Is there any way to obtain, or has someone already obtained and compiled documentation from MS Technet Library for offline use?
I know of the Visual Studio Help Downloader at codeplex https://vshd.codeplex.com/ and I am looking for something similar for the Technet Library.
The Library itself has an option to select articles for export however, it is very limited in number of pages to add per click. This means you have to drill down on every subject and add it to your selection. Not very usable, besides the examples state you should be able to download as pdf or html, but I only get the html option, which is annoyingly impractical.
Ideally I would like to have the complete offline documentation for a single top-level subject (e.g. "Scripting with Windows PowerShell" at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb978526.aspx). If possible, including an index/TOC.
I know of the built-in Get-Help, the books available etc. but the Technet Library has more detailed information available which I'm after. Any known method of downloading this in bulk would be greatly appreciated.
All my google search results seem to either point to the built in export funcion, or people reminiscing about the old offline Technet subscription.
Ok, its not great. But its better than the above... I know this is old. But I was looking for this. This is the best I found. So Ill leave my breadcrumbs for the next fool to stumble down this road. If someone else finds better, hopefully theyll continue to pass it on.

Taking TechNet Offline
When you start the process, it'll give you some instructions, and once you click "Start," you'll be shown the hierarchy of the entirety of that root page you linked on the left. Note the instructions in orange at the top.
I didn't go much further then this, but let us know if this worked in full, and as you expected it to. Nice feature there! I learned something myself today.
I have had mixed success with HTTrack You can give it a site a page and it will go through all links and resources recursively, saving them locally.
It requires some tuning and playing around with to get right, There might even be a newer better equivalent these days.

My first thought was downloading the dumps, but how can I know which dump contains the image I am searching? I have little experience handling dumps/coding. I'm really interested in learning how to automatize the process.

The dumps include text only and the media tarballs are not sorted by categories.
Just use catdown, it even ships wget for you if you're unlucky and you're using that user-unfriendly system called Windows. You could try its replacement (not currently working for me).
You can now use Imker, a Java cross-platform tool.
I have come accross vi-style keybindings for Emacs, but my past experience in mixing Lisp based config in .emacs file for enabling various modes etc., hasn't been very pleasant so far.
Read several articles on Emacs + Erlang, but is there something that might be slightly easier for folks familiar mostly with vi (and who are unfamiliar with Lisp)?
The entire set of possibilities (keybindings) is quite overwhelming. Is there a condensed key-map/shortcuts reference specially relevant for Erlang development?
Just use vi and a command line. There are numerous people doing that and it seems to work just fine for them. Even though I use Emacs, it is not the Emacs-erlang interaction I use. Rather I usually just have a separate Erlang shell and then I load modules in that shell with the l() command for interaction.
Answering your questions one by one:
Debugging in Erlang is funny. Firstly, if your program is kept functional you will find that you need much less debugging to figure out what the program does incorrectly because you can simply write small tests for each of the numerous functions to test its correctness. And you can add those into unit-test frameworks.
As soon as you add multiple processes to the mix you will find that traditional debugging doesn't work anymore anyway. The trick is then to trace and assert, and you will need to learn a way to read programs without running them and see where they go with a debugger.
That said, try to execute debugger:start() in an Erlang shell :) There are also the tracing systems and redbug, a 3rd party tool built on top of them (part of the eper suite).
Profiling can be done with one of the 3-4 profilers: cprof, eprof and fprof are all slightly different in scope and in how much impact they have on your program and if they can be run on a production system or not. I tend to use eprof and I have a knob in my program which will spawn an eprof and then attach it at program start.
Try appmon:start() in a shell.
The standard vi-way of browsing large code bases is to create tags-files so you can jump to the definition point of the thing-under-the-cursor. Emacs can do the same. I have a make tags target to create these files so I can easily make jumps around in the source code. When jumping you have a stack of the former jumps so you can return to the point you jumped from later on.
Finally there are tools like xref which can be worked to create call graphs and find odd things in the code. It will require some coding on your part, but it does provide you with the necessary tooling.
Viper mode provides Vi-style keybindings. That's probably the easiest way to start. Enabling a new mode in your .emacs is a pretty fundamental part of using Emacs, so it's a learning hurdle best cleared early!
The Emacs manual contains more detailed information about making individual changes to your keybindings.
You may find Xah's keybinding tutorial helpful, as it provides many examples.

