Reading special characters from FoxPro using OLEDB - ado.net

I'm using the FoxPro OLEDB driver (VFPOLEDB.1) to connect to a DBF using ADO.NET. The problem I am having is that some characters don't come across correctly. For example the '²' character comes out as '_'.
I have tried issuing the SET ANSI OFF command, to no avail.
I have found that the DBF is codepage 850
Does anyone know what is going on?

Foxpro doesn't support UNICODE if that is what you appear to be getting. It only works with ASCII 0-255 character set. Codepage 850 I believe is MS-DOS. There is a CPConvert() (for code page conversion), but I don't know if that is associated with the OleDbProvider as a usable function.

It turns out that I had to add CodePage=850 to the connection string so that it matched the DBF's code page.

Teradata replacing hyphens with boxes in SQL Assistant?

I have been trying to load data from Teradata tables to Excel files but the problem I'm encountering is that of special characters getting replaced by boxes. As can be seen in the image below, some hyphens and Turkish characters are getting replaced by boxes.

The connection by default uses the ASCII character set and I tried to use the below code to translate the string to unicode (since I want to eventually use UTF-16 encoding):
TRANSLATE(_UNICODE "Column Name" USING UNICODE_TO_UNICODE_NFKD WITH ERROR).
I am not quite sure what exactly is the problem here. What could I be possibly doing wrong?

Windows code page 1252 able to handle non English Characters

We are in a situation where our program works on some machine and not on some others. We identified the problem as that of us using ANSI versions of GetTempPath; which fail in non English OSes. So far so good. However our code works on "some" computers and the results of a test app are inconsistent. It seems if the TEMP path has non english characters, say TEMP=E:/टेम्प, then on some computers GetTempPath returns E:/??? and then later attempting to open a file on that folder fails. Rightly so. Easy to fix - use unicode versions of the API.
But on some other computers it return the correct encoding, such that ultimately file opening succeeds.
I check the ACP on these computer - it is 1252. HOW IS 1252 able to encode non english characters?
It has become a topic of discussion - how was our program working all along? Such a bug should have been reported long ago etc.

Because codepage 1252 has various non-English characters in it. See the full character table on Wikipedia. Note that टे, म्, and प are NOT present in 1252, which is why they end up as ? when treated as ANSI.
Also, you should be using the Unicode version of API functions instead of the ANSI versions, then you wouldn't have this problem anymore.

What charset to use to store russian text into javascript files as an array

I am creating a coldfusion page, that takes language translation data stored in a table in my database, and makes static js files for each language pairing of english to ___ etc...
I am now starting to work on russian, I was able to get the other languages to work fine..
However, when it saves the file, all the text looks like question marks. Even when I run my translation app, the text for just that language looks like all ?????
I have tried writing it via cffile as utf-8 or ISO-8859-1 but neither seems to get it to display properly.
Any suggestions?
Have you tried ISO-8859-5? I believe it's the encoding that "should" be used for Russian.
By all means do use UTF-8 over any other encoding type. You need to make sure that:
your cfm templates were written to disk with UTF-8 encoding (notepad++ handles that nicely, and so does Eclipse or the new ColdFusion Builder)
your database was created with the proper codepage for nvarchar (and varchar) datatypes
your database connection handles UTF-8
How to go about the last two items depends on your database back-end. Coldfusion is quite agnostic in that regard, as it will happily use any jdbc driver that you may need.
When working in a multi-character set environment, character set conversion issues can occur and it can be difficult to determine where the conversion issue occurred.
There are two categories into which conversion issues can be placed. The first involves sending data in the wrong format to the client API. Although this cannot happen with Unicode APIs, it is possible with all other client APIs and results in garbage data.
The second category of issue involves a character that does not have an equivalent in the final character set, or in one of the intermediate character sets. In this case, a substitution character is used. This is called lossy conversion and can happen with any client API. You can avoid lossy conversions by configuring the database to use UTF-8 for the database character set.
The advantage of UTF-8 over any other encoding is that you can handle any number of languages in the same database / client.
I can't personally reproduce this problem at all. Is the ColdFusion template that is making the call itself UTF-8? (with or without a BOM it matters not for Russian). In any case UTF-8 is absolutely what you should be using. Make sure you get a UTF-8 compliant editor. Which is most things on Mac. On Windows you could use Scite or GVim.
The correct encoding to use in a .js file is whatever encoding the parent page is in. Whilst there are methods to serve JavaScript using a different encoding to the page including it, they don't work on all browsers.
So make sure your web page is being saved and served in an encoding that contains the Russian characters, and then save the .js file using the same encoding. That will be either:
ISO-8859-5. A single-byte encoding with Cyrillic in the high bytes, similar to Windows code page 1251. cp1251 will be the default encoding when you save in a text editor from a Russian install of Windows;
or UTF-8. A multi-byte encoding that contains every character. All modern websites should be using UTF-8.
(ISO-8859-1 is Western European and does not include any Cyrillic. It is similar to code page 1252, the default on a Western Windows install. It's of no use to you.)
So, best is to save both the cf template and the js file as UTF-8, and add <cfprocessingdirective pageencoding="utf-8"> if CF doesn't pick it up automatically.
If you can't control the encoding of the page that includes the script (for example because it's a third party), then you can't use any non-ASCII characters directly. You would have to use JavaScript string literal escapes instead:

when it saves to file it is "·ÐßãáÚ ¼ÞÙ ÚÐÛÕÝÔÐàì" so the charset is wrong
Looks like you've saved as cp1251 (ie. default codepage on a Russian machine) and then copied the file to a Western server where the default codepage is cp1252.
I also just found out that my text editor of choice, textpad, doesn't support unicode.
Yes, that was my reason for no longer using it too. EmEditor (commercial) and Notepad++ (open-source) are good replacements.

Character with encoding UTF8 has no equivalent in WIN1252

I am getting the following exception:
Caused by: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: ERROR: character 0xefbfbd of encoding "UTF8" has no equivalent in "WIN1252"
Is there a way to eradicate such characters, either via SQL or programmatically?
(SQL solution should be preferred).
I was thinking of connecting to the DB using WIN1252, but it will give the same problem.
I had a similar issue, and I solved by setting the encoding to UTF8 with \encoding UTF8 in the client before attempting an INSERT INTO foo (SELECT * from bar WHERE x=y);. My client was using WIN1252 encoding but the database was in UTF8, hence the error.

What do you do when you get this message? Do you import a file to Postgres? As devstuff said it is a BOM character. This is a character Windows writes as first to a text file, when it is saved in UTF8 encoding - it is invisible, 0-width character, so you'll not see it when opening it in a text editor.
Try to open this file in for example Notepad, save-as it in ANSI encoding and add (or replace similar) set client_encoding to 'WIN1252' line in your file.
Don't eridicate the characters, they're real and used for good reasons. Instead, eridicate Win1252.
I had a very similar issue. I had a linked server from SQL Server to a PostgreSQL database. Some data I had in the table I was selecting from using an openquery statement had some character that didn't have an equivalent in Win1252. The problem was that the System DSN entry (to be found under the ODBC Data Source Administrator) I had used for the connection was configured to use PostgreSQL ANSI(x64) rather than PostgreSQL Unicode(x64). Creating a new data source with the Unicode support and creating a new modified linked server and refernecing the new linked server in your openquery resolved the issue for me. Happy days.
That looks like the byte sequence 0xBD, 0xBF, 0xEF as a little-endian integer. This is the UTF8-encoded form of the Unicode byte-order-mark (BOM) character 0xFEFF.
I'm not sure what Postgre's normal behaviour is, but the BOM is normally used only for encoding detection at the beginning of an input stream, and is usually not returned as part of the result.
In any case, your exception is due to this code point not having a mapping in the Win1252 code page. This will occur with most other non-Latin characters too, such as those used in Asian scripts.
Can you change the database encoding to be UTF8 instead of 1252? This will allow your columns to contain almost any character.
I was able to get around it by using Postgres' substring function and selecting that instead:
select substring(comments from 1 for 200) from billing
The comment that the special character started each field was a great help in finally resolving it.
This problem appeared for us around 19/11/2016 with our old Access 97 app accessing a postgresql 9.1 DB.
This was solved by changing the driver to UNICODE instead of ANSI (see plang comment).
Here's what worked for me :
1 enable ad-hoc queries in sp_configure.
2 add ODBC DSN for your linked PostgreSQL server.
3 make sure you have both ANSI and Unicode (x64) drivers (try with both).
4 run query like this below - change UID, server ip, db name and password.
5 just keep the query in last line in postgreSQL format.

I have face this issue when my Windows 10 using Mandarin China as default language. This problem has occurred because I did try to import a database with UTF-8. Checking via psql and do "\l", it shows collate and cytpe is Mandarin China.
The solution, reset OS language back to US and re-install PostgreSQL. As the collate back to UTF-8, you can reset back your OS language again.

Toad unicode input problem

In toad, I can see unicode characters that are coming from oracle db. But when I click one of the fields in the data grid into the edit mode, the unicode characters are converted to meaningless symbols, but this is not the big issue.
While editing this field, the unicode characters are displayed correctly as I type. But as soon as I press enter and exit edit mode, they are converted to the nearest (most similar) non-unicode character. So I cannot type unicode characters on data grids. Copy & pasting one of the unicode characters also does not work.
How can I solve this?
Edit: I am using toad 9.0.0.160.
We never found a solution for the same problems with toad. In the end most people used Enterprise Manager to get around the issues. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Quest officially states, that they currently do not fully support Unicode, but they promise a full Unicode version of Toad in 2009: http://www.quest.com/public-sector/UTF8-for-Toad-for-Oracle.aspx
An excerpt from know issues with Toad 9.6:
Toad's data layer does not support UTF8 / Unicode data. Most non-ASCII characters will display as question marks in the data grid and should not produce any conversion errors except in Toad Reports. Toad Reports will produce errors and will not run on UTF8 / Unicode databases. It is therefore not advisable to edit non-ASCII Unicode data in Toad's data grids. Also, some users are still receiving "ORA-01026: multiple buffers of size > 4000 in the bind list" messages, which also seem to be related to Unicode data.
