Eclipse working set is missing - eclipse

My Eclipse crashed, and a working set which I'd just spent an hour setting up is now missing.
But when I try and create a new working set with the same name, it says "A working set with that name already exists."
So if it exists, where is it? I can't find it in my workspace...
If it doesn't exist, why can't I create a new one of the same name?
I've tried refreshing my workspace (F5), and running ./eclipse -clean - no joy.

A little hack solved it :)
(Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers, Version: Indigo Service Release 1)
Choose a project, right click on it.
Assign Working Sets...
In Working Set Assignments window: uncheck the checkbox called "Show only Package Explorer working sets" ... and voila: there is the disappeared working set.
Check that working set and Click "OK" -> Working set will appear in Package Explorer.

Another possibility is to click the arrow pointing down (View Menu), select top level element and then choose Working sets.

Neither of the above answers worked for me on STS 3.4.2. I kept getting the error "workspace of that name already exists" when I tried to create a specific name although I could not see it in the package viewer.
I found this file that contains references to the named workspaces:
<workspace dir>/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.ui.workbench/workingsets.xml
I noticed that the missing workspace had a
editPageId=org.springframework.ide.eclipse.ui.springWorkingSetPage
whereas the ones I could see were:
editPageId=org.eclipse.jdt.ui.JavaWorkingSetPage
So, my 'missing' working set would only show up in the spring package viewer. User error - but eclipse did not help find it...
At this point one can either rename/delete the spring workspace, then add it to the package workspace.

In my case I had to:
Right click on a project > "Assign Working Sets..."
"Configure Package Explorer working sets..."
Select the missing working sets and click OK
Et voilĂ !

I solved my problem by closing then reopening Navigator view.

Thanks all for the hints.
While they didn't exactly work as it did for some of you, here's what worked for me (using Eclipse Juno):
File -> Import -> Existing Projects into Workspace -> Select the directory from where to import your project(s) -> Finish.
Not sure what the specific cause was, though it happened when my machine crashed.

Eclipse opens old versions of my project

When opening Eclipse the project version is not the current one(it automatically opens the very beginning version of the project, not the current files on my drive).
I tried modifying the refresh settings in Preferences->Workspace, no luck. Also, when I right click->Refresh the project nothing happens.
I am using the last version of Eclipse Luna and the PyDev perspective.
have you tried go File then Switch Workspace e selected the right one? (even if ther is only one)
Some time it happend to me, maybe when i have eclipse opened and i click again on the eclipse startup app it ask me "load new workspace..." and it messup all
Try to look that its clearly the Workspace you would to use.
Do you have different Workspaces?
Try to check the location of the project.
Right-click on the project in Package Explorer and select "Properties"
Select "Resources" on right side and check the location.
If the location is wrong, try to import the right one using method as follows:
Right-click in Package Explorer and select "Import"
Select General->Existing Projects into Workspace and import the project.

How to delete non-exist project from Eclipse

I have a non-exist project which I am unable to remove from Eclipse. I am just checking if there is any other way to remove it.
Process of deleting project I am using:
Selecting project -> right click -> select delete -> follow the wizards
Result: a fatal error occured while performing the refactoring
found-problem client-target does not exist anymore
VinyJones answer did not work for me, since there was no corresponding metadata for the non-existant project. The solution for me was to drag the non-existing project to an other working set. After dragging it disappeared.
You may try this :
Close your workspace :
Delete the dir client-target from <workspaceDir>\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.resources\.projects
Open your workspace
And should be good
none of the above worked for me but this solution worked (was really a ghost project)
Shut down Eclipse
Open <workspace>/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.ui.workbench/workingsets.xml
Find the faulty tag and remove it
Start Eclipse
For me neither solution worked.
I'd to go to "Select working set" then select "Windows working sets".
The project then appeared without working set and I was finally able to delete them.
Running Eclipse with the -clean command line parameter works also.
I found all the answers here to be a little too elaborate and/or risky. So I closed eclipse (actually I had to force delete its sad, broken husk from Task Manager) then started it again.
Then I was able to right-click delete the packages from the package explorer.
Sounds like the solutions here are red/black on the roulette wheel. Maybe one of them will work for somebody? I miss .NET!

