Suddenly my project explorer window has disappeared from Eclipse. I try selecting Windows > Show View > Project Explorer, but nothing happens. What can I do?
Try Window --> Perspective --> Reset Perspective.... Remember that your own settings, if any, will also be reset.
Try to close Eclipse IDE and reopen it and
click on window->show view->project explorer
For me it was like this...
Window->Show View->Other->General->Project Explorer
Or
Window->Open Perspective->Other->Java (default)
Open Eclipse IDE
Enter "Project Explorer" on Quick Access (Search text box).
Either select from drop-down or press Enter
Window -> Perspective -> Reset
Reset the IDE
Window -> Show View -> Project Explorer
Select Window->Show View, if it is not shown there then select other. Under General you can see Project Explorer.
If none of the above solutions work, Try Window-> New Window
I had encountered the same problem as well. The following solution helped me to get over it:
Window -> Show View -> Package Explorer.
You can use the shortcut as well. It's Alt + Shift + Q, P
Using the latest Luna upgrade.
The only solution that worked was Window >> New Window.
It's very easy to lose that critical bar.
If you are on either Eclipse or Spring tool suite then follow the below steps.
(1) Go to 'Window' on the top of the editor. Click on it
(2) Select show view. You should see an option 'Project Explorer'. Click on it.
You should be able to do it.
Close the current perspective:
Reopen it using Window -> Open perspective.

in the screen you can see on left side navigation menus ... now click on those buttons one by one ....you will get your solution...
Try changing the perspective to JavaEE and then check.
Not sure if this is problem but, this ticked me off for a while since I did not realize what was happening at first - maybe this will help others.

I set up an (existing) PHP project in eclipse(neon) and then tried to configure and run debug. A Popup "Confirm Perspective Switch" is shown - I selected "Yes", not realizing what it actually does. The "perspective" then changes and you no longer see the project explorer anywhere. You cant "open" the project explorer window from top nav > window > show view, since its no longer there (which is BS, it should show something that gives you indication of current and other "perspectives" - at least for newbie.) No where now does it give project explore options.
Now you must change the "perspective" back from debug to PHP (at least in in my case).
This can be done a couple ways, easiest is from the icons on right top right side side. One icon would be the "bug", and next to it is the PHP icon. Just click the icon "perspective" you want. The other way is from top nav bar > window > Perspective > open Perspective, then select PHP. Could they hide this any deeper?
I know this is likely second nature to those who have used eclipse for a while, but was frustrating to me (on day one) till I figured out what was going on.

applied the same method to reset the perspective, no changes appaired then I restart the Eclipse IDE which was fine then.

How can I change that highlight color which is VERY annoying
As you can see, whenever I highlight anything and click somewhere else, it changes like this. How can fix this little bug?
Open Window>Preferences>General>Editors>Text Editors>Annotations
Modify the color for "PHP elements 'read' occurrences" and "PHP elements 'write' occurrences". Obviously I'm using eclipse PHP but you should see similar options in the annotations list for non-PHP eclipse.
Here's what worked for me:
Open Windows -> Preferences -> General -> Editors -> Text Editors ->
Annotations
Select "Occurrences (PyDev)." The "Text as" drop down box on the right should read "Highlighted," and the color is very light.
Click the color button and change it to something easier on the eyes.
I found the best thing to do is to go into GWindows -> Preferences -> General -> Editors -> Text Editors -> Annotations and change everything from Highlighted to Underlined and choose the underline color to suit.
If you are using Python in eclipse (using PyDev) than the above solution won't help.
Than you have to go to
"Open Windows>Preferences>General>Editors>Text Editors> Annotations"
and change the color of Breakpoints(PyDev).
Once you do that the color of all which are matching your current selection will be in the color you chose and not the annoying yellowish highlight color.

I had to spend an inordinate amount of time searching for an answer to this question. Here is a picture of the Preferences showing which selection is for changing the background color of text you have selected with your mouse in the editor. This is totally different from the Occurrences that people keep pointing out.
If you're using PyDev, use the following:
Open Window>Preferences>General>Editors>Text Editors>Annotations
in the list of Annotation types there is the "Occurrences (PyDev)" Option, which is the one you'll want to change.
I found a blue highlight for dark mode works well in PyDev.
For me, this is what did it (seems it's different for everyone):
Open Windows -> Preferences -> General -> Editors -> Text Editors -> Annotations
Under "Annotation Types":
select "Boot Dynamic Info", then uncheck the "Text as" checkbox on the right.
Using the answers above to set the colours, here are some that I found worked in RGB:
(65, 66, 36)
(83, 55, 55)
In my case, Spring Tool Suite 4.14.0 (202203), changing "LSP Read Occurrence" color under Windows -> Editors -> Text Editors -> Annotations solved my problem.

I had the same issue with highlighted inactive code.
I was able to change it in Window>Preferences>C/C++(or other programming language)>Editor under "Appearance color options:" select "Inactive code highlight" and change to the desired color.
Similar post about inactive code in Eclipse.
Also check "Vwrapper Search" color setting if you are using that plugin

For some reason it overrides other defaults. Tested with the Darkest Dark theme on Eclipse 2022-09.
Annotations is the setting you want to Change (whatever Eclipse you are using - example below is CDT):

This info window you see down here appears every time some CSS property or HTML attribute is written. The one on the top contains documentation about that element, and I dont want it to appear as it is very annoying when coding.
How can I make it not appearing? I've searched on Tools - Hints but cant fins this option.

Click on Tools--->Java Platforms.
Classes tab will be open by default,please switch it to Javadoc tab!
There will be a manual entry for javadoc like http:\\docs.oracle.com/java/api/...,kindly click on Remove button,close this window and then restart Netbeans IDE!!!
This effect will be done and you won't be seeing any popups!

How do you disable content assist in Eclipse?
I do not mind allowing it to come up when I press ctrl & space, but I do not like how it automatically comes up as I am typing. It just messes me up. For instance it, I would end up scrolling through the options when I just want to go up a line. It is getting tedious having to press escape whenever it decides to pop up.
I have found the page in the preferences for it, but I cannot seem to find out how to disable the auto-pop-up.
EDIT: I am using the application for android development. I have already disabled "auto-activation" for both Java and XML, but it does not seem to have an effect. The window will still pop up automatically.
EDIT2: I tried restarting the program after making the changes, but it still had no effect. I made sure that the option changes were still in effect, and they were still in effect.
This Eclipse3.6 Help page on Content assist can help (it is for C++, but the same idea applies for Java on the Java > Editor > Content Assist preference page.):
The idea is to disable what triggers the content assist.
Go to Window → Preferences.
In the filter text search bar, type "typing".
Go to Editor → Typing.
Uncheck all that you don't want.
Don't know if you did get it to disable but I was having the same trouble as you.
I did the following:
Window > Prefrences > Content Assist
Uncheck all and hit apply
Java > Editor > Content assist > Advanced
Uncheck all and hit apply.
Hope this works if you still haven't found an answer.
It's not readily obvious and there doesn't appear to be a global option to turn it off all over the place. This may sound obvious, but it's important to make sure to turn off Auto-Activation on all of the different structured editor types that you do not want it active on.
In Eclipse Mars.1 :-
go to Window then->preferences -> Java -> Editor -> Content Assist ->Advanced -> Restore Default ->Apply and then OK.
Go to Window -> Preferences -> PHP -> Editor -> Content Assist -> Auto Activation
Untick the box "Enable auto activation"
