I am still struggling with the sign up page for my iphone app - at the moment I am having problems with the gender field.
My idea was that when the user presses the gender field, a table view containing "Male" and "Female" slides up from the bottom and the user then puts a checkmark next to his actual gender. I do not really understand how to correctly obtain this gender table view though.
Currently I have my GenderTableViewCell which points to both a user interaction enabled label and a GenderTableViewController and then I have set the input view of the first to the table view of the latter. In this way a table with "Male" and "Female" actually do slide up when the gender field is touched but as the table is not in grouped style as I specified it to be in GenderTableViewController.xib I have a feeling that I am not on the right track!!
I have been googling and googling but have not been able to find any similar examples - maybe it is not nice to have a table view sliding up? Should I use a UIPicker instead?
I would use a UIPicker instead. It's going to be much easier to implement, and it is a far more standard experience for the user.

Ah! I got the answer. It's just art. It's an UIImage that looks like a 2 cell tableview with borderless UITextFields. Why do I never guess it's art?
Just use a UIVIew with rounded corners for the background and add the two text fields as sub views.
You can take a UITableView and add UITextField as accessoryType for your purpose.

Strangely,when the menu firstly poped up,the default selected cell was highlighted correctly,but very quickly the highlighting disappeard.

The didSelectRowAtIndexPath will not called if this is present. One way to workaround this is set [self.view addGestureRecognizer:tap]; towards your targeted view only such as [self.svContent addGestureRecognizer:tap];.
Alternatively, check which view is touched.

Seems that you are setting the delgate property correctly, also you added the protocols to the same ViewController. So the problem can be either there is no data in the tableView for selection, or there is some View on top of tableView which is blocking you interaction with the tableView.
Use

I have a table view with five cells displaying the settings of my app. I want the first four cells to appear at the top. The last cell isn't actually a setting, it says "Legal" and takes you to the EULA, so I want it to appear at the bottom.
Now I know I could use – tableView:viewForHeaderInSection: and– tableView:heightForHeaderInSection: to create some padding, but I really don't like hardcoding in dimensions this way. I also don't want to use UIButton, because I want it to be exactly the same style as the rest of the cells.
Does anyone know the best practice for going about this?
I'm assuming you're using a grouped table view, like the settings app. What I've done is created a group section between the top and bottom group sections, to which I've add a 'transparent' row cell, that I size dynamically.

The critical parts are in cellForRowAtIndexPath, where the transparent row is created. The trick here is to add the transparent view to the cell's backgroundView, and set the cell selection style to None.

TOTALCELLS is the total of all of the cells, including the transparent one. You may need to do additional work on this algorithm, as it doesn't take into consideration what happens when number of cells grows beyond what is visible, and I haven't tested it with various combinations of navigation and toolbars.

I have a UITableView in an iPhone application which I am refreshing (by calling [self.tableView reloadData] in the action method for a UISegmentedControl dynamically embedded in one of the UITableView cells. The table view is refreshed to update a text value for one of the cells.
However, the following code seems to produce an unwanted side-effect. It appears that each time the UITableView refreshes it creates a new instance of the UISegmentedControl (and possibly the images - I'm not sure) over the existing one(s).
The only reason I notice this is that with each refresh a barely perceptible border starts to form around the UISegmentedControl and the application slows noticeably. I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions/code-solutions to my current predicament.

You're right, it is creating a new instance of the UISegmentedControl. It's because you are using a generic cell identifier, #"Cell", then adding the UISegmentedControl each time, never removing it. The cells get cached containing the UISegmentedControl, you retrieve the cached cell and add the control again.
You could use a more specific cell identifier and if cell != nil you know it contains the UISegmentedControl already. Or create a new cell each time that way you're not using a cached cell that already contains the control.
With the image view you just set the cells image view property without adding a new view to the cell so that one is ok, it gets replaced each time.
Since the text you are trying to update doesn't have to do with the UISegmentedControl I think you should be able to use a more specific cell identifier and add the control only on cell creation.

Not sure that I understand the question. The number of sections and rows in the table are controlled by the table view's UITableViewDataSource (in most code examples, that protocol is implemented by the view's controller, but it could be a separate object).
The code you've posted comes into play much later in the process: after the view has determined how many rows are present, total, and which are currently on-screen, and needs to render those rows. But, in general, it and the other methods of the UITableViewDelegate protocol are how you'd customize the appearance and behavior of the table. (Along with the properties of the view itself.)
The number of rows in the tableview is determined by what you return in
-(NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section
if you return 500 there, you'll have a 500 row table.