Failed to create the part's controls in Eclipse with Salesforce

I have Eclipse Juno and Force.com IDE. When I try to create new classes they always show: failed to create the part's controls. It worked for the first time, but now they always show this. Same happens if I create them inside the force.com platform.
Error details:
org.eclipse.core.runtime.AssertionFailedException: assertion failed:
at org.eclipse.core.runtime.Assert.isTrue(Assert.java:110)
etc ...
I would appreciate all help.
I had the same error. I fixed it by switching the eclipse workspace. Go to menu File->Switch Workspace->Other, and then select the same workspace you were working with. Eclipse will restart and you should not get the error.
I faced the same issue my default editor for JSP was Web page editor. Which I changed to JSP editor and everything is fine.
PS: To change to JSP editor
Right click on JSP page -->open with jsp .
I got the "failed to create the part's controls" error one day when I opened Eclipse and tried to view a java file I had been working on. When I opened the file I needed, it showed a red X and NullPointerException instead of the code. The error log mentioned "event loop exception" for some reason.
I restarted Eclipse, and the error was still there. I cleaned the project, updated the project, deleted and re-imported the project, deleted and re-imported the file, and the error still was there. As a last resort, I restarted Eclipse again and then the file was fine. So one of the clean/update/delete/import steps worked but I don't know which one.
Use eclipse -clean from command prompt to solve this problem.
I solved my problem like this:
This problem occur because of in eclipse default editor is not able to identify extension of that file. If you right click on file and open it with respective text editor ,problem will be solved
In ecllipse, every file types has some associated default formats and one of the default format set to the particular file type.
You can see this in General -> Editors -> File Associations-
This issue generally occurs when we open any file in the format which is not the default format of the particular types.
I got same issue when I opened one of the Java file in text format in ecllipse and then I started getting the same issue. After research, I observed that AspectJ/Java Editor was setting as default. After reset it to Java Editor, the problem got resolved.
Steps :
1. General -> Editors -> File Associations-
2. Select the content type and choose the default format for it.
3. Restart the ecllipse.
In general, it is some default file format that set in ecllipse causing the same issue.
in my case problem was that the server was resin and I didn't have the resin server extension installed
I solved the problem.
(1)Open the filed with TXT.
(2)Search and Delete the underline between number like:
int a = 10_000;
It works when i compile and run as others used, but it will fail if i save and open again.
I also had for the same problem and fixed it by updating eclipse. Help > Check for Updates.
This worked for me---->
Right click on pom.xml-->open with-->xml editor
Had a similar stacktrace on failed to create the part's controls while trying to open Git repositories view in Git perspective.
My case (cause) is different since I was migrating an Eclipse workspace from an Ubuntu VM to Windows.
Many thing were copied like projects, .git folders, or also .metadata Eclipse folder.
Tried with no success:
uninstall all egit component (installation details, then, install new software
restart eclipse -clean
reset Git repository perspective
I searched and found this invalid UNIX : separator in .metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.runtime\.settings\org.eclipse.egit.core.prefs file.
GitRepositoriesView.GitDirectories=/path1/.git\:/path2/.git
Here, the : is invalid path separator on Windows.
I simply removed the value in this line, saved file, and restarted Eclipse:
GitRepositoriesView.GitDirectories=
(alternative: if needed, try to migrate those linux paths to their Windows equivalent too)
Git repositories view is back.

Eclipse: All my projects disappeared from Project Explorer

It seems like all my projects (except one) disappeared from the view Project Explorer.
I'm using Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers.
Version: Helios Service Release 2
Build id: 20110218-0911
Note: all the projects are present on the file system.
How to bring them back? Any ideas?
This happened to me. I'm still not sure how, but the reason was that my workspace meta data had become corrupted, probably due to Eclipse being improperly shutdown. The solution, as explained here, is to:
Note, steps 2 & 3 are optional if Eclipse isn't crashing, but just not showing any projects.
Close Eclipse.
cd /home/user/workspace/.metadata/.plugins
mv org.eclipse.core.resources org.eclipse.core.resources_bak
Start Eclipse
Do File->Import
General->Existing Projects into Workspace
Click the "Select root directory" field and browse to each subfolder in your workspace folder, and import.
For me, this was very tedious, since I had several dozen projects in my workspace, but it's the only solution I found short of restoring my entire workspace from a backup.
Edit: This answer is now quite old, and better solutions may now exist. Although I haven't had need to try it, I recommend attempting #antonagestam's solution first, as others have suggested it may be faster and more effective.
Edit: Since it's fairly simple, I'd recommend trying antonagestam's solution first. However, this problem recently re-occurred for me, and that solution did not work in my case. But neither did it interfere with this solution.
I had the same problem in Aptana, all of a sudden my projects were gone. Solved it by going to the drop-down menu in Project Explorer and going Top Level Elements -> Projects.
Go to
File --> Import --> General --> Existing Project into Workspace
Then,
In Root Directory Enter the workspace path where all your projects saved & click refresh as below
And Click Finish
I was having the same problem for Android projects in Eclipse. This link was very helpful in restoring the missing projects.
Go to 'File->Import->General->From Existing Project'.
Select the root folder to the Workspace.
Click on the 'Refresh' button.
Select the required projects and click 'Finish' button.
I had the same problem in Luna, Suddenly my projects were gone in start-up.
I solved this by select Deselect working set option in the drop-down menu in Project Explorer.
Note: I post this answer even this is not a right answer for this question.
Since I search for Luna and came here,while trying with discussed things I was find this solution. This may help others.
Click on Windows > Open Perspectives > java
, Press Ok. Project Explore will come back on screen..
My solution is
open view menu and select "Top Level Elements" and set "Projects"
If any of the previous methods don't work for you then delete your old workspace, create a new workspace and put it by default. You can do this by launching Eclipse twice - the second time it asks you for the workspace ;). Then re-import all your projects there and say "problem, goodbye".
Mona is correct - Make sure that you have the task list set to show ALL as the image shows. Click the arrow to the left of the project if you want to re-factor your filter. Reset your perspective if you do not see the task list.
Today 22-03-2016, I check again this question and using ECLIPSE MARS I solved with:
Having Eclipse opened, go on FILE -> RESTART
Go on same workspace and I have all project on "PROJECT EXPLORER"
Sometime also this operation, will solve (Clicking on Projects dor see all project!!)
So Other solution is:
if you use the "Task List" view of Eclipse, it will sometimes try to hide files or projects that it thinks are not associated with a given task (i.e. any file that was not opened while you had a certain task selected as the current task). If you want Eclipse to stop hiding files
in that case, you can just delete all tasks.
Or you may also restart your eclipse and by just closing the project and then opening it again (from the right mouse click context menu) the files will be restored.
If that doesnt get your projects back then check the "filters option" (Click on right corner of Project Explorer tab and open context menu. Select Filters option from menu) and make sure that your projects type isnt checked.
you should check the active Working Set - make sure it is off.
When this happened to me I had somehow set the Project Explorer to only display Working Sets. I had none, so nothing was displayed.
To fix it, I went to the Project Explorer View Menu (next to the Minimize and Maximize icons in the Project Explorer), Top Level Elements -> Projects.
Thanks to #antonagestam for pointing me in the right direction.
It seems it happens to us all. I was happily hacking away at javascript, nowhere near all the nasty hibernate java stuff, and boom, "cant find org.jboss.logging.BasicLoging".
