XML editing inside a Perl script - perl

I am trying to us the perl -pi -e to edit the a line in a xml file. If I run the perl -pi -e command from the command line it works fine, but once I put in my script and use the system command I get the error listed below:
su: invalid option -- i

You need to add quote marks around the argument you pass to -c.
At the moment you have -c perl and then -pi is taken as another argument to su not perl.

Running perl files from a text file

There're multiple perl scripts that is ran from CYGWIN terminal. An example is,
$ perl IdGeneratorTool.pl JSmith -i userInfo.adb -o JSmith.txt
The above is an example. Were based on input parameter JSmith, it reads a db file, generate an ID and output that to a text file.
Now these perl scripts running on the CYGWIN keeps growing and it's added to a text file like shown below,
$ perl IdGeneratorTool.pl JSmith -i userInfo.adb -o JSmith.txt
$ perl IdGeneratorTool.pl PTesk -i userInfo.adb -o PTesk.txt
$ perl IdGeneratorTool.pl CMorris -i userInfo.adb -o CMorris.txt
$ perl IdGeneratorTool.pl JLawrence -i userInfo.adb -o JLawrence.txt
$ perl IdGeneratorTool.pl TCruise -i userInfo.adb -o TCruise.txt
...
....
......
.......
.........
And the list keeps growing.
I would like to know whether there's a way to execute all these perl scripts which are in a text file in one go.
I'm new to perl and doesn't have much idea as to what are the options.
An ideal scenario might be, a tool where i can open this text file and click a execute button and then it executes all the scripts and output multiple *.txt files into the same directory.
Or maybe a simple perl script that can do it.
Put them into a file makeall (or whatever you want to call it.
Put as a first line #!/bin/bash into the file
In cygwin enter chmod +x makeall
in cygwin enter ./makeall
With this you've created a bash script which'll do all your calls of the perl script.
Another option would to just put all the user information into a csv file and read that one in order to call your script.
WAIT! Even easier!
Put into the makeall script this:

for user in \
JSmith \
PTesk \
CMorris \
JLawrence \
TCruise \
; do
perl IdGeneratorTool.pl "$user" -i userInfo.adb -o "$user".txt
done
Now you just need to add any additional user the same way I did for your examples.
Without seeing the source for IdGeneratorTool.pl it's hard to give any specific advice; but it is generally not hard to turn something like
do_stuff($ARGV[0], $opt_i, $opt_o);
into
while (<>) {
chomp;
$user, $adb, $outputfile = split('\t');
do_stuff($user, $adb, $outputfile);
}
to read the input from a tab-delimited file instead of from command-line arguments.
You can create text file with list of users (one per line) for example user_list.txt
JSmith
PTesk
CMorris
JLawrence
TCruise
Then create bash script process_list.sh with following content in same directory
#!/bin/bash
for user in `cat user_list.txt`
do
perl IdGeneratorTool.pl $user -i userInfo.adb -o ${user}.txt
done
Now make bash script executable chmod +x process_list.sh and it is ready for execution.
Once you need to add new user edit user_list.txt to add one more line into the file.

Perl Search and Replace Command Not Working When Called from Inside another Perl Script

I am a beginner with Perl. I am using the Below Perl Command To Search and Replace "/$" Sequence in my tcl Script. This works well When used on the linux Command Line directly.
perl -p -i -e 's/\/\$/\/\\\$/g' sed_list.tcl
I am calling to Call the above Perl One liner in another Perl script using System Command and only with " ` " Back Tick.
system(`perl -p -i -e 's/\/\$/\/\\\$/g' sed_list.tcl`);
`perl -p -i -e 's/\/\$/\/\\\$/g' sed_list.tcl`;
I am getting the Below error. Please Help With this issue.
Bareword found where operator expected at -e line 1, near "$/g"
(Missing operator before g?)
Final $ should be \$ or $name at -e line 1, within string
syntax error at -e line 1, near "s//$/"
Execution of -e aborted due to compilation errors.
I Dont Know if I Can use any other Separation Operator like % and # just like SED command but, When I used '%' operator for separation, I didn't see error but job is not done.

Some one here Suggested that I should Escape all Back Slashes while using System Command or calling another command using BackTicks from inside a perl script. But later they have deleted their answer. It worked for me. I would like to thank every one for taking effort and helping me out in solving my question.
Here is the correct working code.

or Use System function as shown Below

You can execute an external command by passing the command to a system function or by using backticks(``) operator. Please pass the command to the system() function as a string:
system(q{perl -p -i -e 's/\/\$/\/\\\$/g' sed_list.tcl})
or use backticks as:
`perl -p -i -e 's/\/\$/\/\\\$/g' sed_list_gen.tcl`

using slash in Perl Command

Below the command i want to run.
perl -pi -w -e 's//apps/LIVE/appl/xx/11.5.0//$XXTOP//g;' prog.txt
Here, source and replacement both have slashes in them.
How to handle this?

I tried with curly braces and tilde that was suggested.
perl -pi -w -e 's{apps/LIVE/appl/xx/11.5.0}{$XXTOP}g;' prog.txt
In this case, Dollar sign in giving issue, else it works fine..
Error:
Name "main::XXTOP" used only once: possible typo at -e line 1.
Use of uninitialized value at -e line 1, <> chunk 1.
Use of uninitialized value at -e line 1, <> chunk 2.
Use another delimiter:
perl -pi -w -e 's~/apps/LIVE/appl/xx/11.5.0/~$XXTOP/~g;' prog.txt
You could access environment variable thru %ENV, like:
perl -pi -w -e 's~/apps/LIVE/appl/xx/11.5.0/~$ENV{XXTOP}/~g;' prog.txt
Do you want the text $XXTOP to appear in the output. In which case escape the $ - {\$XXTOP}
perl -pi -w -e 's{apps/LIVE/appl/xx/11.5.0}{\$XXTOP}g;' prog.txt
Perl is thinking that $XXTOP is a Perl variable.
Of if you are want to expand an environment variable, use $ENV{$XXTOP}

I have a file with below contents:

I am using below perl command to just replace WHG_STATUS_SITEENTSEQCHAIN_20110901094550 with WHG_STATUS_SITEENTSEQCHAIN_20110901999999.dat in the section [TEMP.s_m_upd_salions_rqthk] But somehow its not giving me expected result. Even the WHG_STATUS_SITEENTSEQCHAIN_20110901094550 under section [TEMP.s_m_update_BUS_spec] is getting replaced.

There are a fair number of $ that should be escaped but aren't. It would be simpler if you used single quotes instead of double quotes. You were probably trying for:
perl -i -pe'
s{\$\$SRC_STAT_RN=.*}{\$\$SRC_STAT_RN=WHG_STATUS_SITEENTSEQCHAIN_20110901999999.dat}g;

What exactly is not working as you want? On my machine, after running your perl code, the file looks like:

Escaping whitespace within nested shell/perl scripts

I'm trying to run a perl script from within a bash script (I'll change this design later on, but for now, bear with me). The bash script receives the argument that it will run. The argument to the script is as follows:
test.sh "myscript.pl -g \"Some Example\" -n 1 -p 45"
within the bash script, I simple run the argument that was passed:
#!/bin/sh
$1
However, in my perl script the -g argument only gets "Some (that's with the quotes), instead of the Some Example. Even if I quote it, it cuts off because of the whitespace.
I tried escaping the whitespace, but it doesn't work... any ideas?
To run it as posted test.sh "myscript.pl -g \"Some Example\" -n 1 -p 45" do this:
#!/bin/bash
eval "$1"
This causes the $1 argument to be parsed by the shell so the individual words will be broken up and the quotes removed.
Or if you want you could remove the quotes and run test.sh myscript.pl -g "Some Example" -n 1 -p 45 if you changed your script to:
#!/bin/bash
"$#"
The "$#" gets replaced by all the arguments $1, $2, etc., as many as were passed in on the command line.
Quoting is normally handled by the parser, which isn't seeing them when you substitute the value of $1 in your script.
You may have more luck with:
#!/bin/sh
eval "$1"
which gives:
$ sh test.sh 'perl -le "for (#ARGV) { print; }" "hello world" bye'
hello world
bye
Note that simply forcing the shell to interpret the quoting with "$1" won't work because then it tries to treat the first argument (i.e., the entire command) as the name of the command to be executed. You need the pass through eval to get proper quoting and then re-parsing of the command.
This approach is (obviously?) dangerous and fraught with security risks.
I would suggest you name the perl script in a separate word, then you can quote the parameters when referring to them, and still easily extract the script name without needing the shell to split the words, which is the fundamental problem you have.
test.sh myscript.pl "-g \"Some Example\" -n 1 -p 45"
and then
#!/bin/sh
$1 "$2"
if you really have to do this (for whatever reason) why not just do:
sh test.sh "'Some Example' -n 1 -p 45"
in:
test.sh
RUN=myscript.pl
echo `$RUN $1
(there should be backticks ` before $RUN and after $1)
