We the the way to connect to CVS server on extssh, listening at default port is:
Set the CVSROOT as following:

But we need to connect to CVS server with non-default port. Can you please suggest how/where to specify the port number?

I'm trying to connect to a remote Firebird database "test" (alias already added). It is not an embedded server, and is installed on VM with IP 192.168.1.147.
Here is my connection string:
User=sysdba;Password=masterkey;Database=test;DataSource=192.168.1.147
However I got an error:
FirebirdSql.Data.FirebirdClient.FbException (0x80004005): Unable to complete network request to host "192.168.1.147". ---> Unable to complete network request to host "192.168.1.147".
I've done some research on that but haven't got a clue yet. Some help needed. Thanks
My IP address is 192.168.2.108, and I can ping that server IP successfully
Make sure that
Firebird is running
Firebird is listening on port 3050 on the specified IP (or on 0.0.0.0)
Your firewall allows access to port 3050
You're using the correct host name
For Linux, the Firebird port is closed by default. You need to modify RemoteBindAddress in /etc/firebird/2.5/firebird.conf from
RemoteBindAddress = localhost
to
RemoteBindAddress =
and restart service.
Make sure you have excluded tcp port 3050 in VMs' firewall.
Ok. I think your connection to firebird is faililing because the firebird client looks up the network service file by name and does not find gds_db in the services file.
If your connection string refers to the host by using IP, the Client might fail to identify it because it gethostbyname() and not by IP
Manually include this in the file and you should be fine.

I am running openerp(odoo) application from amazon cloud server using putty and it is ubuntu Headless(NO GUI) server. PostgreSQL is the database used for this application. Right now I am only able to access it in command mode as there is no gui in Putty. In Windows, I have installed pgadmin3. Is it possible to access it from here by configuring?
You can configure your security group to open up the postgres port accessible from your IP address (I would highly recommend the access to be limited that way). After that you can just point your GUI client the external IP address of your instance using the port where the service is running on.
I suggest you to use pgadmin gui tool to access postgres database.
You can set up an SSH tunnel in putty and use that to access the remote database with your local pgadmin3. This is a very good and secure way to do things.
First, in Putty (Connection / SSH / Tunnels) add a source port of your choice, 5000 for example. Then enter localhost:5432 for Destination (providing postgres is running on port 5432 on the server). Press Add and save your session. Next time you open your ssh connection with Putty, the tunnel will be active.
After this, set up a new connection in pgadmin3, Host: localhost and Port: 5000 (and your username and pasword, of course). Now, if the putty session is active, you should be able to connect.
In postgresql.conf file, find a line called
listen_addresses = 'localhost' and change it to '*'
Next in pg_hba.conf add this line in IPV4 local connections,
host all all (Your external ip address in CIDR format) trust
Finally restart the database using this command,sudo service postgresql restart
I am trying to use MongoDB for remote connection. First I tried localhost and internal ip address to build the connection. Both of them succeeded. Then I tried external ip address to connect on my own computer of MAC as an experiment first. I have created an admin user for the database in MongoDB. The bind_ip option is also commented in mongodb.conf. The firewall should also have been turned down. But the connection cannot been built still. Does anyone know the reason?

To allow connecting remote clients (which is your case) to MongoDB Server.
Make sure to do set bind_ip to either of values, in your mongodb.conf file -
Following is with any IP
bind_ip = 0.0.0.0
Following for bind to specific IP
bind_ip = 10.52.36.99 (or any specific IP)
I have been using rockmongo as my client for mongodb on localhost for testing.
For prodction i DONT want a client online as this might reduce security.
Is there a client which will allow me to connect SSH? kind of like MySql Workbench?
or
Can rockmongo stay on my local computer and i connect to EC2 instance which has mongodb for production viewing?

Is there a better alternative to all of this?
My setup is a standard LAMP stack. willing to make any changes necessary.
MongoHub has the option to connect over ssh, but the app kind of sucks. It crashes a lot.
A more generic approach would be to just create your own ssh tunnel to your production server, and then connect over that through whatever client you want. The client won't care as long as it can make the connection.
On OSX/Linux, creating an ssh tunnel might look like this:
ssh -L 8080:127.0.0.1:27017 -f -C -q -N username#domain.com
This would open a local port 8080 which will forward the traffic to the localhost interface at the mongodb default port 27017 on the remote side. You would point your client at 127.0.0.1:8080 as if mongodb were running there locally.

One workaround would be to set that file in a separate folder and make a .htaccess file that restricts access to only your ip address. Any requests not from your ip address would get denied access...
I have an Ubuntu server running Tomcat, and I want to connect my Eclipse EE to it so I can work with JSP.
I have no problem connecting to a similar Tomcat service when it's installed on my machine (not a server), but whenever I try to connect to the remote server I don't seem to have the option of choosing a Tomcat service.
Is there some guide you can recommend (I didn't find one), or is there something I did wrong?
The "remote" Tomcat (or more generally the app server) must be configured to permit such connection.
Did you start the remote server with these parameters:
-Xdebug -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,address=8000,server=y,suspend=n
Alternatively you can add the word jpda at the end of the startup.sh (or .bat) script just when calling the catalina.sh script.

After enabling those options, you have also another task to do: enabling the network connection to the configured port (8000 in the above options). It depends which firewall is installed on the server but usually it is iptables.
Example of iptables command to enable connection to port 8000:
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8000 -j ACCEPT
If your server have a GUI installed, one easiest way is to use the "ufw" – short for 'uncomplicated firewall' as explained in this site which is just a graphical way to configure the iptables.
One way to test the connectivity to the server (if the port is open) is to use telnet from your computer like this:
telnet your.distant.host 8000
and if the command opens, the port is accessible, if the telnet command times out, the port is closed.