I havent touched anything!.
After an hour or so of trying to make that appear, restarting servers, mysql, eclipse, adding jars that weren't needed before,I deployed the fix all solution, the off button.
Then zap, no project.
(I am still none the wiser as to why calling Configuration() should now require jboss-logging...jar, maybe I needed it all along for when bad things happen)
My input is
use git, keep as little of your stuff in the eclipse workspace area as possible. Then just import project from existing git repo when eclipse loses it's marbles.
I also lost my server config. it's there but eclipse insists there no server config stuff and bombs. So make another one, I've expressed my feelings about eclipse in my new server name, and copy your apache xml configs (workspace/Servers/I_Love_Eclipse) over from the original perfectly good directory.
Not sure how/why, but this happened to me once when I added a task to Mylyn. Seemed that mylyn was filtering my projects. When I deleted the task they all came back.
None of the answers provided here worked for me. My Enterprise Explorer was completely grey and I couldn't even import or reimport projects.
In my .metadata.log I saw this error:
assertion failed: working set with same name already registered
So I deleted these file:
.metadata.plugins\org.eclipse.ui.workbench\workingsets.xml
Now I can see all my projects. I didn't have to add them back again.
I found a solution that worked better for me. Under my home folder I found a workspace/.metadata folder. I copied this folder into my eclipse workspace, replacing the .metadata folder that had been there. When I started Eclipse everything was back to the way I had left it - all projects present, all open files were still open, etc. Just like nothing had happened! I'm using Neon.
As a preliminary (before reimporting everything), here is a solution to recover working sets in which project were (if any).
I had more than 100 projects and each was in one of 14 working sets.
If your top level elements changes (accidentaly or not if it is a bug) from "Working set" to "Projects", you only see projects that are NOT in a working set, and if, as I do, you don't have any projects outside a working set, you think all is lost because you cannot see anything (blank package explorer).
So the solution is now obvious: click on the top left small white triangle MENU, than select "Top level elements", than select "Working sets".
You also have the possibility to rearrange the working sets list items.
Hope it helps
Unfortunatly the working sets were empty after the recovery, but at least I
recovered their names.
Config: Eclipse Oxygen.2 Release (4.7.2) with Java 1.8 on Windows 10.
Got this issue on returning to an Eclipse project on a VM after leaving it untouched for maybe a couple of weeks.
I started to apply the accepted answer, but when I got to the step of renaming the folder and had exited Eclipse, I saw there was an instance of Eclipse still running. I realized Windows had for some reason started a second instance of Eclipse when I hit the taskbar button. The second instance had been unable to access the workspace while the first instance was using it.
Once I undid my folder rename, and closed and restarted the original instance of Eclipse, I was able to use File->Switch Workspace to get my normal workspace back.
Solution that Cerin provide, importing each time that this problem happens, could be boring.
So I've implemented a script that control if workspace setting exits: if not, restore it to default.
I have an eclipse shortcut icon on the top panel that execute:
/opt/eclipse/checkWorkspace && /opt/eclipse/eclipse
Script checkWorkspace is the seguent:
#!/bin/bash
ECLIPSE_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/eclipse/configuration"
ECLIPSE_CONFIG_FILE="config.ini"
ECLIPSE_CONFIG_SETTING="osgi.instance.area.default"
DEFAULT_WORKSPACE_PATH="#user.home/workspace"
ECLIPSE_LOG="/var/log/eclipse.log"
cd ${ECLIPSE_CONFIG_PATH}
function sedeasy {
sed -i "s/$(echo $1 | sed -e 's/\([[\/.*]\|\]\)/\\&/g')/$(echo $2 | sed -e 's/[\/&]/\\&/g')/g" $3
}
WORKSPACE_EXISTS=$(cat ${ECLIPSE_CONFIG_FILE} | grep ${ECLIPSE_CONFIG_SETTING})
# If workspace setting doesn't exists
if [ -z "$WORKSPACE_EXISTS" ]; then
echo "worskspace setting not exists, resetting to default." >> ${ECLIPSE_LOG}
newConf=${ECLIPSE_CONFIG_SETTING}"="${DEFAULT_WORKSPACE_PATH}
echo ${newConf} >> ${ECLIPSE_CONFIG_FILE}
else
# if setting exist but it is empty
vals=(${WORKSPACE_EXISTS//=/ })
length=$(echo ${#vals[#]})
if [ "${length}" -lt 2 ]; then
newConf=${ECLIPSE_CONFIG_SETTING}"="${DEFAULT_WORKSPACE_PATH}
confToReplace=$(echo ${vals[0]})
sedeasy ${confToReplace} ${newConf} ${ECLIPSE_CONFIG_FILE}
echo "worskspace exists but is empty, resetting to default." >> ${ECLIPSE_LOG}
else
echo "Worskspace already set:" "${vals[1]}"

Maybe could be semplified, but works.
I tried many solutions. I found mine in the drop down menu of the Entreprise Explorer:
- Deleting org.eclipse.core.resources has no effect.
- "Top Level Elements -> Projects" was already checked for me; swtiching with Documents has no effect.
- Selecting all extensions in the filter option of the drop down menu has no effect at first sight, maybe it solve part of the problem.
The solution come from "Unselecting documents" (third choice in the Entreprise Explorer drop down menu). I think that choice reset the filtering of documents displayed in the Explorer.
Hope it'll helps
JN Gerbaux
Tedious but it worked for me (Kepler):
Using the OS zip utility, zip everything below the project workspace folder to a zip file, to be placed in a separate directory (will use c:\tmp\workspace.zip as an example).
Unzip workspace.zip to the c:\tmp directory. Assume there's a project folder called Project1
a. Ensure all the files in Project1 have Full Control permissions for Everyone or at least 777 permissions.
Remove all the project folders in the Eclipse workspace.
Recreate each project one by one according to its original type (Java, Dynamic Web, etc.). (Will use Project1 as an example.) Do not add anything.
In Eclipse, do File -> Import -> File System. Then select c:\tmp\Project1 as a source
Select the workspace Project1 as a destination. Do not overwrite any file.
In Eclipse, refresh the project and test it. It should work.
Also had this Problem.
My Solution was to uncheck the Box PyDev: Closed Projects, even if those hidden Projects are PHP and NOT Python Projects. (Strange BUG in Eclipse/Aptana???)
Be aware that even "Closed Projects" (a Topic above Pydev closed projects) is also unchecked. So you have to uncheck both Settings.
this: eclipse shows only "open projects" in project explorer
All of my projects were closed and I had hid the closed projects in the settings.
So to open projects go to top right view menu, and uncheck Closed Projects option. Assuming it is checked already.
Do the following steps
File --> Import --> Existing Projects into Workspace
Select the root directory as ur old root folder
Finish.
Yahoo.. There is ur old projects again in ur project explorer
1) File > import > Existing projects into workspace
2) Choose your workspace folder
3) select all of your projects
4) finish
All are OK with above way !!!
File - Import - Existing projects into workspace - browse - choose your workspase - done!
If Eclipse was killed during a shutdown, the projects database may become corrupted (the project database is normally located in: workspace/.metadata/org.eclipse.core.resources/.root/1.tree).
A message like this will be logged in Workspace/.metadata/.log:
!MESSAGE Could not read metadata for '.../.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.root/.markers'.
The data is lost. You need to import your projects again (File->Import ->
General->Existing Projects into Workspace).
The list of projects that were in the workspace can still be seen in .metadata/org.eclipse.core.resources/.projects/.
Projects located outside the workspace will have a .location file with the path to the project.
I also had the same problem.
file>restart.
Projects and modules appeared after restarting the eclipse, but faced new error;
An internal error occurred during: "AppXray Indexing...". java.lang.NullPointerException.
So it's good to be on safe side, import the project again in a new workspace.
if you go to Quick Access and type in Projects you will get it your projects back.

