I have been trying to figure this out for about a hour and can't seem to find the answer. So basically my app starts, and loads a new view, this view has a tabeview, i understand tableviews, but not navigation controllers as much.
I want this navigation controller to only be loaded with this new view, I don't need it throughout the new app.
I know you can use the app delegate, but I'm still confused if this would work with what I'm trying to accomplish.
If someone could either show me an article about this or just give me some code, that would be amazing.
Thanks very much
You can use navigation controller as the root view controller of your app and hide its navigation bar inside views that don't need it.
[self.navigationController setNavigationBarHidden:YES animated:YES];
To show it again, just call the same method with first parameter set to NO.

First, sorry about my English, I know it's bad, but I'm trying to make it better...
Here is the issue: I'm making an app, with a view controller, with a lot of views... I want to make a button to go back to the main one. I think I have to dismiss the views I pushed. I dont know if that is necessary or if I can push it again directly. If it is, how can I do that? I've tried to put a dismiss method after the presentModalViewController one, but it didn't work.
Any help?
Thank you so much for your help ;)
It hard to tell from your question, but you may be confused by the navigation stack and the modal controllers.
A modal controller gets presented and dismissed using:
presentModalViewController:animated:
dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:
Navigation controllers are pushed and popped using:
pushViewController:animated:
popViewControllerAnimated:
So make sure you are using the correct method to pop or dismiss the view in question.
To present and dismiss a modal view you'll have to use delegation.
Here is an explanation for how to present and dismiss modal views.
Modal views are handled differently than views controlled by the UINavigationController or UITabBarController, which just push them onto a view stack or array of views.
I want to present a Modal view in the middle of the screen in on an iPad. This view will have a search bar and a table view. It will present search results. This is up and running.
Now i need to add a navigation controller so that upon touching a row in the above table view, a detail view will be pushed in from the right to allow the user to determine if this is the item he wanted.
I tried adding a navigation controller to my modal view but it doesn't display and i couldn't find a tutorial for this.
Can someone please give me a hint?
EDIT: I'm starting to think that i first need to push a modal navigation controller and then add the tableview to this, is this the correct approach? Can someone please give some details on this if that's the case?
Yes this is possible. You have to present the NavigationController modal. Your ViewController will be the rootViewController of the UINavigationController.
I posted some code in Adding UINavigationController to existing UIViewController
I am trying to write an iPhone app that has both a UITabBar controller (and its associated views) and a plain vanilla view controller that is not part of the TabBar (i.e. an initial config page that only gets displayed the first time the app is run).
I am able to put a Tab Bar Controller and a View Controller in MainWindow.xib and shuffle between the two in the app delegate.
While this works I'm wondering if this is the best way to be implementing this.
It doesn't feel very "MVC-ish" to me but I think the two different controllers both need to be root (?)
I don't know how else I would do it.
If the config page is really only a "run once" affair, you could just pop it as a modal view from within the tab bar controller via the presentModalViewController:animated: method. (If on the other hand the config page is ever likely to be required in the future, I'd just add it as another option on the UITabBar.)
You would make the tabbarcontroller the default view. And present the viewcontroller modally in viewWillAppear or similar method. Then when you want to switch to the tabbar, you'd dismiss the modal view controller.
Fundamentally, what I want to do is within, for example, ViewControllerA display ViewControllerB and ViewControllerC. How would I do that?
Thanks in advance.
You don't display view controllers, you display views. Having said that, you can do something like this:
UIViewController *a = ...;
UIViewController *b = ...;
[a.view addSubview:b.view];
Now, having said that, you shouldn't do it. Tons of stuff does not behave properly, because there are tons of undocumented interactions between UIView, UIWindow, and UIViewController. There is nothing in the documentation that says it won't work, but random things stop behaving properly (viewWillAppear: on the interior view's VC doesn't get called, etc).
If you need this functionality, you should file a bug with Apple.
The default template for a navigation view controller should do what you want assuming you want two different screens (not two different sections on the same screen). Whenever you want to change the view from the current one to another, just tell the navigation controller to push it on the stack:
[self.navigationController pushViewController:viewBoards animated:YES];
The default navigation view controller gives you a root view controller with a navigation view controller in it. It also gives you one view controller called MainWindow. Just add as many copies of MainWindow as you need to get your functionality.
I have been in the process of learning to build iPhone applications for the last two weeks. I've gotten through a fair amount of content, and now I'm trying to create a modal pop up with presentModalView.
I can can successfully create and slide up a view, but I notice that modal views don't provide you with a default navigation bar at the top of the window, which makes sense for flexibility I guess. Most modal views I've seen have a "Cancel" and a "Done" or "Save" button as navigationItems on what looks to be a UINavigationController. My thought then was just to instantiate a navigation controller and push the single view onto the view controller stack, and presentModalView:navController.view ...
Because the view is relatively complex, I was trying to lay out both the UINavigationController, with the bar buttons, and the view I was hoping to push onto the stack in a single xib -- no matter what I try, I can't seem to get the linkages correct. Can you even do this? Or should I create a separate class/xib for the view I'm going to be pushing onto the navigation controller? Seems like a lot of classes and files for one screen, so my feeling is I must be missing something.
At this point, I could have done it programmatically about an hour and a half ago... however, this is a real nag, since IB seems GREAT for some things. Anyone have an experience with a situation like this?
Thanks,
Josh
If you're not going to use this new XIB for navigation, there's no point in making a navigation controller.
In interface builder, simply drag a UINavigationBar to the top of your view, and add a "Done" Button. Now, add an IBAction to the done button to dismiss the view controller. Your ViewController code for the dismiss IBAction should look something like this:
-(IBAction)dismiss {
//Any logic before dismissing the modal view
[super dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES];
}
