever a friend of that user uploads something.

Note that upload 6 is duplicated to two different columns, as whoever did upload6 is a friend of both User A and user B.
Now to query the friends upload display of a friend, do a getSlice with a limit of 10 on the userid column. This will return you the first 10 items, sorted by key.
To put newest items first, use a reverse comparator that sorts larger timestamps before smaller timestamps.
The drawback to this code is that when User A uploads a song, you have to do N writes to update the friendUploads columns, where N is the number of people who are friends of user A.
For the value associated with each timestamp-upload-id key, you can store enough information to display the results (probably in a json blob), or you can store nothing, and fetch the upload information using the uploadid.
To avoid duplicating writes, you can use a structure like,

This stores the uploads for a particular user. Now when want to display the uploads of User B's friends, you have to do N queries, one for each friend of User B, and merge the result in your application. This is slower to query, but faster to write.
Most likely, if users can have thousands of friends, you would use the first scheme, and do more writes rather than more queries, as you can do the writes in the background after the user uploads, but the queries have to happen while the user is waiting.
As an example of denormalization, look at how many writes twitter rainbird does when a single click occurs. Each write is used to support a single query.
In some regards, you "can" treat noSQL as a relational store. In others, you can denormalize to make things faster. For instance, PlayOrm's #OneToMany stored the many like so

This is the wide row approach so when you find your user, you have all the foreign keys to his friends. Each row can be different lengths. You may also have a reverse reference stored as well so the user might have references to the people that marked him as a friend but he did not mark them back(let's call it buddy) so you might have
user1 -> friend.user23, friend.user25, buddy.user29, buddy.user37
Notice that if designed right, you may NOT need to "search" for the data. That said, with PlayOrm, you can still do Scalable SQL and do joins(you just have to figure out how to partition your tables so it can scale to trillions of rows).
A row can have millions of columns in it or it could have just 10. We are actually in the process of updating alot of the documentation in PlayOrm and the noSQL patterns this month so if you keep an eye on that, you can also learn more about general noSQL there as well.

Think of each DB query as of request to the service running on another machine. Your goal is to minimize number of these requests (because each request requires network roundtrip).
Here comes the main difference from RDBMS paradigm: In SQL you would typically use joins and secondary indexes. In cassandra joins aren't possible, since related data would reside on different servers. Things like materialized views are used in cassandra for the same purpose (to fetch all related data with single query).

International Registration Form

When designing an internation registration form how should I be asking for a user's information. Should name be [First, Last] or [Common, Surname] or simply [Name]. Does first and last name make sense for all names?
When asking for state and zipcode what would alternative terminology be, should I even be collecting this information for some countries?
We're recently getting into international users and methods and I'm hoping someone with experience can weigh in on the proper fields and labels that would be present in a solid international registration form.
I would reccomend just a single input for name, not all names are logically separated into just two parts, some people have just one name (such as Teller, and if used for addresses, the name may be a company name). Labeling is complicated since first and last name is not the same as given and family name, if names in your language is normally in which field should the first/family name go and the last/given name go?
For an address input you need:
Name/Company: <text box; no validation or munging>
Address: <Multiline textbox; no validation or munging>
Country: <text box or select-box if you're paranoid>
Making it more detailed and you're creating problems for foreigners.
The only thing your local post service need for a foreign address is the name of the country. The rest is country specific and may include several fields or in some cases something like "behind the church in the woods" etc.
Do not include zip code or anything country specific like that unless the user has chosen a country you have extensive knowledge about. People tend to know how to type their address in a free form text area, but they may actually mess it up if they have to force their address into foreign fields.
The worst you can do is silently discarding invalid fields. That happened to me when registering my address (in Norway) for a magazine subscription from USA. The norwegian addres format is:
<Name or company>
<Street name> <house number>
<post code> <city or suburb>
NORWAY
But when trying to force these fields into the closest equivalent in a very US-centric form they ended up mailing it to:
<my name> Oslo/OSLO//<And a lot of garbage letters and symbols>
/NORWAY
It eventually arrived, but it was a month delayed. It probably helped that I have a unique name, and that we're only about 5 million people in Norway. I doubt it would have arrived if I my name was "John Smith" and lived in New York and some web form had munged it to John Smith NY/New York;/ USA///

I would suggest just the name, so that user could enter whatever seems right.
As for State, I quite don't understand what you need this information for. But I am not U.S. citizen, so...
Two address lines (without implied format), zip code (terminology is OK, but do not try to validate) and country name should be sufficient. The problem with "States" is, some countries do not use such concepts (either at all, or use different regional split concepts, i.e. in Poland it is voivodship, in England it would be county, etc.). Again, I wouldn't use such details.
How you accept the user data is based on what you want to do with it. Having said that
Name: This is also country specific but based on the suggestions I've got "family name" and "given name" are generic/common across any country. Some names have multiple "family name"'s.
Address: Different countries have different address formats. You can get different format information here
As a non-US resident, who has a very non-standard address (live on a boat, which requires additional address information, and very often does not have a Royal Mail standarised address) I do find that US-centric registration forms are very irritating. As far as name goes, I have found first and last name appropriate. For addresses I would consider either leaving labels off for most lines or labelling them innocuously as "address line 1", etc. In addition make sure that there are a number of such lines; the dialog box is long enough to accept multiple fields; and the dialogs will accept address delimiters such as comma. The only ones I would leave as they often displayed are Town/City and Country. Zipcodes should not be referred to as such - the minimum courtesy I would expect from a registration form is a request for Zip/Post code.

I am able to read the barocode but i am confused about how to get the food product value from the barcode value .
Do we need to call a webservice or create a database locally ...

Have a look at OpenFoodFacts. It's a database that does just that, with ingredients, calories, etc. It's based on the barcode.
Product bar-codes contain almost no product related information - they are mere unique identifiers. The system used in Europe - EAN13 - consists of a country code, a manufacturer code, a product code, and a check digit. To translate any of this data into usable information you need a database or web-service.
I know this was asked a long time ago but I figured I would give an update for anyone looking now... We use an API called upcFood (www.upcfood.com) They offer a simple API that allows lookup of food products directly from the barcode. upcFood includes nutrition data, Products Data, allergy data, ingredients etc. from a single search.
In case anyone else is looking for this info in 2021, you can get this data directly from the USDA's Food Data Central API, which is public domain. One of their endpoints has a query param, which supports keywords and, as a little tinkering revealed, UPCs! For instance, here's a query for a snack I had laying around:
