I have a simple site with a playlist-driven flash movie player.
the site is NOT a facebook app.
when a user clicks a video to watch from the playlist, that video's title, description, and thumbnail are registered in javascript variables.
the site also has a facebook button for sharing. If the user hits the fb share button while video_123 is playing then the video_123-info should show up when the share posts to the user's fb wall.
the only problem is that the http://www.facebook.com/dialog/feed seems to require a app_id, but my site is not a fb app.
any suggestions please?
thanks.
You should have application to use Dialogs.
Just create an application configure it pointing to your site (without configuring application canvas) and use Feed Dialog
Update:
If you must not create application for any reasons the only option for you is to use Facebook Share button (which is deprecated) see "Creating Your Own Share URL" section...
Update 2:
Share button is deprecated and it's documentation is no longer available (link above redirects to documentation of Feed Dialog, old page on web-archive)

I have a facebook app which can only display content inside of a page tab app because it needs to know the page id to know which content to display.
My app needs to have the "invite friends" functionality and was created on the 2.4 API version, so I had to define my app as a game.
The problem is :
when I share something from a facebook page tab app, there's a "play" link on my publication and that link redirects to the app, not the page tab app.
I couldn't find any information to know where to redirect the user.
Can I disable this link?
Or configure it to redirect the user to the page tab app?
Or can I have the "invite friends" functionality in any other category than game in the 2.4 API?
I use the facebook JS SDK to share :
FB.ui(
{
method: 'share',
href: $(this).attr('href'),
},
function(response){});
Thanks for your answers and advices.
I got this answer from a facebook comunity group :
" Your app needs to be a game and have a canvas implementation, if you want to use invitable_friends. It needs to be playable on canvas, without redirecting anywhere else first. If that is not the case, or your app is not really a game – then you can not use it.
Possible alternatives are listed here: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/apps/faq#friend_invite "
I'm creating a site that has images and video behind a login. I'd like the user to be able to share an asset but the can't share the url since you have to be logged in to see it. I know I can create an app that has the user connect their facebook to my site that will in turn allow the to post the asset directly to their page saving it to their photo and video albums.
Problems is, I can't quite figure out how to do it. I have the Facebook Dev documentation pulled up: Post
However, I can't figure out how to add a "post to facebook" button that would allow the user to connect and share the asset without requiring a URL to the item itself.
Does anyone know of a tutorial or a great resource to get me started?
If you can get your image directory to be accessible outside of your secure area you can use the Facebook sharer url. You will only have to share the url of the created image not a url to any actual page.
This is the link your share button would go to:
https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=http://zef.me/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/funny-cat.jpg
Example for building link or button:
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u={url to image}" target="_blank">
Share on Facebook
</a>
I don't have 10 reputation points yet, so can't embed image, sorry. Please see the image that can help clarify, right away, what's wrong: http://i.stack.imgur.com/b6BbO.png
I am having issues integrating Facebook buttons on my site. I have created a FB app to use with the integration - my like button (see http://soundsviral.com/2014/02/13/tennis-court-by-lorde-45/) is working just like I want it to. However, the share button next to it returns a story like you see above. The real disconcerting piece is that the link for the "Sounds Viral" name (which is the name of the app here, not the site) links to the app itself, which I don't want users to visit at all.) How can I change this URL to be my homepage (or the link in the post below, if that's preferable?)
I also which I could change "link" here to be "song", which is a supported og:type and is in use for my "like" button. However, for the "share" button, it just says "link". But that's less important to me than the actual URL in the story.
Thanks for any ideas!
The solution is to set your facebook app to be a website app that directs facebook users to your website.
To do this:
go to you app page
go to Settings
click Add Platform button
Select Website option
Enter URL of your website and save
I want a Like button on my web site that Likes my Facebook profile (rather than my web page), so that when a user clicks it they subscribe to my Facebook posts.
I've created the Like button using the tool at https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/
Further down that page there is an FAQ entry:
Can I link the Like button to my Facebook page?
Yes. Simply specify the URL of your Facebook page in the href
parameter of the button.
So, I've edited the href parameter to point to my Facebook page. eg:
https://www.facebook.com/myfacebookid
When a user clicks the Like button it has the desired effect. The user ends up having Liked my Facebook page. This is easily verified by the user going to my Facebook profile and checking that the Like button has changed to Liked.
But. When the user clicks the Like button, and entry appears in their News Feed with a generic Facebook description. ie:
Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and
others who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to
keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, post links
and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.
I don't want a generic post about Facebook to appear. I want the description to relate to my Facebook account and/or web site.
Normally, I could modify this behavior with the Opengraph og: description tag, but as the page in the href is a Facebook page and not my own, I can't control the Opengraph tags.
I'm pretty sure that this was working okay before I enabled timeline for my account, so maybe this is a timeline bug?
So, how do I add a Like button which a) Likes my Facebook profile rather than one of my own web pages, and b) Posts a description of my Facebook profile rather than give a generic Facbook description?
Are all your fields in the info part of your page filled in, and/or completed? I just tested your theory and it seemed to work as expected, only thing is I know all fields in "info" are filled it. Give that a try.
This may happen if you have filled invalid/incomplete/wrong og tags in past and later changed them. Facebook's cache creates problem sometime.
Try putting all the entries (i.e. all og tags) and then debug them here http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug. This debugger gives a detailed info about the url with og tags and also clears the cache for you.
This should solve the problem.
You have 3 important fields that used on page opengraph: Name,Description,Profile Image.
They are used when some one post your link on Facebook, or Google or some else web service that handle opengraph.
Actually, the suggested answers currently do not work and there is an open bug / ticket on Facebook for it. Up to now, there's no fix.
The problem is that you can not use simply https://www.facebook.com/myfacebookid. You should copy and paste the exact page URL. If you have a low number of likes it would look something like https://www.facebook.com/pages/[YourPageName]/[Your page Id]/, and this is the URL that you should use at this point.
If it does not work, try also https://www.facebook.com/[YourPageName]/[Your page Id]/.
In short, copy-paste the URL, do not type it manually.
Afternoon,
I have a facebook application that i have added to a facebook fan page, this application has an URL like http://facebook.com/fanPage?sk=app_id. Now i if copy this link and try and share it on the facebook fan page it uses the description/image from the page and not from the application like it want.
Is there any way to change this? The correct meta tags are in place.
Peter
yes there is a way, but not directly. facebook always fetches the meta tags of the top page, as your app runs in an iframe its not fetched.
but you can submit a wallpost (as user or as a fanpage) via the api and give alle information you want. (like image, video, description, title, ....)
see http://www.fbrell.com/fb.ui/feed for an example.
An other variant:
You add a canvas app beside your facebook app. (see the app settings) on this page you add the meta tags for the wallposts, and a javascript which redirects to the fanpage like
top.location.href = 'http://www.facebook.com/mypage?sk=app_id'
when ever you want to share you use the canvas app url. Facebooks greper ignores the javascript redirects but read the meta tags. A user clicking the wallpost is automaticly redirected to the fanpage - tab.
