application flow in iphone program - iphone

I am making a application for the iphone and i am using window based application and i am doing this:
#importing all UIViewController class in the appDelegate class.
creating the object for accessing the variables and function and I am controlling all
action,event and controls from the appDelegate class.
I want to ask that is this right approach. I dont want to use view based application, I want to use UIViewController class just only controllers display.
If this is not a good approach for making the application tell me the good process for doing this.

You should also read up on the iPhone-programming-basics, you will find a lot of nice tutorials and articles with a quick Google-search for "iPhone programming".

You could just create a singleton that holds the data and methods you want to share and access it from any view controller you want. Conceptually, it's not much different then what you are doing with the appDelegate class but it is better so that you don't clutter up the app delegate.

How to tell your viewController to update and pass it an object with the update specifics?

I have a general working knowledge of object-oriented programming and I'm currently trying to create an interactive novel program in Objective C using Xcode 4.2 with storyboarding.
I have a storyController class that instantiates the page objects and a viewController class that needs to display the pages. My fundamental question is the best approach for my storyController to tell the viewController to update it's text to display that of the new page object. My instinct tells me that my storyController needs to call a method on the viewController and pass it a page object. However, I'm not sure how to reference the view controller since it seems to be automatically created and linked by the storyboard (I don't see the viewController instantiated in the appDelegate).
I've read this post: http://www.iphonedevsdk.com/forum/iphone-sdk-development/54859-sharing-data-between-view-controllers-other-objects.html and it seems to address the issue. I could make a shared object on my appDelegate and use KVN or NSNotification to tell the view controller to check it.
I've also been reading about delegates and protocols as possible solutions.
So considering these potentially different approaches, which would be best to tell my viewController to update itself and pass it an object that contains the updates?
I would suggest looking at the UIPageViewController class, which probably will do a lot of the heavy lifting work for you, depending on the specifics of your app. This class is essentially a controller class that contains multiple viewControllers. Each managed viewController becomes essentially a "page" in your book.
Here is a tutorial using UIPageViewController.
If this approach won't work for your app, I'd still suggest using a separate viewController instance for each "page" of your book and handle the transition between the pages with segues.

How to get/set the rootViewController?

Now,I gonna Develop an App ,which wants to switch from many different Views irregularly,also the views need to load large resources,AKA,it's hard to manage memory.Are there any good solustion?
PS:I created a ViewController as RootViewController,and When a button was Touch,run the code as
"ViewController=newController"
.The problem came,The new View loaded wrong way,it rotate so that couldn't show in a correct way.
I google for the solution,some one said ,I should replace the rootViewController,just like that,
[UIApplication sharedApplication].delegate.window.rootViewController=newController;
But I can't get/set the rootViewController in other class though it's a singleton.
Why not having a class that handles all the view switches ?

Difference between AppDelegate.m and View Controller.m

Could anyone tell me when we use the AppDelegate.m and AppDelegate.h during iPhone programming? I have used only the ViewController.m and ViewController.h for basic learning. I just want to know when and why AppDelegate is used.
Both define classes, but the classes are used for different things. ViewController.h/m define a view controller class that manages a hierarchy of views -- basically, one screen of an application. You might have multiple screens that each have their own view controller.
AppDelegate.h/m define a class that manages the application overall. The app will create one instance of that class and send that object messages that let the delegate influence the app's behavior at well-defined times. For example, -application:didFinishLaunchingWithOptions: is sent when the app has finished launching and is ready to do something interesting. Take a look at the UIApplicationDelegate reference page for a list of messages that the app delegate can implement to modify the behavior of the application.
I would like to add the following to #Caleb's answer.
If care is not taken, the AppDelegate could easily become one of the most accessed objects in the application. I usually refrain from calling methods in the AppDelegate from any of my ViewControllers. Unless, something needs to be reported to the AppDelegate that would influence the behaviour of the whole application.
I keep my AppDelegate for the following:
initialization: whatever needs to be done on the very first launch (after an install or an update)
data migration from version to version (e.g. if you use CoreData and migrations)
configuration of objects linked via IBOutlets from MainWindow.xib
determining the initial orientation to launch in
saving uncommitted data / state prior to the application being terminated or entering background mode
registering for the Apple Push Notification Service and sending the device token to our server
opening one of the supported application URLs (e.g. maps://)

The view-controller. h/m is responsible of controlling the connection between your model and your view (more on MVC here).
AppDelegate. h/m is responsible for the life-cycle of your application. What to do when the user press the home button and exit your app, what to do when the app enter background. Things like this.

How best to structure my code for a basic iPhone table/navigation database app?

Having worked through some tutorials on some basics via the iPhone, I'm struggling to determine how best to structure my code. The book I'm using points out things like "you wouldn't normally put this here, but for expediency...". Well, I'd like to know what one would "normally" do.
My application is somewhat simple - there is a table view showing a list of objects and one can add, remove, edit these objects (I plan to provide a more sophisticated organizational scheme later, but I'm keeping it simple to get something working).
So, I have a RootViewController that extends UITableViewController. When the "add" button is clicked I push a subclass of UIViewController onto the stack (this class is the "add/edit" form for my objects). I have a simple data structure-style class to hold the fields of the objects.
The apps like this in the book basically put an array inside the RootViewController and use a reference to the model class to represent the "object being edited". Basically, the models are all wrapped up in the view controllers. This seems wrong.
So, my question is: where do the models and the objects for managing them normally live?
And, does the answer to this depend on how I'm storing my objects? I have not done much with CoreData, though my plan was to use it for persistence of my objects. Will the hooks and boilerplate provided by XCode make this a nonissue?

First of all you are right about your intuition that it seems wrong. As you described the model is stored in the view controllers. That is a bad idea. By doing so you are violating the model-view-controller paradigm, which makes your code hard to maintain.
So what you need to do now is get your model in a separate object or tree of objects or even better use CoreData, which is also great in terms of memory management.
As you want to use CoreData you should have a look at the UIFetchedResultsController class which you will use to obtain the objects from the managedObjectContext which will be your model.
What you would do in your table view - detail edit example is:
Fetch the contents of the table view using a fetch request and setting it on the NSFetchedResultsController you hold as an instance variable in the rootViewController
Set this rootViewController as the delegate of that NSFetchedResultsController
If an item is checked or the add button is pressed push your detail view controller on the stack, pass the object to be edited with it, or nil if it is a new object. Also pass the managedObjectContext to the detailViewController. Update or create the object.
Implement the delegate methods of NSFetchedResultsController in your rootViewController and there you reload the contents of the table when necessary.
What you gain is a nice and clear separation of model (CoreData's managedObjectContext) the controller (rootViewController and detailViewController) and you views. If you now edit an entry by using the detail view, your rootViewController is notified via your NSFetchedResultsController and automatically updated. What you also gain is that you do not have a strong reference among the viewControllers in your application.
Btw, you set up your CoreData stuff in the application's delegate. There is a lot of boilerplate code around in Xcode and on the ADC. Check out the Recipies app [1] in which this approach I just descriped is used. There are also some videos about CoreData on Apple's developers site.

Application Design and AppDelegate

I am developing an iPhone app for some sweet undergrad research I've been working on. Sadly, my school doesn't offer software engineering / design classes so when it comes to questions of best practices in OO Design, I do a lot of reading.
My Dilemma:
My application loads a view (v1) where, upon user's button click, v1's controller class executes an action method. This action method should fill an array with objects. After that, the user will either execute the action again or click a different tab to load another view. Other views in the application will use the array that v1 populated.
So, where should this shared array be declared? Right now, it's in the AppDelegate class from when I was testing features without a GUI. Should I grab the AppDelegate singleton and add items to it in the v1ViewController? Should it be declared as static?

Follow-up Question: When interacting with a singleton, which is the better way to talk to it:

or
MySingleton *s = [MySingleton sharedInstance];

I guess what I'm wondering is, do you make the sharedInstance method call every time or do you define a pointer to the sharedInstance and then reference the pointer?
Using the app delegate to store data that's shared between views and view controllers is reasonable and appropriate.
In my apps, I view the app delegate as the controller part of MVC, with UIViews and view controllers all being part of the "view". I prefer to use a variant of MVC called Passive View that keeps the model and view parts of my app strictly segregated with only the controller connecting them.
I'm assuming that the array of objects you're storing is your app's model, so storing them on your app delegate makes sense. As Daniel D said, there's no need to make it static.
The app delegate is really the heart of your program. You create and initialize your model and views in your -applicationDidFinishLaunching: method and save your model data and view state in -applicationWillTerminate:. When your view controllers receive events that changes your model, you can call methods on your app delegate to make those changes.
You could store it in an ivar in the app delegate. You don't need to make it static since the app delegate is a singleton anyways (there's never more than 1 instance).
If the app delegate is getting a bit complicated, you can factor out the data storage into a separate model object or perhaps use Core Data.