Some projects cannot be imported because they already exist in the workspace error in Eclipse

I am trying to import a project that me and my co-worker have been working on.. and keep getting this error after I select-- "import" then "import existing project" then click archive file, and then I click next, and this error comes up:
Some projects cannot be imported because they already exist in the
workspace
Uncheck the "copy projects into workspace" checkbox, and then click "refresh" button, you will be able to import the project
go to .project file in your project and change the name of the project in name tag
It has just happened to me too. Finally I realized that the project was already open in my workspace but it was not visible because of the selected working set. You have just to deselect the active working set and all opened projects will become visible.
This usually happens when you change the project directory physically without first delete in Eclipse.
You can view and delete these hidden projects in the following view:
Window -> Show View -> Other -> General -> Navigator
Then simply just continue with the process of import existing project.
In my case, I copied one of the projects (say 'Project1') from the workspace and pasted it to the same workspace. After that I modified the name of the pasted project (say to 'Project2'). I could not see it in the repository.
The main reason was .project file from the new project still had:
<name>Project1</name> instead of <name>Project2</name>.
So, I did following things in order to get the issue fixed:
Cut and paste Project2 outside the workspace
Change .project file to have <name>Project2</name>
Try importing Project2 again.
It worked for me.
You may have a project with same name in your workspace. Try to refresh (file->refresh) your workspace after deleting the another one with same name.
A typical situation occurs when you want to re-import a deleted project.
Projects in the Eclipse workspace must be unique. Note though that the project name need not be the same as the directory/folder name of the project, so you can either delete any existing project with the same name or alternatively rename the existing projects.
You have one occult directory named ".metadata" in workspace directory. Close Eclipse, delete ".metadata" and open Eclipse. When eclipse ask you about workspace make sure that ".metadata" isn't in workspace directory and click "ok" button to select default workspace.
Maybe you get the same project name in your '.project' file,check it,if yes, rename another name.than import again
If you've arrived at this because you have cloned a git project into the existing workspace and now you want to promote that workspace to a full fledged project then you should use the 'Git Repositories' view -> select 'Working Directory' -> Import Projects -> Existing projects.
Check if you have configured Eclipse to show ALL the working set. I once encountered exactly the same problem and it turned out I accidentally imported the project into the Other Projects working set. And my Eclipse configuration didn't show that working set in the package explorer, which lead me to believe that the project was not imported yet.
Updated for #Mawg:
First, click the Select Working Set...:
Then, choose No Working Sets:
This will effectively disable the working set and show all projects.
Try to rename the value of <name> tag which inside ".project" file of your project.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<projectDescription>
<name>Rename this value</name>
<comment></comment>
<projects>
This will work for sure. Here you are just renaming your project.
EASIEST WAY: Right click on the project (folder that reads "MainActivity") go to Refactor -> Rename and you will get a text field allowing you to rename your project.
If you get an alert saying your project is out of sync with the filesystem press F5 (refresh) and try again.
Take a look in your workspace folder, you may have an old project there with the same name as the one you are importing (even though it's not being shown on eclipse).
When you delete a project on Eclipse, if you don't check the checkbox on the dialog, it just removes it from the view and doesn't delete the folder on the workspace directory.
In my case i had deleted the resources directory from my .metadata.plugins:
Go to your workspace
Enter .metadata.plugins
Delete : org.eclipse.core.resources directory
Another way I just found!
MOVE the project to some other folder and then import and if required copy to workspace
I had this issue when I deleted a project and tried to import the code again. Eclipse never really deleted the project and still held a reference to the project name/folder in the workspace. I had to created a new project with the same name and my code appeared as it was. I believe this only worked because the project path was never changed.
It was happened to me when
I delete project from eclipse Project Explorer and not checked the
remove content from disk.
Next time when I tried to import same project in workspace then got same problem.
To solve I just did FYI work that every kid can do :)
So How I solved it:
Cut Ctrl + x myProject folder from eclipse workspace to other location ie Desktop
Right Click Navigator (you can get it from Window > Show View > Navigator) and Refresh (it will prompt following dialog)
Just click Yes button and move your project folder back to eclipse workspace directory
Import again!
Now Rock 'n' Role
This warning means you just deleted project from navigator, but the project is present in the working set. Or else your working set has project with same name, so go to work-space directory and delete the project which has the same name and import again.
This worked for me.
File > New > Android Project > Create project from existing source
Location = the location of the project you want to import.
You will get a warning "An Eclipse project already exists in this directory.
Consider using File > Import > Existing Project instead." But you will be able to click "Next" and the project should in effect be imported.
In eclipse click file then select switch workspace then browse and select another folder. Now repeat the same process and this time there will be no error :)
I had a similar problem, I have the same repository I wanted to import twice. I renamed the existing project by right clicking on the project > refactor > rename then imported it again.
My problem was a little bit different.
For example, the project name (what I see) was FooProject and in the imported project, I was looking for the FooProject but I could not. However, Eclipse does not let me import that project because he claims that it is already imported. And then, I have looked at the .project file of the project and I have seen that the actual name of the project was not what I see (FooProject).
The conclusion;
The name of the project (what you see in Eclipse) may be different than the actual name of the project (what maven see). Because of this reason. Please be sure that they are the same name by checking .project file of the project.
Nothing about could not solve my situation. This is how I solved.
Close the IDE
Remove the same name project form workspace
Start the IDE
Clean all project (not sure this helped)
File > Import > Existing Project
click refresh button
import project
Done..
At least on Eclipse Juno, you can toggle on Advanced. Then select [groupid].[artifactid] from the Name Template dropdown. That should make your project uniquely named. (If you keep multiple versions of a given artifact, you can select [groupid].[artifactid].[version] instead). Be sure to click the Refresh button so the changes are visible. Wash, rinse, repeat as needed.
delete it from eclipse......u might have closed the project in eclipse by "(Rightclick)-->close project".....so even if you delete this project from workspace folder....it stays there in eclipse IDE as closed project.....you should delete it from Eclipse IDE...!!!
I have a slightly different situation whereby my eclipse stops responding and I have had to kill the session. After restarting Juno, then the particular project I was working on disappeared although .project file exists. Trying to import back into Eclipse would yield the same "Some projects cannot be imported .." or "A project with this name already exists" if trying to create a new project.
In the end, since I was using Working Sets, I managed to find this file .metadata.plugins\org.eclipse.ui.workbench\workingsets.xml. Manually added the missing entry and restarted eclipse and voila, it came back.
I had the same error because there was one more project under svn in workspace but with another name. So I've removed it.
This is what i have noticed for the above issue :- If the checkout folder (folder where your pom project resides) is same as the eclipse workspace folder then i am getting this issue
SOLUTION
when i used a separate workspace folder for importing the project, eclipse did worked smoothly :)
In case you are using Maven, make sure that your artifactId in pom.xml does not have the same name as any existing project name in your Eclipse project explorer.