As some of you might know I am the lead developer of Padre, The Perl IDE. In the first year of its development, Padre became an acceptable text editor with some extra features for Perl development.
I'd like to ask the Stack Overflow community for some help in driving the project further to turn it into an exceptional IDE for Perl development. So I'd be glad to read what do you think are the most important features of an IDE that are still missing from Padre?.
Especially I'd be interested in people who currently use Eclipse+EPIC, Komodo, Visual Studio, or any of the text editors for programmers.
The most important feature of an IDE for Perl development (including Padre) is:
an interactive debugger that actually works. E.g. remembering breakpoints, ability to drill down into complicated data structures, and copy (to clipboard) should work on watched variables - including a menu command Copy Special that allows putting it in various formats; say CSV, XML or tab-separated.
The two most invaluable features I find:
line-by-line debugging, watchpoints, breakpoints, and so on, so I can properly debug my code.
code completion so I don't have to go looking up docs (even online).
OK, here's my third answer, although I hate to say it.
The competition is pretty easy to install. Padre isn't. I tried to update to the latest release today and, once again, got failing tests.
I am a heavy Perl EPIC user and my biggest gripe is not being able to jump to a function that is clearly defined in the current context (usually by pressing F3). It is pretty
much hit or miss at this point.
Stability. People turn away quickly if their editor crashes and they lose their work.
I work with Komodo. I also use other editors but I come back to Komodo most of the time. A good IDE shoud have:
A good Debugger. Breakpoints, watch lists, everything you need.
Remote debugging. Threads debugging capability.
Syntax highlighting including weighted fonts as well ( I was pretty disappointed by Oxygen, for example, an XSLT IDE, where I can not use bold fonts to emphasize reserved terms)
Syntax completion.
Project management tools, preferable extendable by plugins.
Good VCS integration. This is something that I absolutely love in Eclipse: You instantly see what files have local changes and which aren't added to the repository yet. And you get to browse the different versions and have a nice diff view just one mouse click away.
A project manager. It's essential for me to be able to define the set of files and folders that comprise a particular codebase. Sessions are useful but not a replacement.
Testing integration.
Perl has great unit testing tools. When I run my test suite and get a failure, I want to see the code for the test that failed.
Having a good way to jump through test results and see the code for the failed test along with the expected and actual results would be a great boon.
The first thing I look for is some kind of overview of the currently active file. I'd like to see methods/functions and, if possible, the used modules and especially any use base statements.
You solved that pretty well in Padre.
Visual-Studio style refactoring for variables and function names and extraction of functions.
Visual studio searches your whole module for all references and allows you to see all changed lines in case you do not want to change one instance (for whatever reason)...
The question seems more debatable than answerable.
Risking myself of being accused copyright abuser, I will post contents that I remember from the book "Interactive programming environments" by David R. Barstow, Howard E. Shrobe, Erik Sandewall.
It will not be exactly the same, as I have read the book many years ago and I've jotted down it in another language.
PRINCIPLES OF A GOOD INTERACTIVE PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT
1: Know the user
+ Know the previous knowledge and practice of the user
2: Minimize the memorization
+ Selection and not characters entering
+ Names and not numbers
+ Predictable behavior: the user should have a previous impression of what the system will do
+ Possible access and changing of the parameters of the system
3: Optimization of operations
+ Fast execution of common operations
+ Inertia of visualization: the screen should change the less possible
+ Memorization of system operation in user's memory
+ The meaning of specific operations should have a simple relationship with the state of the system
+ The system must be prepared to accept more than 10 followed commands per second, so that it can operate on the user's muscular memory
+ The system should be prepared to organize the parameters of a command
4: Engineer for the errors
+ Provide good error messages.
+ Engineer it to remove away the common errors.
+ The system should provide reversible actions.
+ Redundancy: the operations should have more than one way of being done.
+ Integrity of data structures.
The ability to configure and run external (command-line) tools. Plug-ins are great but end-users won't necessarily want to author one just to integrate with an external tool. Allowing users to configure their own tools provides a great deal of extensibility with minimal barriers to entry.
My editor of choice is UltraEdit. It's not an IDE, but through its support for user tools, I've been able to integrate IDE features such as lint, version control, debugging, and more.
This can be possibly achieved via use strict; but could be as well a valuable feature even if not use'd explicitly, namely:

I use emacs. I would like a system that helps me refactor code, especially when I'm working on ugly 1999 code that uses the begin-at-the-beginning-go-to-the-end philosophy combined with duplicate-and-modify.
I looked at Eclipse, but I can't work with a system that requires me to create a project before I can make a one-character correction to a file.
I looked at Padre, but it's slow and crashes.
I looked at Kod which claims to be configured by CSS, but I can't find a man page that will tell me where to put the CSS.
Integration of a read-eval-print loop. As a heavy Emacs user, I very much appreciate Sepia. Very useful for trying things out before I commit them to code.
Ability to create and debug XS code.
The ability to use my own choice of editor (which it may have, as far as I know). That has a chance of winning over the vim/emacs people.
I don't know if Padre can do this, but the ability to split the screen is very important to me. As a VIM user, I constantly split my screen to look at another file while coding.
Line ending policies for files, by directory, and project-wide.
So, for a given project or directory, I'd like to make all line endings be LF only. While in another directory I may wish to have a mix of CRLF and LF files.
I work a lot on stuff that goes back and forth between Unix and Win32 environments.
The typical solution of automatically converting all files back and forth as one moves from platform to platform hasn't worked well for me.
When a file gets created in the wrong format by accident, it can be a real pain.
Right now, I'm particularly interested in reading the data from MP3 files (ID3 tags?), but the more it can do (eg EXIF from images?) the better without compromising the ID3 tag reading abilities.
I'm interested in making a script that goes through my media (right now, my music files) and makes sure the file name and directory path correspond to the file's metadata and then create a log of mismatched files so I can check to see which is accurate and make the proper changes. I'm thinking Ruby or Python (see a related question specifically for Python) would be best for this, but I'm open to using any language really (and would actually probably prefer an application language like C, C++, Java, C# in case this project goes off).
There is a great post on using PowerShell and TagLibSharp on Joel "Jaykul" Bennet's site. You could use TagLibSharp to read the metatdata with any .NET based language, but PowerShell is quite appropriate for what you are trying to do.
use exiftool (it supports ID3 too). written in perl, but can also be used from the command line. it has a compiled windows and mac version.
it is light-years ahead of any other metadata tool, supporting almost all known audio, video and image files, supports writing (not just reading), and knows about all the custom/extended tags used by software (such as photoshop) and hardware (many camera manufacturers).
#Thomas Owens PowerShell is now part of the Common Engineering Criteria (as of Microsoft's 2009 Product Line) and starting with Serve 2008 is included as a feature. It stands as much of a chance to be installed as Python or Ruby. You also mentioned that you were willing to go to C#, which could use TagLibSharp. Or you could use IronPython...
#Thomas Owens TagLibSharp is a nice library to use. I always lean to PowerShell first, one to promote the language, and two because it is spreading fast in the Microsoft domain. I have nothing against using other languages, I just lean towards what I know and like. :) Good luck with your project.
Further to Anon's answer - exiftool is very powerful and supports a huge range of file types, not just images, but video, audio and numerous document formats.
